If you have a passion for birds of prey, Raptors of Eden, is the place to visit. Come and experience these magnificent creatures in free flight. Raptors of Eden is a sanctuary for birds of prey that can no longer survive in the wild. It is not a rehabilitation centre but rather a safe haven for retirement.
This centre, the only one on the Garden Route, situated next to Monkey Land, was officially opened on the 13th of October 2002 and I thought it would be difficult to source birds from various rehabilitation centres but was shocked at how many of them are in need of a good home. As they are very specialized, special care and knowledge are essential in the daily care of birds of prey. At a weight of only 60 grams the Pygmy falcon are our smallest bird of prey in South Africa and weighing in at up to 5.5 kg the Black Eagle the largest.

Large birds of prey have always been persecuted and have only found refuge in the most inaccessible parts of mountain ranges, often at very high altitudes. Although protected for the past twenty years or so, they show no inclination to recolonize the lower altitudes and plains. Human activity leaves them only a marginal role in a sanitized countryside dedicated to intensive farming practices.
The Pyrenees were the last refuge in the whole of France for certain species, while offering shelter to birds of prey known in other mountains. It is this wealth of wildlife that the various nature reserves throughout the range -from the national park in the west to eastern reserves- all aim to conserve. In the 1970s, just before birds of prey were placed under legal protection, the situation was critical. Today, most small and medium bird of prey populations have risen to an acceptable level. The larger birds of prey are more sensitive to disturbances of all kinds. The time taken before reaching sexual maturity, the few young born per couple (often one over a two-year period), the long breeding period (one year) and the numerous failures all serve to slow down reproduction and hinder the renewal of generations.
We should always keep one eye on the sky in the hopes of seeing a fleeting silhouette or even the soaring flight of one of these large birds of prey in their own domain.

Birds of Prey, "Premiere"
Gotham Girls. By Diana Estigarribia
October 10, 2002
Birds of Prey pick up where Batman left off, and it's one step forward for girl power and two steps backward for genre TV. While there's enough to keep you watching, the show doesn't quite resonate yet. This is mostly due to a really dumb plot and some bad acting, plus those annoying WB CD tie-ins (no, we did not need to hear Michelle Branch as the credits rolled). The episode begins with a melodramatic pan-origin recap of the three women, narrated by Alfred the butler. In short order and very broad strokes, we're given the rundown: The Bat and the Cat's confrontation, the Joker's bad, bad ways, and his revenge on Batman. He takes out Barbara Gordon (Dina Meyer), and Selena Kyle is stabbed, as her daughter Helena (Ashley Scott) cradles her mother's dying body. This is one messed up girl, which is confirmed as we later observe her in therapy with her shrink, who happens to be the obvious choice for female uber-villain, Dr. Harleen Quinzel (Mia Sara). Meanwhile, far away, young girl Dinah (Rachel Skarsten) telepathically experiences the pain of both superheroes. Her power to see and feel the experiences of others will eventually lead her to New Gotham and Oracle and the Huntress. They'll reluctantly let Dinah join forces with them.

Birds of Prey, "Prey for the Hunter"
Mulder Jr. as a metahuman. By Diana Estigarribia
October 24, 2002
"Prey for the Hunter" focuses on a killer loose in New Gotham who's targeting metahumans. Helena is pissed that this dude is knocking off su gente so she takes it personal. Meanwhile, Dinah starts high school and finds she doesn't fit in. (Aww, I hate it when that happens to a good kid). This episode has a few good things going for it: an expansion of the whole "metahumans" underground in New Gotham, the focus on Reese (always a good thing), and a guest villain who isn't half-bad. This is not to say, however, that the story is as good as it can be. First of all, New Gotham is apparently crawling with metahumans. They're everywhere, in all walks of life, from your local building janitor to the police force. This calls to mind an X-Men kind of scenario, especially since most of the metahumans we've met so far are young people. Not only are they young, but they have their own hangout: the No-Man's Land Collectables (does anyone know how to spell in New Gotham?) store, which is actually a front for a secret bar where metahumans can have a drink in peace, hang out, and play pool.

