Greek Going for Gold at Salt Lake Winter Games First some background info. Although bobsledding is a very prestigious sport in Europe, Greece never really developed into a bobsledding powerhouse like Switzerland, Germany, Italy and France did. There are three main competition circuits in the sport: The World Cup, the Europa Cup and the Americas Cup.
Bobsled is one of the oldest Winter Olympic sports, having debuted at the first Winter Games in France. Participants begin with a sled at the top of a downhill track that is both ice-covered and winding. The participants push the sled to gain momentum and then steer down the track toward the finish. It is a timed sport, with teams racing for the best time. The team with the fastest total time wins.
There are two competitions: a 4-man race and a 2-man race. Coming into the Olympics at Salt Lake City, the Greek team was a mere two seconds behind the competition. But in a sport where time is measured in thousandths of a second, the gap between them and the first place team might as well be two hours.
Bobsled has been contested at every Winter Olympics except one. In 1960, Squaw Valley (California) organizers refused to build a track and the sport was removed from the Olympic schedule. Bobsleds can reach speeds of 80-90 mph.

Features Editor LAKE PLACID — The sport of bobsled is as much a part of Lake Placid as the Olympics themselves. Yet, the future of bobsled, and many other Olympic sports hangs in the balance, caught in the cross-hairs of U.S. Olympic Committee head Norm Blake’s plan to cut the budgets of sports that either have a low profile, don’t win Olympic medals — or both. Blake unveiled the substance of the proposal publicly Wednesday in advance of today’s meeting in Boston. If enacted by the 19-member USOC Executive Committee, the smaller national governing bodies that rely on USOC funding for their existence could face extinction. Blake outlined the plan on April 4 in a conference call to many of the 39 executive directors who head the various Olympic sports organizations in the United States. He said about half would be affected.

The birth of the Jamaica bobsled female team started with Lt Antonette Wemyss Gorman and Captain Judith Blackwood being selected to train as drivers in October 1998 at Utah, Salt Lake City, USA. Since their debut the women have grasped the attention of the media and have been featured in the popular "Sport Illustrated" magazine among other local magazines, radio and television interviews. Bobsledding in Jamaica has a history with the JDF where the first ever Jamaican team comprised Captain Dudley Stokes and Captain Devon Harris. The male team went on to become the most popular bobsled team in the world due the novelty of a tropical island participating in a winter sport and the movie "Cool Runnings". History seems destined to repeat itself with the advent of a female team. The Jamaica bobsled federation retained the services of a coach in May 1999 and a nation wide recruiting programme was undertaken. Eighteen women participated and eight of the top ten performers where members of the Jamaica Defence Force. A subsequent training programme was developed and the JDF women where allowed to pursue the road to making another mark on Jamaica's history. They are

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
June 10, 1999 Governor Pataki: Hat Trick For Orda, Lake Placid 2003 World Bobsled Championships Comming To North Country
Governor Pataki today announced that after a 20-year absence the World Bobsled Championship will return to Lake Placid in 2003, thanks in part to the Governor's steadfast commitment to rebuilding the bobsled/luge run at the Olympic facilities. The 14-day event will take place February 3 16, 2003 at the state-of-the-art bobsled and luge track currently under construction at Mt. Van Hoevenberg. The championship will feature a two-man competition February 3-9 and a four-man competition February 10-16. "Lake Placid is regaining its international status as a premier sports facility," Governor Pataki said. "Our smart investments have ensured that Lake Placid is known for more than just its past Olympic glory, but for its vibrant future as well. The return of this championship to New York after 20 years is yet another sign our State is regaining its greatness." Today's announcement completes a "hat trick" for the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), following the efforts to bring the inaugural Winter Goodwill Games (February 17-20, 2000) and the ESPN Great Outdoor Games (July 20-23, 2000) to Lake Placid.

Under a proposal by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, two-woman bobsled, skeleton and cross-country ski sprints would be added to the Winter Games.
