Under the block schedule, high school teachers generally teach for onlythree periods each day, and have 90 minutes of preparation time.

A School System That Abandoned The Block
After a great deal of very careful research and thought, and following much discussion, it has been decided to return to the traditional seven-period day at BHHS for the upcoming 1998-99 school year. This important change has been based on a thorough review of all the advantages and disadvantages of a number of different master schedule formats, including the "block schedule" which was implemented at BHHS four years ago. This decision has been based on the unanimous recommendation of the Administration, including the Superintendent, the Curriculum Director, the High School Principal, and the High School Assistant Principal, following months of deliberation The seven-period day format is a more traditional approach to scheduling high school courses. In this type of schedule, subjects are taught all year long, with each subject being taught every day in sessions that last approximately 50 minutes each. In most cases, students take six subjects (or courses), and devote one period each day to a study hail. Note that the more capable and ambitious students may choose to enroll for seven classes, thus increasing the number of electives they are able to take. The block schedule has many variations. However, in the format being used at BHHS, subjects are taught only one semester, with each subject taught every day for approximately 90 minutes. Students generally take only three or four subjects (or courses) during each semester.

Quick clarification: I only referred to standard block as bad. I have
no idea if A/B is good or not because I've had almost no
exposure to it but I didn't mean to imply that A/B block should be
ruled out as a way to schedule. ...LONG wrote:

BLOCK SCHEDULE TASK FORCE Creation of Block Schedule Task Force The reorganization of Perry High School's daily schedule into a block arrangement presents the school with formidable challenges and significant opportunities. One of the challenges we face is to ensure that the new initiative is implemented within the parameters of the District Strategic Plan:
A. is consistent with our beliefs and contributes to our mission
B. is accompanied by staff development necessary for its effective implementation
C. projects a favorable return on investment The 4X4 Block Schedule has facilitated initial improvements in attendance and discipline. However, the most significant outcome of the reorganization should be realized in the new opportunities that can be created for all students who have greater room in their school schedules to experience the high school curriculum Along with these new opportunities should be a higher expectation for achievement. Therefore, I recommend that a Block Schedule Task Force be established to develop the following:
A new Perry High School Statement of Philosophy and Standards- - the existing statements were written in 1987 and re-evaluated as part of the 1990 NCA Self-Evaluation. The next NCA self-study is scheduled for the 1997-98 school year. A new statement of philosophy and standards would be timely and provide direction for decisions p g to the implementation of the block schedule. The new statements should be congruent with the Mission Statement, Beliefs and Objectives of the Perry Public Schools written m 1994.

My middle school operates on a 5 period day...3 periods of core subjects (85 minutes each), 1 period of academy/enrichmentextra help in reading, math, or meet with G.T. students (42 minutes), and one period of Related arts (P.E.2 cycles, educational dance, art, computer keyboarding, music). Our school day lasts from 7:50 until 3:15. I do like teaching in the block, because I'm not pressed for time. Unfortunately, because my school only has 3 periods reserved for core subjects, and there are 4 core subjects, both science and social studies teachers only meet with their students every other day. It's not the best arrangement, but my school's reading and math scores are SO low, they're prioritizing.

They have explored the ideas of smaller learning communities, block scheduling, house structure, advocacy, academies as well as evaluating what is working and should stay the same. Their goal was to develop recommendations and plan for implementation. q The Task Force is composed of 25-30 people, representing students, teachers, parents and instructional support staff. Meetings have been held bi-monthly, with six sub-committees formed this year to address specific components. q The process used to explore block scheduling involved visits to and contact with high schools throughout New York State. They include Monroe- Woodbury, Liverpool, Fayetteville-Manlius, Brockport, Guilderland, Burnt Hills, Ballston Spa, Corinth, Averill Park, Niskayuna. q A consultant with experience in this area worked with the Task Force for two years facilitating the work and providing information. Thinking Inside the Block Schedule : Strategies for Teaching in Extended Periods of Time > Customer Review #1: more than you expect

Hi! I borrowed this book from a professor at a class I was taking. At first I was disappointed; I was looking for some concise information on teaching in the block schedule. Instead, I found this book to be a broad resource containing much educational reference material (such as Blooms taxonomy, Gardners multiple intelligences, etc.) as well as an excellent in-depth overview of teaching in the block schedule. The format of the book is interesting, too. The chapters are laid out using the analogy of putting on a play. Youll have to look at it to see what I mean.
