Paddling and Boating in Florida:
Florida Guide to Nature Travel, Ecotourism and Outdoors Adventures
Whether you choose a canoe or a kayak, paddling your way through Florida's natural areas is one way to explore our water-rich state and in some places, it's virtually the only way. Most of Florida is a peninsula, surrounded by sea water. With the Gulf of Mexico on the western side of the state, the Atlantic Ocean on the eastern and the Caribbean Sea not far off the southern end, Florida has a lot of shoreline to explore even natural shoreline thick with mangroves that canoes and kayaks seem perfectly made for. But inland, there are a lot of rivers and streams, too, where you can paddle through forests and past meadows. Northern Florida is home to hundreds of springs that invite paddlers to float down their runs. Central Florida is dotted with a myriad of lakes of all sizes. And in southern Florida, the Everglades and the Ten Thousand Islands are where paddling a canoe or kayak is the best mode of transportation if you really want to see the true River of Grass. There are so many places to take a canoe or kayak that we can't list all of them here; there is so much water in Florida that almost any of the places described on our

The Fastest Growing Water Sports are Available in the Pocono Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania
Kayaking, Rafting, Canoeing, Jet Skiing, and Motor Boating, Rate Among the Trendiest Outdoor Activities According to a Recent Study POCONO MOUNTAINS, Pa. – Visitors who want to participate in the hottest, trendiest outdoor sports this spring and summer should look no further than the nearby Pocono Mountains. According to a recent study sighting recreational trends*, kayaking, rafting, canoeing, jet skiing, and motor boating are among the fastest growing recreational activities and the Pocono Mountains has it all. Kayaking has grown 272.10% since 1994* and outfitters along the Delaware River are ready for another busy season. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River combined boast over 110 miles of beautiful river to paddle and enjoy its sweet serenity. Canoeing and kayaking are both very popular Pocono Mountains summertime activities, but the ever-growing interest in kayaking has spawned a new wave of river riders. “Kayaking is a group sport with an individual flavor,” said Eric Orr of Landers River Trips. “A group of friends can take a river trip together but each person has the freedom to do their own exploration since they’re not sharing a canoe or raft with other people.” However, tandem canoes for two people are offered from all of the Delaware River outfitters for those who want to paddle with a partner.

Getting Your Canoe/Kayak There For most of us, getting our canoe/kayak to the water involves cartopping. Improper car topping can cause accidents and lost canoes/kayaks. Start with a solid, well made roof rack and lash the canoe down to both cross bars. Tie both ends of the canoe to the bumpers. Rope is much better than rubber stretch ties. The best way is to secure the midpoint of a rope about 15 feet long to each end of the thwarts on the canoe, and lash the rope ends to the bumpers as far apart as possible in a Vee arrangement to keep the canoe secure in a crosswind. A specialized kayak carrier is the safest investment you can make. Your kayak will cradle with specialized straps for a positive securing system. Tie down the bow and stern lines to the car bumper. This will give the kayak more lateral stability and will help secure the kayak and the racks to the car. Onto the Water and OffNot IntoBe Safe A frequent source of canoe/kayak damage (and wet paddlers) is the simple act of putting a canoe/kayak into the water and getting into it or getting ashore. Do not push a canoe/kayak across rough rocky shores. Carry them to the water. To carry a canoe the best method is one person on each side at the center of the canoe. At the water’s edge, lower one end onto the water and slide the canoe out and afloat, the bottom unscratched.
