Chapter 3: Anarchistic Precedents in Africa
Continental Africa covers about 11,500,000 square miles, running from the Mediterranean Sea to the Cape of Good Hope, and from the Western Bulge (Senegal) to the Eastern Horn (Somalia), together with the offshore islands of Cape Verde, Fernando Po, Madagascar, Mauritius, Zanzibar, the Comoros, and others. The territory that lies between the Sahara Desert and the tropical rain forest is the home of a variety of peoples. Between Senegal and Gambia live the Wolor and Tukulor, while between Gambia and the River Niger Valley live the Soninke, Mandigo, Khran, Tuareg, Ashanti, Banbara, and Djula. The Songhai dominate the middle Niger area, and the Masai inhabit the Upper Volta basin. Across the river in what is presently northwestern and north-central Nigeria live the Hausa-Fulani, while the Kanuri live in the northeast. Further south and spreading toward the east one finds the Igbo, Yoruba, Gikuyu, Luo, Shona, Ndebele, Xhosa, Bantu, Zulu, etc. To the north of the Sahara lies Egypt and the Maghredb region, which are peopled by African Arabs and Berbers.

History runs deep in Mali. In the 13th century, long before French colonizers arrived, the peaceful and productive Malian Empire spread through much of today's West Africa, far beyond the country's present borders. Many different ethnic groups came together under a visionary Manding king, Sunjata Keita, to control the trans-Saharan trade of salt and gold. The empire enjoyed two centuries of peace and glory, and that golden era lives on today in songs and stories. Contemporary Mali is far poorer and more challenged than the Empire at its height, or indeed than the Songhai and Bambara kingdoms that followed Mali and preceded the French colonial era. The Manding now rub shoulders and share scant resources with Fulani (Peul), Bambara, Bobo, Dogon, Tamascheck, Soninke, Songhoi, Tuareg and other peoples. But recalling the inclusive vision of Sunjata, Malians mostly get along and show a respect for cultural diversity unusual in modern Africa. Each of these ethnic groups has its own rich musical tradition, and together, they form one of the most enchanting musical landscapes in the world. If Malians are more acutely in touch with their history than many other Africans, much credit goes to the

since it is I who must weep for you!
For are those not the tears of the Maker
that flow down your shiny cheeks
and course through those arteries new and raw?
Oh Africa
Oh Africa, my soul mourns
the days of our youth, now so long past,
when you would succour me and I
would nurture you and cherish your gifts so generously given... Oh Africa Oh Africa, alas no more - for, like a plague, the ravaging seething mass moves across your face breeding, breeding, breeding, breeding swarming, all consuming, devouring... Oh Africa Oh Africa, what will become of our beloved friends elephant, cheetah, rhino lion and little duiker? Who will care for them now? And in your sickness you struggle on... and now the mass consumes your lungs it stifles your breath Oh Africa I weep...
Be as proud of your race no matter what was the case ! today, as our ancestors were, in the days of yore. We have a beautiful history full of mistiry We shall create another and dedicate it to the African mother. in the future, that will astonish the world Kiswahili AFRICA Africa was and still the most colorful continent on earth even before the colonization. The diversity in Africa is seen every where, climat, nature, languages, colors and cultural diversity. This diversity makes it difficult to generlize ideas and stereotypes about Africa and Africans.

AQUAtox© 2000: The International School Network on Water Toxicity
John Eberlee
About Reports Email notification [Photo: AQUAtox participants in Ecuador.] In the Andean city of Ibarra, Ecuador, students from local schools uncovered evidence of bacterial contamination in the piped water system serving one of the 'barrios' (neighbourhoods). During a community meeting, the residents were surprised by these results, but even more surprised to learn from municipal water authorities that they were receiving untreated water, due to rapid urban growth and limited funding. To avoid future public health problems, the water authorities took this opportunity to inform community members about the need for household and environmental hygiene measures to protect their health. In the State of Morelos, Mexico, teachers and students worked closely with the Mexican Institute of Water Technology to monitor the water quality of the Cuautla and Ayala rivers, which are used by local farmers for irrigation. The project generated information useful for the community, scientists, and students. Together, these groups are now lobbying nearby factories to improve their environmental practices, and are lobbying state authorities to enforce existing pollution regulations.
