Many vets do not treat birds, so it is important to find a specialist in avian care. Sometimes the breeder or pet store where you purchased your bird will have

Bird Care Guide Are you thinking of getting a new bird as a pet? Each species is unique and wonderful in its own way but there are some general guidelines that apply to them all. Be sure the bird you choose is healthy. A sick bird is no bargain no matter what the price. By the time a bird shows any symptoms of disease, illness has usually become quite advanced. If a bird appears droopy, ruffled, tired or hides his head under his wing, this is not the bird for you. If he sneezes, sits on the bottom of the cage, has a discharge above his nostrils or droppings stuck to his tail feathers, there may be big problems. If he makes clicking sounds as he breathes or if his tail bobs, the bird may have serious respiratory disease and you should choose another individual. Signs of good health in a bird include bright eyes, clean shiny feathers, good appetite and lots of energy. Healthy birds eat often and are active. To help insure a healthy pet, obtain your bird from a reputable bird store or breeder. Take your new bird to an avian veterinarian for a "well bird check up" immediately. Good pet stores will allow you to return a sick bird. This insures that you get a healthy pet, and lets you meet an avian veterinarian in your area. It also helps the pet store or breeder maintain healthy birds.

Pet Training Made Easy
The Humane Society is concerned about the number of animals surrendered to shelters because of problem behaviors. Often owners are unaware of what to expect from their pets and don't know how to handle their challenging behaviors.
When we think of pets, we tend to conjure up warm and friendly images: new puppies cavorting together, kittens playing with a ball of twine, a parakeet sitting on its owner's finger singing sweet nothings into its owner's ear, a faithful Retriever at its master's side. It's this warm and fuzzy side of pet ownership, plus the unconditional companionship that pets provide, that helps forge the strong bond that often exists between people and their pets. Unfortunately, though, there's another side to pet ownership that we don't hear so much about; what happens when pets do not live up to our expectations of them and the bond between the owner and the pet weakens or completely breaks down.
Behavior problems are almost invariably the reason behind this rift. Some owners simply suffer the adversity and soldier on. Others would seek help but do not know where to find it. Yet another group surrenders their pet to the local shelter or pound on the off chance that it will be adopted. This solves their problem with the pet but not the pet's problem and no one learns from the experience. There is an old Swedish proverb that says, "Some people make the same mistake a thousand times and call it experience." That certainly applies here, as some of the same owners simply obtain another pet and repeat the cycle of ignorance.

Pet Care Information
Winter Pet Care Tips During the chilling beauty of winter, please take a moment to consider the safety and comfort of your pet. Here are a few ideas that may help your outdoor pet survive the winter season:
  • Provide shelter for both cats and dogs. A good shelter should: Not be too big for the pet; Have a fairly small opening that can be covered by a piece of rug or soft plastic to keep the wind out; Have the opening facing away from the wind; and Be filled with straw (not hay) that is changed regularly.
Provide proper food and water for the pet: A higher calorie, brand-name/premium food is recommended, as pets burn many more calories trying to stay warm; Fresh water must be available to prevent dehydration. Eating snow will lower the pet’s body temperature. Lukewarm water should be provided at least twice a day, and checked to make sure it has not frozen over. Electric water bowls and other devices can be purchased at pet stores, that will keep your pet’s water from freezing.
Be sure your pet is in good physical condition: Make sure your pet is free from matted hair. Mats hold water and lower body temperature.

We all want our beloved birds to be happy and healthy. This means paying the vet hundreds of dollars for exams, right? No! Ask any vet the care your bird gets at home has far more effect on his health than any vet exam. In fact, most vets give out advice along with prescriptions advice that could have prevented the illness in the first place! Wouldn't you like to have that advice now, before you have to hear it from your vet? Inappropriate diet and nutrition can cause serious, and even fatal, health problems in birds. Did you know a diet of nuts, seeds, and fruit is not good for a bird? Understanding your bird's diet needs is easy, will keep him healthier and happier, and can prevent expensive treatments in the future. Note: we are not saying you will never have to visit the vet again! Vet care is important to your pet's health. However, with the care techniques in this book, you can prevent a multitude of costly illnesses with just a little knowledge! Our "Bird Care"
