PARK CITY, Utah (AP) The last U.S. men's bobsled medal came when Ike was in the White House, Elvis was just slipping on his blue suede shoes, and Don Larsen was perfect. Oh, and women's Olympic bobsled was 46 years away. Todd Hays has a chance to end nearly a half-century of frustration in about 90 seconds on Saturday. And he's already halfway there. Hays drove the USA-1 bobsled into first place Friday after the first two heats of the four-man event. With a couple more strong runs Saturday he can end the men's medal drought that dates to 1956.

12-10-03 – NBC to Air "Ice 2003" This Weekend NEW YORK, N.Y. – Just in time for the winter weather, NBC Sports will broadcast this weekend a winter sports festival entitled "Verizon Ice 2003," showcasing the sports of Luge, Curling, Bobsled and Skeleton. The event can be seen this Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 13-14), from 4:30-6:00PM ET each day. During the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, in Salt Lake City, UT, these sports combined to win eight medals, including three gold in five different disciplines – luge, men's and women's bobsled, and men's and women's skeleton. "The Salt Lake Olympics were a tremendous success for NBC," said Jon Miller, Senior Vice President of Programming for NBC Sports. "These are some of the sports that delivered the medals and the ratings for us, and we're excited about the opportunity to bring them together again for our viewers." Packaged and produced by Carr-Hughes Productions, of Saratoga Springs, NY, "Ice 2003" will be a fully integrated program, with coverage coming from a variety of locations including luge from Altenberg, Germany, and curling from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. Bobsled and Skeleton will originate from Lake Placid, NY, which will also be the host site location. "We believe our concept of intermixing the four sports throughout each show will make for a more entertaining program for our viewers," offered Bob Hughes, executive producer for Carr-Hughes Productions.

With the first Olympic Winter Games an enormous success, it was no surprise that the St. Moritz Games attracted an 84 percent increase in the number of participants including a 100% increase of female athletes. The Games started poorly due to extremely mild temperatures caused by the "fohn", the warm wind that sweeps the Swiss mountains from the south. The 1928 Winter Games in St. Moritz marked the first time Germany was allowed to participate in any Olympic competition after World War I; the Soviet Union was still notably absent. The Germans won a disappointing one bronze medal. Bobsledding was in the news at the 1928 Games. A new event, the skeleton sled, was upgraded from a demonstration sport and added to the program. In addition, teams in the four-man bobsled event had an option to include a fifth member. They all took up that option.

Lake Placid was a ski station among the Adirondacks in the State of New York. The traditional dominion of the Norwegian cross-country skiers was decidedly shaken in the third edition of the Winter Games which went outside of Europe for the first time. The Games at Lake Placid included the debut of the two-man bobsled event, and three demonstration sports: women's speedskating, dog-sled racing and curling (for the second time). Snow had to be trucked in so that the ski jump competition staging area could be covered. Right from the start, the Lake Placid Games were looking to make history. During the opening ceremony, the British contingent's flag was carried by a woman, an Olympic first. The Americans won the four-man bobsled, and team member Eddie Eagan became the first and only man to win both a Summer and Winter Olympic medal Eagan won the 1920 light heavyweight boxing gold medal.

30-Second History of Bobsled and Skeleton
    • Bobsledding is one of the oldest Winter Olympic sports and debuted at the first Winter Olympics ever. Although its earlier wooden ancestors probably originated in the United States, England and Switzerland can claim the invention of the modern sport of bobsledding. The four-man race was the first Olympic bobsled event in 1924. The two-man race was added to the Olympic schedule in 1932. Women's two-man bobsledding will debut at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. The early details of the history of skeleton sliding and bobsledding is widely disputed. One such account credits the first metal skeleton sled to an American tourist, Stephen Whitney, in 1888. Women's skeleton will debut at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, along with the debut of women's bobsled.

Flowers 1st Black to win Winter Olympics gold
Published February 21, 2002 The color combination is deep, striking, tough enough for the Pittsburgh Steelers, pretty enough for a sunflower. But, for 78 years, absent from the Winter Olympics. Until this week, when a bundled-up track star from the Deep South painted the town with it. Black and gold. Forever in the person of Vonetta Flowers, the first African American gold medalist in Winter Olympic history. Black and gold. How beautiful it looked. How sadly strange it looked. For those who dominate these winter sports, it seems that gold medals sometimes come from birth or geography. For the first black winner, it took the miracle of a bobsledder from Birmingham, Ala. "My husband always told me, 'God put you in this sport for a reason,'" Flowers said Wednesday morning, shaking her head. "But I never expected to be here."

    History
Sleds that look similar to the modern day bobsled have been raced for more than 200 years. Some historians say the sport started in Switzerland in the late 1800s - but there is also evidence of people racing similar sleds in New York State a few years before that. Bobsledding has been an Olympic event since 1924. The Events
There are three events in Olympic Bobsledding: two-man, four-man and two-woman. Each team has a driver who is responsible for steering the bobsled and a brakeman who pulls the brake to stop the sled at the end of the race. On the four-man team, there are two pushers who push the sled at the beginning of the race then jump in for the ride. This is the first Winter Olympics where women have competed in the bobsledding race. Who To Watch
  • Todd Hays, USA

  • Todd will be driving in both the two-man and four-man and could win medals in both events. He's competing in his first Olympics and is one of the best all around athletes in the world. Todd used to play football for the University of Tulsa and was the USA Kickboxing Champion in 1993.

    1980 Winter Olympics
The 1980 Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid was a miracle in its own way. It was the second Winter Olympics held in the area (the first in 1932). Costing 88 million dollars, many old facilities from 1932 had to be rebuilt and many new facilities had to be built. It was the thirteenth Winter Olympics, lasting about ten days, with 37 countries represented and 1067 athletes. For the first time the communist People's Republic of China joined a modern Olympics. It was a time when most Americans felt unsafe with the threat of the Cold War. The strength of a speedskater and the victory of a hockey team were the remedies to make the US feel like a nation again... Perhaps the most memorable part of the 1980 Winter Olympics is the US hockey victory over the "unbeatable" Soviet Union. Not a lot was expected of the US hockey team made up of college students and minor leagurers. Everyone watching was stunned by the US win of 4 to 3, and eventually the defeat of Finland for the gold. Goalie Jim Craig stopped an amazing 39 shots from the Soviet Union, and made the US feel good about itself again. Ten thousand fans watched on, waving American flags and chanting: " USA, USA," the last few seconds. With the final buzzer and a do-nothing team that had just beaten the impossible, the crowd erupted. The US had beaten the Russians, and they had never given up. As one announcer put it, " Do you believe in miracles?" The US hockey team allowed us to believe in miracles because we could defeat the "unbeatable," and Lake Placid was apart of this great moment.
