Black Widow Spider
The female black widow is shiny black usually with a red hourglass shape or two triangles together on the underside of her round shaped stomach. She hangs upside down so it is easy to see the color. The black widow spider weaves a tangled web. It is poisonous to humans. When its web is disturbed it will use its poison. They have a red spot on their stomach. Black widows like to live in hot areas. The black widow is the best of the cob web weavers. A black widow spider's poison is ten times more powerful than the rattlesnake's bite. Black Widow Spider Latrodectus mactans The infamous black widow spider is just one of 30,000+ recognized members of the carnivorous spider order that catches insects with webs or jaws. Its venom is 15 times more potent than an equal weight of rattlesnake venom but its 1.7 mm (.07 in.) fangs inject a much smaller amount. Arachnids not only eat but are eaten by many insects. Some gather and store live, paralyzed spiders within their nests for hungry offspring. For this reason, the black widow, like most other spiders, retreats to a far corner of the web when threatened. It then curls up its legs and plays dead. All widows weave their their tangled webs in quiet and protected areas under boards or rocks and in burrows or tree cavities. HGIC 2505 http://hgic.clemson.edu Poisonous Spiders of South Carolina Almost all spiders are capable of producing venomous bites. However, there are very few species of spiders in the United States and South Carolina that produce harmful bites. The U.S. Public Health Service reports that poisonous bites are a very minor cause of death in the United States. Annually, venomous animals produce death as follows: bees, 12; wasps and other hymenoptera, 10; snakes, 14; spiders, six; and scorpions, one. In South Carolina, two groups of spiders, the widow (Theridiidae: Lactrodectus species) and the recluse (Loxoscelidae: Loxosceles species) spiders, are of most concern and will be discussed in detail. Two other species, Chirocanthium inclusum (a common running spider) and Argiope aurantia (the black and yellow garden spider), have occasionally been reported as inflicting serious bites in humans. None of these bites produced death or prolonged illness. WIDOW SPIDERS Description: The widow spiders are large with mature females measuring 1½ inches with legs extended. Most people are familiar with the southern black widow ( Lactrodectus mactans ), a glossy black spider with a complete red hourglass marking on the underside of its abdomen. The northern black widow (

Latrodectus mactans (Fabricius). The southern black widow spider is glossy black and has a complete hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. The northern black widow, L. variolus Walchenaer, has the same general appearance but has two red triangles resembling an hourglass, and a row of red spots on top of the abdomen. The southern black widow is usually found outdoors in protected places, such as under rocks and boards and in and around old buildings. The bite of the black widow and other widow spiders usually feels like a pin prick. The initial pain disappears rapidly leaving local swelling and two tiny red marks. Muscular cramps in the shoulder, thigh and back usually begin within 15 minutes to three hours. In severe cases, pain spreads to the abdomen, the blood pressure rises, there is nausea, sweating and difficulty in breathing. Death may result, depending on the victim's physical condition, age and location of bite. Death seldom occurs if a physician is consulted and treatment is prompt. Poisonous Spiders
Introduction
The spiders listed on this page commonly are found within nurseries. While they can be listed as predators of insects, the insects they prey upon are more likely to be beneficial insects rather than insect pests. Their source of food aside, they are included here because they are also poisonous and may cause problems with nursery employees. Most spider bites are not likely to be dangerous, but medical care and advice should be sought in each case and it is important to save any biting spider so it can be identified.
Widow Spiders
The black widow spider is found throughout the western hemisphere, and is extremely common in the southern United States. In fact, four species of widow spiders occur in Florida: the southern black widow, the northern black widow, the red widow and the brown widow. All these species are rather large spiders, about 1 1/2 inches long with the legs extended. The southern black widow and the northern black widow are a shiny, jet-black color. The southern black widow has a red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen and another red spot at the tip end of the abdomen. The northern black widow has a row of red spots located in the middle of its back and two reddish triangles resembling an hourglass on the underside of the abdomen. The

Photo by Jackman. Common Name: Black widow spider
    Scientific Name: Latrodectus mactans Fabricius
Order: Araneae Description: There are more than 25 Latrodectus species world wide. Contrary to common belief, the female does not consume the male in most situations, except when held together in cages from which the male cannot escape. Examination of the genitalia is the proper way to identify species in this group. The species in Texas can be separated to some degree by the shape of the red markings on the abdomen and the location. The western black widow, Latrodectus hesperus L. hesperus have been found in which the adults retain their brilliant immature colors. Further west, the coloration of the species appears to grade back to black. The northern black widow Latrodectus variolus Walckenaer, usually has the hourglass divided, typically with red spots on the dorsum and white lines on the sides. This species occurs throughout much of the eastern half of the U.S.

The female black widow spider (Latrodectus spp.) is a poisonous spider that has a somewhat round, shiny black abdomen with red markings that resemble an hourglass on the underside. The size of the body is approximately 1/2 inch wide and 1 1/2 to 1 3/8 inches long. Despite common opinion, the female rarely kills the male after mating. BIOLOGY
Five different species of the black widow spider are prevalent in the United States. They generally live under rocks and under fallen trees outside the home. In and around the house they are often found in firewood piles, basements and crawlspaces . They are also found in secluded places, such as garages and sheds. They feed on insects and other spiders that are trapped in their web. They are usually not aggressive spiders, but if handled or accidentally touched, they may bite. SOLUTION
To avoid getting bitten by the black widow, wear leather gloves when working around potential habitats. Use caution around spider webs in basements and crawl spaces. If a black widow is encountered, contact a pest control professional.

http://www.sdnhm.org/fieldguide/inverts/latr-hes.html
Latrodectus hesperus
Black Widow Spider THERIDIIDAE Description Also called the "hourglass" or "shoe-button" spider, a name derived from the crimson markings on the underside of the abdomen. The adult female has a unique shiny black and bulbous abdomen and may reach a length of 1-1/4 inches. The smaller, 1/4-inch-long male is brown with red and white markings, including the abdominal hourglass design. This spider produces a neurotoxic venom 15 times more virulent than an equal amount of rattlesnake poison. Despite this distinction, only one death every five years in the United States can be attributed to this spider because few people are bitten and little venom is injected with each bite. Range and Habitat The Black Widow spider is common throughout the southern United States. Webs can be found in undisturbed, recessed areas including woodpiles, garages, fence rows, debris and abandoned animal burrows. Natural History In the summer, after mating and perhaps, but not always, making a meal of the male, the female will begin constructing a number of egg sacs, each containing 50 to 250 eggs. The whitish spiderlings hatch within a few months. They begin feeding and gradually develop into adults in one to two years; some females live as long as three years. The black widow conceals itself in a funnel-shaped retreat connected to an irregular mesh of coarse silk close to the ground where it entangles prey: cockroaches, earwigs and crickets.
