Boa Constrictor
ORDER: Squamata
FAMILY: Boidae
GENUS: Boa
SPECIES: constrictor constrictor
I. DESCRIPTION:
Closely related to the python, the boa constrictor is pale sandy brown (which may have a pink cast) with 15 to 20 chocolate brown marks on its back. Normally grows to a length of 10 feet. The largest boa constrictor ever caught was 18.5 feet long.
II. GEOGRAPHICAL RANGE AND HABITAT:
Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. Boa constrictors may forage in the trees but they are mainly terrestrial, especially the larger ones, and live in hollow logs, mammal burrows, etc.
III. DIET:
Consists chiefly of birds, iguanas, and monkeys.
IV. LIFE CYCLE/SOCIAL STRUCTURE:
The female boa constrictor bears her young alive (ovoviviparous) and has been known to give birth to as many as 64 at one time. The young are about 24 inches long.
V. SPECIAL ADAPTATIONS:
Has a keen sense of smell used to detect the presence of other animals. It kills its prey by coiling around and suffocating rather than crushing. As with other snakes, the boa's loosely hinged jaws can be stretched far apart, enabling it to swallow animals with bodies much larger in diameter than the boa's head.

Some of the Boa Constrictor species are less than 1 meter; others are the largest snakes in the world. Boa Constrictors are also called "Red-Tail Boas." Pet stores and snake aficionados use this name to detract people's attention from their proper name that can sound threatening. Many, but not all Boa Constrictors are red-tailed. Mostly Boa Constrictors are imported from Brazil, Columbia, Amazon, Guyana, and Surinam. In South America they are kept as house pets to kill rats. Nowadays Boa Constrictors are very popular as house pets.

The Boa Constrictor is a large, solitary snake from Central and South American rainforests savannas , and semi-arid areas . Boas are kept as house-snakes in parts of South America, where the boas help by catching and suffocating rats. The Boa Constrictor is related to the larger Anaconda . Boas give birth to live young; up to 64 2-ft (60-cm) long baby snakes are born at one time. All species of boas are either endangered or protected. Hunting and Diet : Boa Constrictors are carnivores (meat-eaters). They mainly hunt at night (they are generally nocturnal ). Boas kill by constricting (squeezing) the prey until it can no longer breathe. Sometimes they drown the prey. Like all snakes, they swallow the prey whole, head first. The boa's top and bottom jaws are attached to each other with stretchy ligaments, which let the snake swallow animals wider than itself. Snakes don't chew their food, they digest it with very strong acids in the snake's stomach. Boa Constrictors eat birds, small

Reptiles The world's 8,100 species of reptiles inhabit every continent except Antarctica. Reptiles include turtles, snakes, crocodiles, and lizards. They can be as small as the dwarf gecko (less than an inch long) or as big as the saltwater crocodile, which can weigh more than a ton. They all have scales, but some reptiles' scales are modified, so you can't see them. They are all ectothermic (their body temperature is regulated by their environment). Most lay eggs, but a few species give birth to live young. Reptiles are among the world's most fascinating animals. Amphibians There are more than 5,500 species of amphibians on Earth, including frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts. For many amphibians, they begin life in the water—the young have gills and lack legs when they hatch from eggs laid in the water. They metamorphose, growing legs and changing in other ways to live on land. The word "amphibian" comes from Greek—both lives. Amphibians became the first vertebrates to live on land, and like their "cold-blooded" reptile relatives, depend on external energy sources (such as the sun) to maintain their body temperatures. more about being cold-blooded Discover the Zoo's reptiles and amphibians:

World Wonders Atlas Wildlife Celebrities ... WonderClub.com BOA CONSTRICTOR The boa constrictor kills its prey by constriction. Once it catches its victim, the snake wraps its body around the prey in coils, tightening its grip each time the victim breathes out. Eventually no longer able to breathe, the prey dies by suffocation. HABITAT The boa constrictor's preferred habitat is rainforest, but it it also found in semiarid savannah. Because its range covers such a large area, the boa constrictor varies considerably in color, marking, and size. On Hog Island, off Central America, the boa constrictor is seldom longer than 3 feet; in most of Central America, it reaches 10 feet, while in Trinidad and Venezuela, it can grow to 20 feet. In the warmer areas, the boa constrictor is active throughout the year. However, in the cooler climes, it may spend long periods of time inactive. BREEDING After fertilization, the eggs remain in the female's body, where they develop over several months inside thin membranes. Unlike its close relative, the python, the boa constrictor gives birth to live fully formed young. The protective membranes rupture as the young are released. As many as sixty snakes are born at one time, each measuring 17-20 inches. The young boa constrictor begins feeding within a week or two after its birth and grows quickly, usually reaching a yard in length after several months. It is sexually mature at 2-3 years when it reaches 6-10 feet.

Photo by Adam Boa constrictors are a species of snake common in the pet trade. In nature, they range from northern Mexico, throughout most of Central and South America, and as far south as Argentina. There are many subspecies of Boa Constrictor, but for the sake of simplicity, this care sheet focuses on the two most common: Boa Constrictor Imperators (or BCI for short) are the most common boas. They include all the Boas from Central America, the Caribbean Isles, and Columbia. While Colombian Boas are the most common species available, many of the Central American species are gaining popularity. Colombian Boas reach a maximum adult size of 6-7 feet for males and 7-9 feet for females. Some of the localities of BCI reach smaller sizes such as the popular Hog Island boa. Males of this locality rarely (if ever) exceed 6 feet. Boa Constrictor Constrictors (or BCC) are also known as "True Redtails". They range from western Columbia through Guyana, Venezuela, and Surinam. They tend to be larger with maximum adult sizes ranging from 7-9 feet for males and 8-12 feet for females. Their colors tend to have higher contrast and their tails do tend to be a bit redder than BCI. I have heard reports of them being slightly more aggressive than BCI, but I have never actually observed this behavior. It is generally held that BCI make better first Boas.
