The women skeleton athletes have been training and racing in Lake Placid since 1987. Participation in World Cup competition did not commence until the early 1990’s. The first women’s World Championship will be held in conjunction with the men’s in February, 2000 at Igls, Austria. Currently, the women are not in a position to medal in 2002. There are only six competitive athletes in international competition, however, the USBSF has identified one promising Podium prospect. Additionally, Cathy Turner, Double Gold medallist in Speed Skating, trained for skeleton in 1997 at Lake Placid and advanced rapidly. Cathy has expressed interest in training for 2002 pending a final decision regarding the sport’s inclusion. Therefore, the USBSF will:
    a) continue to recruit potential world class athletes to the program and b) work through the Core Program to develop the identified athlete and new recruits. The USBSF will request Podium grants for women’s skeleton when those projects will likely produce an Olympic medallist.

    Trivia

Venue: "Spiral," the first artificial ice track in Asia, is in the foothills of Mount Iizuna in the Asakawa district in the northern part of Nagano City. The 1,700-meter track has an elevation of 113 meters and encompasses 15 curves. 1994 Golds: Two-man, Switzerland (Gustav Weder and Donat Acklin in 3:30:81); four-man, Germany (Harald Czudaj, Karestan Brannasch, Olaf Hampel, Alexander Szelig; 3:27:78). Critical Moment: Finding the perfect racing line is the key to bobsledding: The driver struggles with a violently shaking bobsled to keep it on the path that gives the fastest time down the run. In turns, the driver must keep the sled high enough to maintain speed but low enough to avoid going extra distance. KRT How It Works: Nuts and Bolts: Speeds can reach 90 miles per hour, and runs take less than a minute. When braking, the crew feels five times the force of gravity. History: Although sleds have been around for centuries, bobsled racing didn't begin until 1877 in Davos, Switzerland, where a steering mechanism was attached to a toboggan.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bobsled Rides Is the ride on the "real" Olympic track? Yes, this ride is as real as it gets! You start at the actual bobsled start used during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and ride the full length of the track from start to finish. The track measures just under a mile and drops an equivalent of a 40-story building in less than a minute. Summer sleds have wheels and ride on the concrete track. Is there an age/weight limit?

Who Oversees Bobsled in the World?

30-Second Guide Bobsled is one of the oldest Winter Olympic sports, having debuted at the first Winter Games in France. Participants begin with a motionless sled at the top of a downhill track that is both ice-covered and winding. The participants push the sled to gain momentum and then steer down the track toward the finish. It is a timed sport, with teams racing for the best time. The team with the fastest total time wins. Did You Know?
    • The bobsled currently used by the U.S. Bobsled Team was designed by NASCAR driver Geoff Bodine, and is called the Bo-Dyn Bobsled. Each athlete on a four-man bobsled is typically responsible for preparing one of the four metal runners for race day, a process which can take three hours of sanding alone. To remove the largest scratches from the runner, an athlete may start sanding using paper with a grit of 50. He/she moves to 100 grit paper to sand out all of the 50 grit marks and keeps progressing until he/she is working with 3000 grit, and finally, a fine polish. Bobsled has been contested at every Winter Olympics except one. In 1960, Squaw Valley (Calif.) organizers refused to build a track and the sport was removed from the Olympic schedule.

    Sliding Sport of Skeleton
Approaching speeds of 80 mph, a skeleton slider descends down the icy bobsled track head first, face down, and hands back. Today, the sport of skeleton features men and women competing each year in local, national, and international competitions. Skeleton, the world's first sliding sport, returned to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games after a 54-year hiatus. Gaining momentum and popularity, the USA team accomplished an astonishing feat: winning gold in both the men's and women's divisions. Aerodynamic Equipment Team USA Skeleton uses state-of-the-art fiberglass or steel sleds measuring 3' long and 16'' wide and weighing 70-115 lbs, depending on the slider's body weight. The protective racing helmets are equipped with a chin guard to protect the face, which is a mere two inches off the ice. The athletes wear aerodynamically designed tight rubber suits, allowing them to reach speeds of 70 to 80 mph, and sprinter's spikes to achieve the quick 50 meter start. Skeleton is a sport of extreme precision, concentration, and fearlessness.