BACK TRANSCRIPT
INTRODUCTION
I'm Marty Stouffer. Some of the most impressive animals on earth are birds of prey. Their piercing eyes, sharp beaks, and strong talons are part of an image of noble power that has inspired man through the ages.
These aerial hunters come in all sizes, and they populate nearly every habitat. Each one specifically designed for particular prey.
With no predators except man, the Hawks, Kites, Falcons and Eagles are aristocrats of the air: the spectacular "BIRDS OF PREY."
TRANSITION TO TITLE/WINTER/GOSHAWK
Most birds of prey migrate to warmer climates during the severe winter months. A few, like the Goshawk, are able to remain behind and still survive.
Built strictly for the kill, an adult Goshawk spies a Red Squirrel, an important source of food at this time of year. With unnerving composure, it uses one of its most valuable hunting assets, its patience.
The Goshawk relies on short wings and a long tail to maneuver around tree trunks and between branches. These two creatures play out their lives like a game of chess. This time its the squirrel which makes the wrong move. It is forced into check by the Goshawk, and must pay with its life.
But who knows? Maybe next time it will be check-mate for the Goshawk. Many birds of prey starve in our wintry forests each year.

Somewhere
Black Canary opened her eyes and found herself in darkness. Primal fears seized her imagination for a brief moment before her shaken nerves were tamed by years of discipline. Judging by the angry growl of her stomach she had been unconscious for at least a day. Her ankle still hurt, but she was surprised to find it set and bandaged. Much of her clothing had been torn away, but she was sore in the wrong places to have been violated. She tried to peer through the darkness, even as the unmistakable stench of urine assaulted her nostrils. She could see nothing. Cool, damp air directed a concerto of chill bumps to a crescendo on her bare arms. Where was she?
"Hello?" Canary's voice hung in the thick, fetid air like a dying man on the gallows. Satisfied she would receive no answer, she kneaded her temples slowly, massaging at the pounding ache within her skull. Her senses settled, she hobbled to her feet despite the pain in her foot. If there was a way out of this hell hole she would find it. Inching to her left, she discovered a plank wall and felt her way around the room. On one side of the tiny room she discovered a large, wooden box that spanned its width. It rose from the floor to a height of roughly three feet. She continued to feel her way around the room and found a door. She pushed against it, but it wouldn't open. Curiously, a pull handle was attached to it. A small room with a large box and a door that pulled shut? Why this was nothing but a.... Canary wrinkled her nose in disgust. She was in an outhouse.

These attributes apply to vultures, eagles and hawks, as well as other species known as birds of prey, or raptors. Through the 1960s, human activities took a tragic toll. The birds' nests were destroyed, the hatchlings were killed, adult birds hunted down an apparent attempt to exterminate them. According to the World Wildlife Fund , "Raptors have existed for 75 million years and today there are over 450 species including eagles, hawks, falcons, vultures, buzzards, ospreys, harriers, kites and owls. They live in most habitats in virtually all areas of the world." The website of the World Center for Birds of Prey tells the story of the "triumphant return" to Panama of "Ancon", a harpy eagle that the Central American country loaned to the U.S.-based Peregrine Fund.

This book could use a fresh perspective, as while Chuck Dixon still delivers some engaging banter between the two leads, the action that he's offering up is beginning to feel like we've danced this dance before. We have the threat emerge to endanger Dinah, who in turn does her best to stay alive until Oracle can come up with the weakness will render the threat harmless. I will credit Chuck Dixon for his ability to deliver engaging action, as even though the outcome was never really in doubt, Dinah's struggle is fairly exciting. However, this issue is going to feel rather familiar to anyone whose been following Chuck Dixon's work for more than a year.

What makes a Bird a Bird? What Makes A Bird A Raptor? Types of Raptors Birds of Prey Facts ... Test Your Knowledge
    DEFINITION
The word raptor is derived from "rapere", a Latin word, which means to seize or capture. More specifically, a raptor is a bird of prey. A bird of prey is a carnivore (meat eater) that kills and eats mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, rodents, and other birds. Many birds hunt, kill, and eat meat, but they may not be a raptor. There are three distinguishing traits that make raptors different from other birds:
    • hooked beaks with sharp edges feet with sharp, curved claws or talons keen eyesight
ORDERS AND GROUPS Raptors belong to two scientific orders, the Strigiformes and Falconiformes. The orders are divided into six groups with a total of about 446 species worldwide. They include:
    • secretary bird (1 specie in Africa) falcons (63 species) osprey (1 specie) hawks and eagles (226 species) vultures (7 species) owls (148 species)
HUNTERS BY DAY OR BY NIGHT
Raptors also fit into two basic groupings as hunters, they are either diurnal or nocturnal hunters.
