Only 50 feet separate you and the electric eye that starts the timer. You must break the beam within 60 seconds or all is lost, and four years of training will be for naught. To complicate matters, you’re standing on ice, and you have to break the beam with a two-man bobsled weighing about 400 pounds. Fortunately, you’re not alone. Adrenaline surges as you and your teammate rock the sled back and forth. The clock ticks toward zero. As you sprint for the line, needle-sharp spikes on the bottoms of your shoes dig into the ice. Close on your heels, your colleague urges you on. Once the beam is broken you have 164 feet to build up momentum before jumping into the cramped cockpit of the sled. After a short sprint, you dive in and grab the steering ropes. Your colleague follows quickly and tucks in behind, almost invisible to those looking on.

Women already up to Olympic speed
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Originally published Tuesday, January 29, 2002 Arbitrators. Grievances. A messy breakup. Shattered dreams. Enough story lines to fill a TV soap opera. No, Tonya Harding is not making a comeback. Rather, the U.S. women's bobsled team is in the middle of a messy spat just weeks before making its long-awaited debut at the Salt Lake City Games. Not since Nancy Kerrigan's knee got whacked eight years ago has there been this much pre-Olympic buzz about a women's competition. This time, though, it's without the thugs and telescoping baton. Shortly after the Olympic flame arrived in the U.S. and 10 days before the Olympic bobsled trails, American driver Jean Racine sent a chill through the bobsledding community by dumping her longtime teammate and best friend, Jen Davidson.

Electric Slide: U.S. Bobsledders Make History
The team nobody talked about before the first women's bobsled competition in Olympic history was the team everyone asked about afterward: the U.S. second team of driver Jill Bakken and Vonetta Flowers, who won the gold medal with a total two-run time of 1:37.76. Vonetta became the first African-American ever to win gold at a Winter Olympics. "Hopefully, this will encourage other African-American boys and girls to give winter sports a try," Vonetta said. The win was the first American bobsled medal in 46 years . . . all it took was to let women compete in the sport! "A lot of people saw us as the ‘other team,' " Vonetta said. "We wanted to prove them wrong." Vonetta was referring to the U.S. first team of driver Jean Racine and brakewoman Gea Johnson. Before the Olympics, Jean received more press than an ultra-wrinkled shirt. Jean and her former brakewoman, Jen Davidson, had reeled off 23 straight "W's" and won the World Cup titles in the 1999-2000 and 2000-01 seasons. But after a poor start in 2001-2002, Jean blamed Jen for their lousy performances and dumped her like an old video-game system. She added Gea, a powerful pusher, just months before the Olympics. But Gea pulled her left hamstring days before the race and was visibly limping at both of their starts.

John Gichigi/Allsport HISTORY Sleds have been used for centuries as a way to travel on snow, but bobsledding didn't emerge as a sport until the late 19th century, when the Swiss attached a steering mechanism to a toboggan. Bobsled races take place on many natural ice courses throughout Europe. The Federation Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing (FIBT) is founded. The four-man race takes place at the first ever Winter Olympic Games in Chamonix, France. At the Games in St. Mortiz, Switzerland, five men compete on each four-man team for the only time in Olympic history. The two-man event is added at the 1932 Olympics in Lake Placid, NY. American Eddie Eagen becomes the only person to win a gold medal in both the Winter and Summer Olympics (four-man bobsled, light heavyweight boxing). An important rule change limits the total weight of crew and sled, ending the era of the heavyweight bobsledder. The rule helps make the sport a highly athletic event. Early 1990s: Women's bobsledding debuts at events in Europe and North America.
