African Americans have played a vital role in the history and culture of their country since its founding. An important part of the curriculum at the Institute for African American Studies is devoted to creative research on the lives and work of prominent African Americans and to placing them within their cultural context. On this page you will find brief biographical sketches of several key figures in African American history.
Benjamin Banneker
Benjamin Banneker's Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia Almanack and Epheremis, published during the years 1792-1797. He retired from tobacco farming to concentrate wholly upon his studies. He corresponded with Thomas Jefferson and urged Jefferson to work for the abolition of slavery.
Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth, a nationally known speaker on human rights for slaves and women, was born Isabella Baumfree, a slave in Hurley, New York, and spoke only Dutch during her childhood. Sold and resold, denied her choice in husband, and treated cruelly by her masters, Truth ran away in 1826, leaving all but one of her children behind. After her freedom was bought for $25, she moved to New York City in 1829 and became a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. In 1853, she helped form a utopian community called "The Kingdom," at Sing Sing, New York, which was soon disbanded following the death and possible murder of its leader. Truth was implicated in the scandal but courageously fought the falsehoods aimed at her. After the death of her son, she took the name Sojourner Truth to signify her new role as traveler telling the truth about slavery. She set out on June 1, 1843, walking for miles in a northeasterly direction with 25 cents in her pocket, and rested only when she found lodging offered by either rich or poor. First she attended religious meetings, then began to hold meetings herself that would bring audience members to tears. As she logged mile after mile, her fame grew and her reputation preceded her. Truth's popularity was enhanced by her biography written by the abolitionist Olive Gilbert, with a preface written by William Lloyd Garrison. In 1864, she was invited to the White House, where President Abraham Lincoln personally received her. Later she served as a counselor for the National Freedman's Relief Association, retiring in 1875 to Battle Creek, Michigan.

Last modified on November 10, 2001. THE AFRICAN AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM
A BRIEF HISTORY
One of the major gains of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s was that of opening doors of previously all-white colleges and universities to African American students. Emboldened by the spirit of rebellion found throughout the nation during the latter part of the decade, these students began demanding not only admission to these schools but a curriculum which was responsive to their particular needs as African Americans. They insisted that the schools offer courses on the history and culture of African Americans and that black faculty be hired to teach these courses. The African and African-American Studies Program here at UTK traces its origins to this period. During the 1968-69 school year, the University offered two "black" courses: The Afro-American Family, and Black History. The next academic year saw the establishment of a number of new courses that dealt with African Americans through the Religious Studies and English Departments. By September of 1969 these courses were combined with several others that had grown up in other departments over the years to form the nucleus for a new minor in the College of Liberal Arts. A few dedicated faculty, aided by a grant from the Chancellor's office, sought to secure the place of Black Studies within the university community. Audiovisual materials were purchased, and consultants and speakers were brought to the campus. These activities provided the foundation for the establishment of a Black Studies Program.

Louisiana Black Women:
An Ignored History by Jan Doherty This paper was selected by the Department of History as the Outstanding Paper for the 1985-1986 academic year. There is an aspect of the history of Louisiana that has been essentially neglected. The role of women, particularly the contributions of the black woman, is all but eliminated in the texts that attempt to outline the achievements of explorer, governor, and merchant in the development of Louisiana. Historian Gerda Lerner notes that "the modern historian is dependent on the availability of sources. The kind of sources collected depends to a large extent on the interests, prejudices and values of the collectors, archivists and historians of an earlier day." < This observation was also made by W. E. B. DuBois in 1951 when he wrote, "We have the record of kings and gentlemen ad nauseam and in stupid detail, but of the common run of human being . . . the world has saved all too little of authentic record and tried to forget or ignore even the little saved." < Such has been the case with the role of women in history. Arthur Schlesinger Sr. wrote in 1922 that "from reading history textbooks one would think half of our population made only a negligible contribution to history." <

