Until 1999, the federal government did a very poor job at maintaining web sites about safety and regulations for recreational boaters. Wisconsin Boating Regulations
Please note that this is not a complete set of boating laws. This is the information published in the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Boating Regulations pamphlet. You may obtain further information by E-Mail or by contacting your local conservation warden or law enforcement authorities. Wisconsin boaters enjoy one of the finest recreational boating safety programs in the nation. To aid those in distress on our waters and to assure that the requirements of law are obeyed Wisconsin Conservation Wardens, many county sheriff's departments, municipal police departments and the U.S. Coast Guard have established marine enforcement patrols. Whenever your boat is approached by an authorized patrol boat displaying blue lights you shall reduce the boat speed to slow-no-wake speed and yield the right-of-way to the patrol boat. The operator of a boat shall stop when requested to by a law enforcement officer or patrol boat. These officers are charged with the responsibility of providing safety afloat. Law violators can expect enforcement action and conscientious boaters will find these officers helpful protectors of their recreation. The Law Enforcement Mission

Boating Safety Education
Upcoming Classes The number of recreational boaters using Wisconsin's waterways has grown tremendously over the past decade. As our waterways become more crowded and the types of boats using the water become more varied, it is increasingly important for boaters to become educated on safe boating techniques and laws. Boating safety course graduates can help ensure healthy, happy, and safe voyages for years to come.
Course Objective
To reduce the potential for boat accidents, injuries and fatalities; to reduce the potential for conflict between different types of boating activities and other resource users; and to promote safe, responsible, and ethical use of the environment and our resources.

Boating Safety Education Requirements Maryland's Boating Safety Education Law is designed to assure that the younger generation of boaters have fundamental knowledge of boating rules and safety and that eventually, all boaters will be operating their boats with a basic level of boating education. The law also imposes the requirement for persons convicted of certain boating violations to successfully complete a boating safety education courseregardless of the age of the operator. The Boating Safety Education Law requires that any person born on or after July 1, 1972 must have in their possession a certificate of boating safety education while operating a numbered or documented vessel on Maryland waters. The certificate may be obtained by completing an approved boating safety course or passing an equivalency examination. The Natural Resources Police offer the Maryland Basic Boating Course through local recreation departments and community colleges. This course is 8-10 hours in length and covers the basics of boating and water safety. The equivalency examination is for those persons who desire not to take a course and is offered, by appointment at locations throughout the State. For study materials for the equivalency examination or course information, contact: Maryland Natural Resources Police

Actions on 2003 Proposals
Proposed Regulations for 2004
The following areas are under consideration for regulatory action in 2004. During the summer of 2004, these areas will be studied and evaluated. For detailed information on each proposal and to provide input to the Department of Natural Resources concerning a proposed regulation, click on the links below for details.
  • Ramsey Lake
The Department of Natural Resources has received a petition to establish an all time 6-knot speed limit for all portions of Ramsey Lake. They state that Ramsey Lake has experienced a dramatic increase in boat traffic in recent years.
  • Selby Bay
The Department of Natural Resources has received a petition to establish an all time 6-knot speed limit for all portions of Selby Bay. Additionally, they request the 6 knot zone to extend out to a point that is in line with the end of Turkey Point Island to the tip of Long Point.
  • Pocomoke River - Shad Landing
The Department of Natural Resources proposes to create a 6 knot speed limit in the immediate vicinity of the Shad Landing boat ramp and docks. The Department also proposes to create a minimun wake zone at all times in Corkers Creek.
  • Pocomoke River
The Department of Natural Resources has received a petition to extend the existing speed limit which begins at the Rt 13 bridge and extends through Pocomoke City. The new extension would extend the speed limit approximately 400 yds in a northeasterly direction from the Rt 13 bridge.

Limits on the number of vessels allowed to enter Glacier Bay are intended to enhance the quality of each visitor's experience by protecting air quality and water quality, providing opportunities for wilderness solitude, and promoting the well-being of marine wildlife including fish, seabirds and marine mammals.
Noise restrictions provide quiet anchorages for boaters.

Glacier National Park offers a variety of boating experiences. Boat launching ramps are available on Bowman and McDonald Lakes on the west side, and St. Mary and Two Medicine Lakes on the east side of the park. Boat rentals are available at Apgar, Lake McDonald Lodge, Rising Sun, Many Glacier, and Two Medicine. Contact Glacier Park Boat Company for information and rates. Canoes or rafts can be carried to many smaller waters. White water canoeing, kayaking, or rafting can be enjoyed on the Flathead River which forms the south and west boundary of Glacier. The rivers and lakes in this mountainous region are very cold. All water users (boaters, swimmers, and skiers) should be aware of the dangers of hypothermia at any time of the year.
Registration All motorboats and sailboats 12 feet in length and longer must be registered and numbered according to State of Montana regulations. Hand propelled boats are exempt, and boats from other states or countries may be used temporarily without Montana registration.
