Risk alert on boating and water sports
The under-reporting of injuries from boating and water sport accidents is disguising the extent of the problem in Victoria, a new report from the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) has found. The latest edition of Hazard, published by the Victorian Injury Surveillance and Applied Research System (a project of MUARC), provides an overview of deaths and injuries associated with Victoria's popular water-based recreational activities. The report is the first comprehensive look at data from a number of sources, including the Marine Incident Database, the National Coroners' Information System and the Victorian hospital-based injury surveillance databases. Hazard reveals there were 18 deaths, 205 hospital admissions and at least 517 emergency department presentations for injuries between July 2000 and July 2002. Activities covered include recreational boating, water skiing, personal watercraft riding, rowing, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, rafting and kitesurfing, as well as scuba driving and snorkelling. But senior research fellow at MUARC Ms Erin Cassell says many injuries are being missed because several large hospitals in popular water sport areas including Sandringham, Wodonga, Swan Hill and Hamilton have just come on the emergency department database.

There are a great variety of campgrounds for your outdoor enjoyment. All campsites are on a first come, first served basis with few exceptions. Big Meadows has 15 sites that are reservable by calling the National Reservation Service toll-free at (877) 444-6777. Reservations for campsites in the Calaveras Big Trees State Park in the summer months are on the Destinet system 1-800-444-PARK. For specific campground information on U.S.F.S. campgrounds, be sure to contact the Calaveras Ranger Office in Hathaway Pines at 209-795-1381 or check their web site at http://www.r5.fs.fed.us/stanislaus/calaveras Large campers and trailers are permitted in campgrounds where space allows. No more than two cars per site are permitted in developed campgrounds. Vehicles must be parked on the pavement in paved campgrounds. All campsites will accommodate tents. To ease environmental impacts, no more than six persons or one family may occupy any one campsite. All developed campgrounds have quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Generator use is restricted to posted hours.
Picknicking
Five developed picnic grounds with tables, stoves and toilet facilities are located within the Calaveras Ranger District: Crescent Grove (on Hwy. 4 near Hathaway Pines), Cottage Springs, Spicer Reservoir (near the boat launch), Marmot and Chickaree (both on the shores of Lake Alpine). Calaveras Big Trees State Park also has group and individual picnic sites on the North Grove and individual sites at Beaver Creek and Stanislaus River areas. Picnicking is not limited to only developed sites. There are many locations throughout the forest suited for picnicking.

Welcome to the Isle Royale National Park Boating, Canoeing and Kayaking Guide It is our intent to provide information that will be timely and of assistance in planning a trip, vacation or obtaining data about this park
Boating, Canoeing and Kayaking Guide Boating Guide Canoeing and Kayaking Guide Fishing Isle Royale National Park was authorized by Congress in 1931 "to conserve a prime example of North Woods Wilderness." The park was designated part of the National Wilderness Preservation System in 1976, under the Wilderness Act, and remains today as an example of primitive America. In fact, over 98% of the land in Isle Royale is designated wilderness. Further honors were bestowed in 1981, when Isle Royale was designated an International Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations, giving it global scientific and educational significance. Wilderness is managed for preservation and solitude. We need such natural places for study, measuring the forces of natural change and dynamics, and as a place to renew the human spirit. Isle Royale has established rules and regulations governing group size, fires, sanitation, and basic conduct to help protect its varied resources as well as the quality of experience for users. Help preserve wilderness by following these guidelines. Boating Guide Boaters have been coming to Isle Royale to enjoy the clean clear waters, the protected harbors and bays, the dramatic shorelines, and the excellent fishing for more than 100 years. Many Isle Royale boaters make repeat trips to the island, and some can trace their island connections back for generations. Even first-time visitors can feel keen appreciation for the resources and value of this one of a kind maritime park.

ON THE WATER The Berkshires have an abundance of rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds available for recreational use. If you love being in or on the water, you'll love the Berkshires! Fishing is one of the more popular summer activities in the Berkshires, and for good reason. The various bodies of water in the county are home to many species of sportfish. From the sunfish and perch, always favorites among the younger anglers, to trout, crappie, bass (large and smallmouth), pike and even tiger muskies, you can probably find your favorite quarry in Berkshire County. In fact, two current state records, chain pickerel and tiger muskie, were caught in waters less than a half-hour from Jiminy! For more information on fishing please check out Mass Wildlife. For resident and non-resident licensing information please go to Mass Wildlife License Information. Pontoosuc Lake and Onota Lake in Pittsfield are also great for boating or canoeing. Hoosac Lake in Cheshire, also known as Cheshire Reservoir, is another great choice for canoeing or kayaking, as are several of the Berkshires' rivers. The best part of all is that even if you don't own a watercraft or have never tried boating or canoeing, you're in luck. There are places within an easy drive that can get you what you need to get started off on the right foot. Berkshire Canoe Tours
Surround yourself with the beauty of the Berkshires. Day and evening tours are available, including moonlight tours. All you need to bring is your sense of adventure, all other equipment is supplied for you. Group rates are available for groups of 10-20 people. Call (413) 442-2789 for more information.
