Boa Constrictor
The boa constrictor is one of the largest snakes in the world. When the snake is in captivity, it gets to be 5 to 7 feet long. In the wild boa constrictors are 10 to 13 feet long. It weighs about 130 pounds when fully grown. The boa is brown and tan to provide good camouflage when crawling on the forest floor.
The boa constrictor is found from Mexico all the way down to Argentina, which is the Amazon Rain Forest.
It eats mice, birds, small iguanas, and other small animals. The boa can live for many months without eating anything. Sometimes after it eats, it can sleep up to a week.
The boa hunts mostly at night. While hunting, it holds still and waits for the animal to get in range, corks back very slowly, and strikes. Then the boa squeezes its food to death. When it eats, the boa disconnects its jaw and slowly swallows.
The boa can have up to 50 live young at one time.
Even though I did a report on the boa, I still wouldn't want to have one in my house! This page created by:Trent

In the wild, Argentine Boa Constrictors eat birds and other small animals. In captivity, they are fed rats that are occasionally dusted with a nutrient or mineral powder. Argentine Boa Constrictors are extremely active and will need branches or shelves in their cages when they are kept in captivity. They have fairly docile temperaments but should be handled with caution; they may be aggressive if nervous or frightened. It has been reported that they will hiss when they are startled. Argentine Boa Constrictors need fresh water available at all times and love to soak in their water bowls. The male Argentine Boa Constrictor reaches about 8 feet at maturity, and females are larger, and can grow to 10 or 12 feet! It has a gray belly with dark spots. The rest of the snake has a brownish or black background color, with a pattern of darker and lighter colors, sometimes white. The head, from the neck to the very tip of the snout, is accented with a dark line on either side. Another line runs from the eyes to the tip of the neck. A hypomelanistic variety of Argentine Boa Constrictor is also available.

Black Rat Snake Elaphe obsoleta The black rat snake is one of the biggest snakes in New England, growing up to eight feet in length. They range all across West Virginia and most of the eastern United States, though they are not common in Massachusetts. The state lists these snakes as endangered. Adult black rat snakes are black with a whitish belly. They are primarily a forest-dwelling animal, but may also wander into a variety of other habitats such as swamp borders, river flood plains, abandoned sawdust piles, rocky hillsides, mountain ledges, farm buildings and even abandoned dwellings. These snakes are powerful constrictors, suffocating small birds, squirrels, rats or rabbits and swallowing them whole. They often live in bushes and brush growing along dusty country roads or highways. Black rat snakes can also climb trees! Many of them will actually live in trees. The red-tailed hawk is one of the black rat snake's greatest enemies. More often than not, it is considered to be the farmer's friend because of the rodent control it offers. They avoid human contact and pose absolutely no danger, even if bitten. EcoTarium is home to one black rat snake, which lives in the

Boa constrictor

The boa constrictor is a non-poisonous tropical snake belonging to a specialized group of reptiles the first vertebrate class completely independent of water. It is found in Central and South America and often reaches lengths of up to 4 m (13 ft.). It belongs to the same family as the python and anaconda, which reach lengths of up to 9 or 10m. The boa constrictor's life span is about 25 to 30 years. Some boas live in underground holes while others live in trees.
Their prey consists mainly of birds and small mammals such as rats and agoutis. Boas seize their prey in their jaws, then entwine it in their powerful body coils and kill it by suffocation. Boas still have vestiges of a pair of hind limbs. They are one of the most beautifully coloured reptiles.
This species is hunted for the skin trade, and products made from boa skin are common in souvenir shops. The boa constrictor is nominally protected by the Appendices to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), with the intention of controlling international trade.

FAMILY BOIDAE
The boa constrictor and the anaconda are the two best known snakes from the Boidae family. The group is found generally in Central and South America, although some rare species occur in North America, southeastern Europe, Madagascar and New Guinea. Whether terrestrial, arboreal, aquatic or burrowing, these powerful constrictors suffocate their prey in their coils. The head is clearely differentiated from the trunk, except in the burrowing species, and the mouth is large, with jaws that are longer than the skull, except in the burrowing species. The upper jaw moves easily in relation to the skull with the upper and lower mandibles able to unhinge, allowing large prey to be swallowed whole. The presence of vestigal hindlegs, consisting of a pelvis and femurs forming an anal spur in adult males, is a rare example of sexual dimorphism in the Reptiles. Three subfamilies are described; pythons, boas and sand boas. A giant relative of the boa is the anaconda ( Eunectes murinus ). This huge snake has a large head characteristically not generally distinct from the neck area. The body is exceptionally stocky, as compared to other boas, and extremely muscular reaching lengths in excess of 30 feet. Native to tropical South America, this aquatic and arboreal species is always in the vicinity of water where it hunts, and is often found sunning itself on overhanging branches, rocks and warm sand. Lying beneath the surface of the water, with only its snout extending above the surface, the anaconda waits for almost anything that passes by, including capybara, agouti, paca, birds, fish, snakes and occasionally caimans. Following a large meal, anacondas often stretch out on a warm sand bank to digest its meal which may take several days.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Boas Scientific classification Scientific classification refers to how biologists group and categorize extinct and living species of organisms. Modern classification has its roots in the system of Carolus Linnaeus, who grouped species according to shared physical characteristics. These groupings have been revised since Linnaeus to improve consistency with the Darwinian principle of common descent. Molecular systematics, which uses Genomic DNA analysis has driven many recent revisions and is likely to continue to do so. Scientific classification belongs to the science of taxonomy or biological systematics.
Click the link for more information. Kingdom In biology, a kingdom is the top-level, or nearly the top-level, grouping of organisms in scientific classification. Originally, two kingdoms were distinguished, the Animalia (animals), which typically could move about, and the Plantae (plants), which typically could not. Early authors also had a third kingdom for minerals. Each kingdom was divided into classes, later into phyla for animals and divisions for plants. This simplistic classification has been largely abandoned thanks to new developments, however.
