Preventive Care:
Caring For Your Pet Bird
Advances in the domestic breeding and rearing of birds has led to an improved availability of healthy, tame, young birds. This increased availability has dramatically increased the popularity of birds as pets. For many people, the company of beautiful, unique, and possible talking pets can make keeping birds an attractive alternative to other pets. Selection
The personalities, housing, and dietary needs of the different types of birds must be considered by the prospective bird owner. To select a healthy bird, look for these characteristics:
  • Bright, smooth feathers
  • Full breast muscles
  • Clear, alert eyes
  • Playful activity
Shivering, ruffled feathers, shut eyes, and inactivity often mean a health problem. All new pet birds should be checked by your veterinarian, if possible, before the sale is final. Cages
The type and size of the cage should be carefully matched for each bird. If a cage is too small or the bars too widely spaced, the bird's wings may be injured or the pet may escape. The cage must be made of nontoxic materials that can withstand the abuse of heavy chewing. It also must be secured so that it is not easily knocked over. Food dishes
Within the cage, food and water cups must be anchored. Dishes also should be kept clean and free of any droppings.

Dog Cat Bird Rabbit ... Rat Bird The 411
Canary Scientific name: Serinus canarius
Size: Five to seven inches long
Color: Yellow, orange, red and white
Lifespan: Seven to ten years
Ever wonder where wild canaries live? These super singers come from the islands off the northwestern coast of Africathe Canary Islands, of course! Male canaries in particular will break into a chorus of cheerful melodies. Females like to chill out a little more, and may only peep or warble. Your canary will prefer a cage that's wider, rather than tallerthis'll give her room to fly and hop back and forth. Most canaries don't like to share the same cage, so it's best to keep just one. Some females can get along, but males will fight.
Cockatiel Scientific name: Nymphicus hollandicus
Size: Eleven to 14 inches long
Color: Yellow, white or gray with orange splotches
Lifespan: 12 to 15 years
These smart, active birds come from the land down underAustralia. Cockatiels love to climb on their cages and play with hanging toys. These movers and shakers prefer tall cages, so they can climb up to the highest perch. Female cockatiels are real sweeties, while their male counterparts are loud chirpers who can be taught to speak. (Be patient with your bird, though, as not all cockatiels are big talkers.) Both males and females love attention, so you should spend lots of time with them.

If you re positive that a parrot is the pet for you, research the pros, cons and care of the particular species before you bring a bird home.
http://www.animed.org/birds_parrots.htm
I. Birds: Parrots INDEX They squawk, they talk. They're smart and sensitive. They're beautiful and they'll be your best friend. We're talking about the larger members of the parrot family, considered by many to be the ultimate avian companions. This group includes a variety of species, from 12- to 20-inch African greys and electus parrots, to 20- to 36-inch umbrella cockatoos and scarlet macaws. Having a parrot as a pet is a major investment in time, money and lovebut if you're up for the challenge, the returns on your investment are priceless. Got your heart set on a bird who talks? Keep in mind that abilities vary among individuals, but in general, African greys, Amazons, electus and macaws are the best talkers. And if your bird isn't a talker, he'll still have a lot to say. Large parrots are very vocal and can be loud. If the screeching and squawking is music to your ears, that's greatbut you must consider the ears of your neighbors, particularly if you share walls with them.

http://www.animed.org/birds_toys_for_your_bird.htm
I. Birds: Toys for your Bird INDEX When it comes to companion avians, toys are serious fun. A favorite plaything can fulfill your feathered friend's need for mental stimulation, allow him to get in some exercise, and can also aid in maintaining proper beak and nail length. And, of course, there's the fun you'll have just sitting back and watching him hard at play. No matter what species your bird is, you'll have a lot to choose from at the pet supply store. Smaller birds like budgies will enjoy ladders, swings and mirrors with bells. There are jungle gym-style toys made especially for parrots who play out of the cage. The larger species also like rope toys, as well as rawhide chews and nylabones you'll find in the canine section of the store. Wooden chew toys are great for keeping beaks trimmed; they're also useful in redirecting the energies of birds who chew inappropriate items. But don't think you have to buy the most expensive toys out there. There are some simple, everyday household items your companion avian will find quite enchanting. Some budgies love nothing more than a ping pong ball to push around and try to stand on. An empty, open paper bag on the cage floor is an invitation to play, as are cardboard tubes and boxes. Food can be fun, too. Fresh corn on the cob is a rewarding challenge to eat, and dried cobs are even more enjoyable for ripping apart and shredding. A large, clean, untreated pine cone can also fulfill your bird's need for a safe, destructible plaything.

