Month long celebration will teach black history By Caroline Lawrence The Herald Staff February marks the celebration of Black History Month. The Student Activities Board is collaborating with many campus sororities and fraternities to sponsor activities honoring black history. Dwayne Scott, director of minority student development, said students should learn about their background because it gives them an opportunity to reflect on their culture and heritage, he said. Students could see where they come from and look toward their future, he said. Most events taking place this month are traditional for Arkansas State University's student organizations. Scott said the organizations honoring Black History Month plan the activities themselves and submit their ideas to the Student Life Office. The students set up their guest speakers and plan their events. Scott said he arranges the calendar so no activities conflict. Several events, such as a black faculty and staff appreciation banquet, a salute to black men and a salute to black women took place earlier in February. During Black History Month, the university will dedicate Unity Park as a historical black landmark in a ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday. The park is behind Twin Towers.

To Guide Entry I am a special education teacher at East Rock Global Magnet School. I teach in a fifth grade inclusion classroom. The curriculum is adapted to meet the academic needs required for special needs students. Literacy is the major focus in our school system. Literacy addresses reading, writing and speaking. In my unit the choices of literature will reflect the past and present issues in African American History. The children will read and discuss in creative ways what the author is trying to convey to the audience. Literacy is vital to a child's growth. It opens up a whole new world when they're able to read and be able to understand what they've read. I will center my literature on the Underground Railroad, Civil Rights Era, and the book entitled, Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges There are discrepancies and a lack of factual information in regard to African American History. I will choose two or three movies, and let the children go beyond what was presented during these movies through reading additional literature and researching various topics presented. In order to better interpret the movie and gain a better understanding of race and ethnicity, my students will compare and contrast the information presented in the movie(s) versus non-fictional literature.

Have the children make a collection of 100 items and display them on a poster board Make up your own trail mix using 100 items of each ingredient Line up 100 children Say hello in 100 languages This idea is from Cathy N.: After exercising 100 times, (10 jumping jacks + 10times touching toes, etc.), I take out a stop watch and we have 100 seconds of silence. I really enjoy that 100 seconds! Here is an idea sent from Melissa Troutman, Pekin, Illinois: We worked with a buddy and traced each others' feet. Each of the children colored and decorated one foot, and then combined with the other children in other classes, we taped the footprints down the hall and marked off every 10 feet until we reached 100, so the children could see exactly how many 100 footprints are. The children really enjoyed this. We also made a class book: If I had $100.00 I would buy_. I xeroxed a $100.00 bill onto the classbook page, and each child wrote and drew what they would buy.
