Our original lesson plans are developed by Thirteen Ed Online Master Teachers. Starting with tried-and-true lessons that work in the classroom, our Web-savvy teachers have built Web-based activities that use the rich resources of Thirteen/WNET New York and the Internet.
Each month, we will create new lessons based upon outstanding PBS series and around outstanding Web resources.

Hank Williams: My Inspiration
In this lesson, students will watch the AMERICAN MASTERS episode "Hank Williams: Honky Tonk Blues" and use what they learn to help analyze some of his most popular songs. Students will discuss whether or not they feel they can understand an artist through his writing. Finally, students will use Williams's methods of inspiration to pen their own lyrics or poetry.
Exploring "Heroism"
In honor of the heroes of September 11th, students will explore the concept of "heroism" in this lesson, through personal reflection, group activities and a thoughtful analysis of Thirteen's documentary, HEROES OF GROUND ZERO. Students will use different forms of writing, various artistic media and computer software to create a group presentation on the theme of "heroism." Design A Community Program This lesson, inspired by the work of the Center for Family Life in A BROOKLYN FAMILY TALE, lets students design an innovative community program to address the needs of their community.

COOL TEACHING LESSONS AND UNITS ALONG WITH RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS Short Cuts: WEBQUEST UNITS RESEARCH MODULES ONLINE PROJECTS READY MADE UNITS ... STUDENT RESOURCES Some personal notes about this web page: It is designed as a resource for teachers K-12 who wish to find quality ready-made units and lessons for all subjects, or who wish to develop their own units. This page emphasizes engaged learning models such as WebQuests, Research Modules and Problem-Based Learning, but links include other forms of lessons and tutorials. Included also are sites to help you build your own units as well as some examples of sources to help students do research.
Some of these units depend on the ability of students to do interactive work with others using technology. However, even if you have one or no computer in your classroom, most of the units linked at this site can be of much help. They are great learning experiences not only because of technology, but because they also involve students in activities that challenge them to solve problems by doing quality research, analyzing information, synthesizing possibilities, making judgments and then creating interesting products in order to communicate their results. Technology can be used as tools in making these exciting learning experiences even deeper, richer and more motivating.
There is no glitz in this page - just links to wonderful ways for your students to learn. Enjoy!

Lessons to Celebrate Black History Month!
February is the annual observance of Black History Month, a time to recognize the achievements, contributions, and culture of African Americans. This week, Education World offers ten innovative activities to start your celebration of Black History Month and to help you incorporate the African American experience into your curriculum all year long! Included: Challenge students to create ABC books, murals, and more about famous African Americans! This February marks the 25th anniversary of Black History Month. In 1926, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson , an African American historian, writer, and educator, established Negro History Week to honor the contributions of African Americans. Often called the "Father of Black History," Woodson chose February for this observance because the birthdays of abolitionist Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln fall in this month. During the early 1970s, the name of the celebration was changed to Black History Week. It was expanded to Black History Month in 1976.