Birds As Pets: What You Should Know Their bright colors, beautiful songs, and cheerful personalities have made birds popular pets for hundreds of years. The Humane Society of the United States urges you to consider the following information before you bring a pet bird into your life. Hundreds of thousands of birds of many species are caught in the wild for the pet trade. Never buy wild-caught birds. Buying such birds means supporting an industry that causes great suffering and needless death and threatens the very survival of some bird species. Up to 80 percent of birds who are caught in the wild die just in the course of capture and shipment. After purchase wild-caught birds suffer from stress and the inability to adapt to life in captivity, making them prone to medical and behavioral problems.
Only birds bred in captivity should be kept as pets. Parakeets, cockatiels, and canaries are always cage-bred; finches, parrots, and toucans are often wild-caught. Find out where the birds you are interested in came from, so you can be sure that they were bred, kept, and sold humanely. If possible, visit the breeding facility. Remember that birds are frequently available from animal shelters and rescue groups. Each type of bird has unique needs that must be met. One simple rule is that the larger and less common the bird, the more difficult his care. Canaries are kept for their song, color, and activity; they do not usually offer humans a close bond. Canaries' small size and history of cage-breeding make them easier to manage. Likewise, parakeets (or budgies) and cockatiels are much easier to care for than are the larger parrots.

Executive Summary
Lack of demand for dog and cat food
Prepared and branded dog and cat food products are not popular in Vietnam and these products are purchased mainly by foreigners and very wealthy locals in the key cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Sales of dog and cat food are hampered by the perception and dominance of dogs and cats as working animals and also as a source of meat. Further inhibiting sales is the high price of dog and cat food. Indicative of the unpopularity is the demise of several dog and cat food importers/distributors. Not surprisingly, in 2003, sales of dog and cat food are expected to reach only VND4 billion, representing 14% of the total pet food and pet care products market.
Growth of dog and cat food hampered as more expatriates leave
2002 saw and 2003 is seeing some multinationals replacing their expatriate staff with local employees as a cost-cutting measure. This is also a natural progression as more locals are being trained to take on managerial and executive positions. However, as the expatriate community is a key component of demand for dog and cat food, value growth looks set to be slightly hampered in 2003 and fall behind volume growth. Although local consumers are becoming more affluent, and a select group is purchasing more prepared pet food, they are distinctly more price conscious than expatriates.

Executive Summary
Pets popular in Sweden
There are around 900,000 dogs and 1.4 million cats in Sweden, which has a population of nine million people; this makes the dog population below the European per capita average and the cat population over the European per capita average. The cat population and other pets, including birds and fish, saw the most dynamic growth over the review period as, with people’s lifestyles getting busier and people increasingly moving from rural to urban areas, these pets are easier to keep.
Stable growth in market where dog and cat food completely dominates
The increase in both the pet population and prepared food made volume sales increase during the review period, while, at the same time, value growth was driven by a shift towards premium products at the beginning of the review period and to new convenient packaging in 2002 and 2003. Value growth was however counteracted by decreasing prices through the supermarkets/hypermarkets channel, which increased its share of value sales during the review period. In total, the market looks set to increase by 1.9% in current value terms over 2002 to reach SEK4.3 billion in 2003.
Multinationals and domestic manufacturer Doggy dominate
Masterfoods, Nestlé and Doggy dominated value sales of dog and cat food in 2002, together accounting for over 60%of sector value sales. Masterfoods and Doggy increased their value shares in 2002. Nestle however did loose share slightly in 2002. Nevertheless the top three combined still gained share, mostly at the expense of small local producers, which are being pushed out of the market as retailers increasingly opt for stocking well-known brands. At the same time, retailers also tried to increase the shares held by their own brands, which made private label gain value share in Sweden in 2002.
