DEFINITION
The word raptor is derived from "rapere", a Latin word, which means to seize or capture. More specifically, a raptor is a bird of prey. A bird of prey is a carnivore (meat eater) that kills and eats mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, rodents, and other birds. Many birds hunt, kill, and eat meat, but they may not be a raptor. There are three distinguishing traits that make raptors different from other birds:
  • hooked beaks with sharp edges feet with sharp, curved claws or talons keen eyesight
ORDERS AND GROUPS Raptors belong to two scientific orders, the Strigiformes and Falconiformes. The orders are divided into six groups with a total of about 446 species worldwide. They include:
  • secretary bird (1 specie in Africa) falcons (63 species) osprey (1 specie) hawks and eagles (226 species) vultures (7 species) owls (148 species)
HUNTERS BY DAY OR BY NIGHT
Raptors also fit into two basic groupings as hunters, they are either diurnal or nocturnal hunters.

BATS
Bats are among the most successful mammals:
there are more bats than any other mammal except rodents. But bats probably outnumber even rodents if we counted each individual.
The 900 or so species of bats make up 20% or nearly one-quarter of all living mammal species! In the tropics, there are often more bats than all other kinds of mammals combined. There are about 80 bat species in Southeast Asia. Classification: Bats are from the order Chiroptera which means "hand wing" in Greek. There are two main suborders of bats:
Megachiroptera or Megabats:
Also known as Flying Foxes (only because they look fox-like; they are NOT foxes!). Found only in the Old World, Megabats eat a narrower range of food (fruits, nectar). They don't rely on echolocation as much to navigate (though some echolocate with tongue clicks). Instead, they have excellent eyesight and smell senses. There is only 1 family of Megabats
Microchiroptera or Microbats: The rest of 16 families are Microbats. Microbats eat a wide range of food: most are carnivores, mostly insects, but they include fruit eaters, and bizarre specialists like the infamous Vampire Bat. All Microbats use sophisticated echolocation rather than vision to navigate and catch their food. So a Microbat usually has small eyes, and weird fleshy growths on its nose to send out ultrasonic pulses and oversized ears to receive the echoes. Microbats are more widely distributed and have a wider range of forms than any other mammal order.

Birds of prey have a hooked beak for
cutting and tearing meat. Many raptors
will either catch live prey or scavenge for
carrion. Some species favor only live
prey, while others prefer dead prey, and
a very few raptors will even supplement
their diet with fruit and other plant material. WING SHAPE Flight patterns are determined in part by wing shape. For example, raptors with long, broad wings can easily glide across fields or soar on updrafts. Raptors with short, broad wings are quick and maneuverable. Other wing shapes are more suited for spectacular high-speed dives or hovering just above the ground. DIGESTION All raptors, except owls, have a crop that

The South Florida Renaissance Festival was in the last of its 5 weekends. Many of the vendors and others had actually camped out at the Park in Broward called Quiet Waters. Just after passing through the entrance, I lost my friends and appeared to have been transported to another place and time. I had seen some strange creatures, listened to the most amazing concert in bells, and everyone was wearing the garb of the Renaissance and talking in strange accents. The bell concert had just finished when I heard the scream of birds.
I looked skyward to see two crows flying above a hawk. The crows were safe and brave while above. Below the hawk was the killing zone of its talons and beak. The hawk kept circling, seemingly oblivious to the black bird's crackling and screams. All at once, the hawk threw back its wings and fell from the sky like it was a stone. Below a mouse, or squirrel, or maybe even a rabbit was probably in trouble.

This book was originally published (1978) as Veterinary Aspects Of Captive Birds Of Prey. The second edition (1985) had the title changed to the current one. Changes in this edition include contributions by leading international experts (Paolo Zucca, Oliver Krone, David Peakall, and Ian Newton, among others). Chapters on fractures, pediatrics, and poisons have been added. Also included are new sections on health monitoring, captive breeding, and host-parasite relations. There is an interesting section on foot conditions, a major issue in captive birds of prey, with up-to-date information on prevention and treatment. The chapter on investigation and treatment (working up a case) is excellent. Reference charts and tables are numerous and informative. Numerous appendices, such as clinical, postmortem, and egg-embryo examinations forms; keys to diagnosis; medications; field work; equipment and techniques; and legal issues are included. An eight-page color plate is included. The radiographs are very good quality and their captions enhance visual identification of points in the text. This book will be useful to both the avian neophyte and the experienced practitioner. John Cooper has worked with the British Small Animal Veterinary Association in developing a series of manuals on birds, exotics and small mammals. His experience has paid off in this excellent volume.

The Avian Reconditioning Center... a specialized wildlife facility where large outdoor enclosures will allow for physical reconditioning and natural weatherproofing of recuperating birds of prey, also known as raptors. In many cases this "physical therapy" is necessary to provide the birds with a more realistic chance of survival once released to the wild. Using traditional falconry techniques, The Avian Reconditioning Center (ARC) will also prepare and pre-release train young orphaned and/or injured raptors to hunt, thereby greatly increasing the odds of their survival in their natural habitat. Poised at the top of the food chain, raptors are a valuable indicator of the health of our planet. Dedicated to educating the public about the importance of birds of prey, ARC encourages compassion for injured and recovering raptors and provides informative programs featuring live hawks, falcons, kites and owls for audiences of all ages in the Central Florida area. Inquiries about ARC's programs to increase awareness about Florida's exceptional wildlife and the vital need for habitat protection should be directed to Carol at 407-461-1056.