Executive Summary Vision/Mission Our San Diego Bobsled team is one of a kind and committed first and foremost to marketing our sponsors’ products and name by being the most impressive team on tour. We believe our first responsibility is to our sponsors and to the marketing of their products, while remaining committed to our original reason for developing the team: to win an Olympic medal! We plan to start in the European Cup, then advance to the World Cup, on our way to qualifying for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Our vision is very clear. To ensure our team has a competitive edge. We will recruit the best athletes possible from the San Diego area, and build our own U.S Bobsled. This will ensure the safety and competitive edge that is essential in reaching our goal.
Background Our San Diego Bobsled team was developed because of the lack of opportunities for new athletes. There are no opportunities for athletes without a long-established record to receive funding or logistic support from the United States Olympic Committee, or the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation. Because of this, a San Diego Bobsled team is being created with deep commitment and determination to qualify for the 2002 Winter Olympic games. We have a management team that has experience in all key areas needed to make this team successful. We are driven as a team to “do things right” in management, image, safety, and speed.

    We need new Olympic sports
By Jeremy Nelson, Varsity Staff Published: Thursday, February 14, 2002 Call them what you want, but the events of the winter Olympics are not all sports.
And so, if we have don't have to worry about their "purity," let's mess with them a little and make a far, far more interesting Olympics.
    • Dual Bobsled. There's nothing quite as boring as seeing one team after another glide down the same course in a minute with performances that are imperceptable from one another save for a few split seconds. It's like watching a 100-metre sprint, except having each runner go individually. The simple solution: widen the track and allow (or should I say force) both teams to run down the same track at the same time. Think of the passes on the hairpin turns, the crashing of sleds together, the chaos and life-endangering injuries.
    • Picnic Skiing. Now does anyone, I repeat, anyone at all watch cross-country skiing? Yes, it requires a great deal of athleticism, but the award for stamina must surely go not to the athletes but to any spectator who manages not to nod off during a 15 km trek.
The solution? Borrow an idea from company picnics and start three-legged cross-country races. The catch would be that you couldn't choose a partner until the start of the race, resulting in some delightful multi-lingual mishaps, and a chance for that finish guy to finally get a little closer to the Norwegian blonde he's been eyeing lo these many years.

    Bobsleigh
Do you want to learn about one of the BEST sports in the winter Olympics? … If your answer was yes then you have to read this. Imagine yourself bobsledding. You're at the starting line waiting for the buzzer to go off. The crowd is screaming in your ear. Bobsledding is a winter sport. Bobsleighing started in Switzerland in the late 1800s. It is one of the original Winter Olympic sports. A four-man event was included in the very first Winter Olympics in 1924. In 1932, a two-man event was added. Women will be competing in the bobsleigh event for the first time in Olympic history. The women's event will be a two-woman event. Bobsleighs have runners, a main hull, a frame, and a front and rear axle. The hull is made of fiberglass and the runners are made of steel. It can go 90 miles per hour. The events consist of two runs both done on the same day. The winner is the sled team with the lowest time. To be a bobsleigher you need a helmet, a bobsled, suit, and a number on the car. The start for sleds is very important. The three men in the back push the sled to get it started, after the sled is on its way they jump in. They only have 60 seconds to get started. Steering is also important. The driver of the sled steers by gently pulling on two pieces of string that are connected to a steering bolt that steers the sled. In the sled you will need a brake to stop you when get to the finish line. Each team is from a different country like Jamaica or Canada. There was a movie made about the Jamaican bobsled team a few years ago. They were very famous for a while. Prince Albert of Monaco will be competing in the 2002 Winter Olympics. But when he is in the sled, on the course he will be known as just Albert Grimaldi, driver of Monaco.