The Jersey Shore's News Source New Amistad Commission's mandate: Teach black history year-round Published in the Asbury Park Press 2/23/03 By CHANDRA M. HAYSLETT
STAFF WRITER Kristin Villari said her ninth-grade history lessons are devoid of diversity. She said she learns about the plight of black people and their contributions to American society mostly in February when black history is recognized. "We really only learn about Europe," said the 15-year-old, who attends Manchester High School. The lessons will extend beyond history class, said New Jersey Secretary of State Regena L. Thomas. For example, if a student is studying jazz in a music class, the teacher could emphasize the pivotal role black musicians played in creating jazz. "The inclusion of African-American history into the core curriculum is needed in order to have a full appreciation of history," she said. "You have to understand what happened (in history). The curriculum will span the entire nine months, not just February." On Aug. 28, Gov. McGreevey signed into law the "Amistad Bill," which created the commission; members were appointed this month. The commission was named in honor of enslaved Africans who gained their freedom after overthrowing the crew of the Amistad, a cargo ship that left Havana bound for this country in 1839.

H-Net Teaching and Technology Essays
Series Editor - Steven Mintz H-Net is commissioning a series of essays on teaching and technology. TeaSearch: Research That Can Also Teach
by Richard Latner, Tulane University During the mid-1980s, my career as a historian lurched in a surprising new direction when I became involved in a project to utilize computers in classroom teaching. I ventured into the world of the "new new thing" with little notion that computers, let alone the nascent Internet, were about to revolutionize so much of the way we conduct our lives. My motives were considerably more mundane: If my project was approved, not only would my department be awarded a small lab of personal computers but (and this was the hook) I would receive one for myself. By this time, many of my colleagues were using computers for word processing. The temptation for a free computer was too great to resist. Two years later, when the project was completed, I could step to the head of the line to testify that there is no free lunch. I could have bought a computer in considerably less time and with incalculably less effort by summer teaching or waiting tables at restaurants, as one of my colleagues did to supplement his income. Nevertheless, I not only had my little MacPlus but also an opening glimpse into how computers were going to affect the future of scholars, both as researchers and teachers.

How to Teach Black History Month
Table of Contents SECTION ONE: BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE FOR
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
FOREWORD
A nationally recognized scholar in the field of African American studies, history, and/or politics briefly overviews the approach of the book and its value to teachers, administrators, board members and parents in responding to the responsibilities commanded by Black History Month. Chapter 1 - Introduction: Description of the Problem
In this chapter we address the historical dimensions of the problem of the lack of attention to the history and experience of African Americans? We specifically address the problems in this regard relative to the training of the nation's educators. We also explore in detail the historical background, ideas and significance of Black History Week as a point of departure and its evolution to Black History Month. Finally, we offer to teachers, administrators, board members and parents ideas to enrich the academic experience of students during the month of February and throughout the academic year.
Chapter 2 - The Rise of African American Studies and the
Multicultural Movement in Historical Perspective
This chapter focuses on the rise of African American Studies as an interdisciplinary academic field of study and multiculturalism as a response to the problem of the exclusion of African Americans, women and other groups from the social mainstream. Significant attention will be given to the issue of multiculturalism at the elementary, middle, secondary levels of education. Also, the relationship between the rise of multiculturalism and the importance of incorporating material regarding the experience of African Americans and other groups is explored with particular attention on the utilization of Black History Month as a vehicle to help accomplish this objective.

e s s a y r o b e r t c a s t l e Given: teenagers are indifferent to history or, what amounts to the same, feel history is utterly useless subject matter. Given: teenagers in high school must be taught at least one, possibly two years of history, probably American History and/or World Cultures. Given: theoretical and conceptual discussions in high school generate little or no interest. I start many History courses by asking two questions: “What is history?” “Why should we study history?” Students answer perfunctorily, from lack of interest and from my insistence on answers. Responses fall into several categories: History is the totality of events that have happened up to the present moment. History, one way or another, is manipulated ( ergo , unreliable if not mostly lies). History repeats itself. History is necessary for humans to avoid making the same mistakes (not really an answer to the question and is usually said by those who believe this is an answer I’m looking for). The first response represents student logic more than anything else. It seems reasonable to assume that history is the sum of all that has happened before. The history they will study happened “before.” There are no courses called “Future history.” The logic extends to the events themselves. For example: when a candidate wins the most votes, he wins the election. Sometimes the frail student is logic is so easy to crack that there’s no real sport left, as, for example, when I discuss the electoral college in the elections of

Well suited to younger readers, this "conjure tale" is the story of Mama Marina, a slave who wins her daughter's freedom from slavery by putting a spell on Master Alston's grapes.
