History
The bobsled was developed in Switzerland late in the 19th century when someone put runners on a toboggan to get greater speed down the famous Cresta Run at St. Moritz. The sport of racing bobsleds down the mountain quickly became popular among British and American visitors. The new sled got its name because early racers thought they could get even more speed by bobbing their bodies backward and forward. They soon realized it didn't work, but the name stuck. The first organized competition in the new sport was held on the Cresta Run on January 5, 1898, with five-passenger sleds. (Two of the passengers had to be women.) For better steering, they were equipped with four runners, positioned on axles much like the four wheels of a car. With the new design, speeds on the mountainside became dangerously fast, so an artificial bobsled run with a gentler slope was built at St. Moritz in 1902. Bobsledding spread rapidly to other Alpine countries. By 1914, when the first European championships took place at St. Moritz, there were more than a hundred bobsled runs in Europe.

The History Of Bobsledding The sled, created centuries ago, has mainly been a mode of transportation. The actual sport of racing with bobsleds wasn't initiated until the late 19th century, when a steering mechanism was added to the inside of the tobbogan.
Bobsledding started in Albany, N.Y. in 1897 and then the idea quickly streamed through Switzerland, which started the growth of the sport in winter resorts throughout Europe. By the year of 1914, races were happening on different natural ice courses.
The first sleds were completely constructed with wood, until they were replaced with steel sleds that gained the title "the bobsled." This title had to do with the way crews bobbed back and forth to make the sled go faster on straightaways.
In 1923, the Federation Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing (FIBT) was created and the next year a quartet participated in the first Winter Olympics in Chamoix, France. Then, at the 1932 Olympics, a two-man even was added in Laked Placid, N.Y.
Racing bobsled began as a past time for the wealthy and outgoing who would gather at the alpine resorts for weekends in which there would be racing and partying.

Skeleton History
The women skeleton athletes have been training and racing in Lake Placid since 1987. Participation in World Cup competition did not commence until the early 1990’s. The first women’s World Championship will be held in conjunction with the men’s in February, 2000 at Igls, Austria. Currently, the women are not in a position to medal in 2002. There are only six competitive athletes in international competition, however, the USBSF has identified one promising Podium prospect. Additionally, Cathy Turner, Double Gold medallist in Speed Skating, trained for skeleton in 1997 at Lake Placid and advanced rapidly. Cathy has expressed interest in training for 2002 pending a final decision regarding the sport’s inclusion. Therefore, the USBSF will:
a) continue to recruit potential world class athletes to the program and b) work through the Core Program to develop the identified athlete and new recruits. The USBSF will request Podium grants for women’s skeleton when those projects will likely produce an Olympic medallist.

The small village of Lake Placid is world-famous as the host of the Winter Olympic Games in 1932 and 1980, but its place in the sporting world goes beyond that. Lake Placid attracts world-class athletes for the current world championship events. As well, Olympic athletes currently use Lake Placid as a training facility for many Olympic sports.
Lake Placid is also the home of U.S. sports governing bodies such as the U.S. Luge Association, U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation, as well as the U.S. Canoe and Kayak teams.
