Caging
We keep our boas in enclosures that are designed with snakes in mind so their depth and width are is greater then their height. We use sweaterbox racks for neonates. It is important to make sure that your enclosure is escape proof. It will need to be large enough to contain a hide and a water dish as well as have a heat gradient. Your snake should have enough room to have its entire body either in the hot spot, or the cool spot. Heating
Racks and tanks should be set up to have a good heat gradient of approximately 95 F on the hot side and 75 F on the cool side. Heat tape or under tank heaters with a rheostat/thermostat is recommended to achieve this. Without some sort of temperature regulation, it would be very easy for your heating system to reach temperatures that were harmful to your snake. We absolutely recommend AGAINST using electric heat rocks for any reptile. They have been known to cause severe injury and even death by burning.

Like all members of this group, boas are constrictors—that is, they kill their prey by squeezing it to death and then they swallow it whole. Boas use the coils of their body to suffocate their prey, rather than crushing it, as is commonly believed. They can stretch their jaws wide apart to swallow animals larger than their heads. Depending on the size of its prey, a boa may take several weeks or longer to digest its food. Many of the exceptionally large snakes of the world are of this family, but not all boas are large. Some are no more than 50 cm (20 in) long when fully grown. Boas vary greatly in color and pattern.

CALZOO'S REFERENCE SHEET > Boa Constrictors Latin name Boa constrictor Maximum length 6 - 8 feet (approx) Native to Colombia Approximate life span 20+ years GENERAL INFORMATION
This is one of the most popular pet snakes due to their great temperament and beautiful markings. All the baby boas sold by California Zoological Supply are captive or farm bred. The baby season starts in January and ends around June. Boas are arboreal (tree climbing) snakes, so provide lots of climbing branches so they can move about. They are also nocturnal (active at night) so you will more than likely not see them move much during the day. These are great animals for anyone who wants something impressive and of a nice size but one that doesn't get too large. Albino Boa Constrictors are also slowly showing up on the market. The price is still prohibitive for most hobbyists, but should decrease in a few years.
ENCLOSURE
The enclosure should be no shorter than ½ the snakes body length. Baby Boas can live in a 20-gallon aquarium for up to a year but be prepared to get a larger enclosure later on. Boas are notorious escape artists so your enclosure can never be too secure. To avoid respiratory infections, the enclosure should provide plenty of ventilation. A secure hiding place is also important.
SUBSTRATE
As a substrate you can use Zoo Med REPTI-BARK™, Zoo Med CAGE CARPET or pine shavings. But DO NOT, under any circumstances, use cedar shavings! Its oils are toxic to reptiles. The substrate should remain dry.

BOA CONSTRICTOR DE AFGODSLANG Dit dier is absoluut mijn favoriet.

She came into our lives on April 16th, 2002, and has made a wonderful addition to our family, which is currently composed of two humans, two dogs, and a snake. Angelica was born on April 13, 2001 at the facilities of Mr. Jeff Ronne / The Boaphile , one of the largest and best-known breeders of boa constrictors in the world. She is from Jeff's "Fine Line" bloodline, so named for the distinctive pattern of blotches, also known as "saddles", on her back. If you get a good look at her, you'll see that the saddles themselves are very narrow and are connected by very fine lineshence the name, Fine Line. Angelica is housed in a Boaphile Plastics enclosure that measures 48" wide X 29" deep x 24" tall. The enclosure itself is composed of two levels; only the lower level is visible in this camera. However, you can also see the two hide pots that she uses when she wants a little privacy, her water bowl, and her two climbing sticks that she loves to perch onespecially in the afternoon, or when she wants to be fed, or whenever she just feels like "hanging out"!

Is the boa constrictor in 'The Little Prince' different from the one in 'Harry Potter'? (Japanese version)
Boa constrictors don't exactly figure large in most people's lives, but for some reason they occur in two popular works of children's literature: The Little Prince Le petit prince Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J. K. Rowling. In Chapter One of The Little Prince the author in his childhood showed adults a drawing of a boa constrictor ( serpent boa in the original French) that had swallowed an elephant. Unimaginative adults thought it looked like a hat. The author drew another picture showing the elephant inside the boa constrictor, whereupon adults advised him to concentrate on his schoolwork. Much later in the book, the author, now an adult himself, meets the mysterious little prince who instantly recognises the picture as a boa constrictor that has swallowed an elephant. In Chapter Two of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone , Harry talks to a boa constrictor at the zoo. According to the sign, boa constrictors are from Brazil although the boa constrictor on display was born in the zoo. In a moment of confusion, Harry unconsciously lets the snake escape.

Re: What's something you would like to see BANNED from movies? Kevin Sharp » Posted by: Joel Stein It really annoys me when harmless animals are supposed to be deadly. Off the top of my head, TWO FACE OF DR JEKYLL and DR PHIBES RISES AGAIN both have non-venomous boa constrictors playing venomous snakes. Tarantulas have venom, but their bites are far from deadly (DR NO). Those huge black Emperor scorpions are harmless, too, but they are always dispatching people in the movies.

General Information Distribution Habitat Adult Size
— Female Boa Constrictors can be expected to reach sizes of 305 cm to 375 cm (10' - 12'). Males stay a little bit smaller, generally around 244 cm (8'). Baby boas are between 36 cm and 56cm (14" - 22"). Temperament Longevity Captive Care Rating Diet : Young - hopper mice; Adults - small rabbits Temperature : 25OC to 29OC (76 to 85 F). Space : A fully grown Boa Constrictor can be housed in a minimum sized enclosure of 6'x2'x2'. Younger boas can be kept in a 20 to 35 gallon terrarium until they get a little larger. Breeding : Boa Constrictors are sexually mature at 2.5 to 5 years of age. Cycling is necessary to induce breeding which normally occurs between September and February. Gestation usually lasts 4 to 8 months with litters of 25 to 30 produced. Special Requirements : Boa Constrictors are a pretty hardy snake. As long as you give them enough space and remember to keep them warm (as it is sometimes hard to keep a large enclosure warm), you should have a long lived and healthy snake.
