Hours: 10-4 Tuesday- Sunday Audubon Center for Birds of Prey is an urban environmental nature center that specializes in the rescue, medical care, rehabilitation and release of sick, injured and orphaned raptors (birds of prey). More than 40 percent of over 700 annual patients are returned to the wild. Some 20 different species of raptors, which cannot be returned to the wild due to injuries, are used in our conservation education programs. Audubon Center for Birds of Prey is a non-profit organization and relies on visitor admissions, donations and adoptions to support its work. Through action-based education about the environment, citizens will be empowered to preserve what remains of natural Florida as well as saving the birds themselves, which has been Audubon's focus since its beginning in the 1900's.
Over twenty years ago, the arrival of an injured Red-tailed Hawk at the Audubon Society state headquarters, then in Maitland, marked the beginning of an ambitious effort to preserve birds of prey that has changed Florida's skies forever!

Snake River Birds of Prey Planning Area
Public Involvement A responsive public involvement program is key to the success of the Snake River Birds of Prey Planning Area RMP. In an effort to determine how best to create a public involvement process that will allow the public the opportunity to participate in the preparation and analysis of the RMP/EIS, the BLM LSRD contracted with the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution to assess prospects for collaboration and broad public participation in the preparation of the RMP. The Executive Summary of this Assessment is available or you can view the entire Assessment Report . The Assessment is one tool used to develop a public involvement program that provides the public with the opportunity to participate throughout the development of the RMP. It is our expectation that through direct participation and input we will form lasting partnerships in the management of public lands in southwestern Idaho. We have included a diagram outlining the collaborative process through the end of the calendar year. In addition, a Calendar of Events and Preparation Schedule provides key dates and general schedule information. The calendar will be updated as meetings and events are added.

    One of the articles that I have always wanted to write is on general bird safety. I finally decided that now was the time a few days ago as I was driving down Pacific Coast Highway near my home. Just for the record, this particular stretch of PCH is near Santa Monica, California where there are huge public beaches, the pier and lots of homes. In other words, we're talking three lanes in either direction and moving fast. I was buzzing along in the fast lane doing about 45 when I see some guy getting out of a car parked on the curb. He is getting out on the driver's (traffic) side, WITH A HYACINTH MACAW ON HIS ARM. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. There, I feel better now. I was feeling angry all over again and thought it best to let it pass. Anyway, why don't we start with some basic rules about taking your bird out of the home. These are important because every bird has to leave the house every now and then. Whether it is a trip to the vet, out for some fresh air or just a little socializing, these things need to be done safely.

      a. Small Accipiter hawks, falcons, and harriers usually start to breed at one to two years. b. Buteo hawks, kites, and large falcons breed at two or three years. Ospreys begin breeding at three or more years. c. Large eagles usually start to breed at four to nine years, and vultures up to 12 years.
    2. First-time breeding may be delayed if competition for food is high or territories are unavailable. B. Reproductive behavior. 1. Most diurnal birds of prey are monogamous. Some birds keep the same mate for several years, such as ospreys, while others have different mates each year, such as snail kites. In some groups of Harris' hawks, monogamous breeding pairs are assisted by a number of nonbreeding helpers, mostly previous offspring. 2. A few species are polygynous or polyandrous.
      a. Polygyny is when a male mates with more than one female at a time. Many harriers are polygynous. b. Polyandry is when a female mates with more than one male at a time. Polyandry has been observed in populations of Harris' hawks and Galapagos hawks

    Anatomy and Physiology
    A. Skeletal system. 1. The skeleton gives a bird protection, support, and movement. It's also a site for calcium storage and the production of red blood cells. 2. A bird's skeleton is made of bone. Many of the bones are fused or modified for greater strength and rigidity in walking, jumping, running, perching, and especially flying.
      a. The sternum, or breastbone, is more developed than in other vertebrates. It has a large flattened plate, called a keel, for the attachment of flight muscles. b. The wing attaches to the body via a sturdy pectoral girdle. In birds the pectoral girdle is made of three bones, rather than two as in humans. The furcula or "wish bone" is part of the pectoral girdle. c. The wrist bones of the wing are fused and elongated and only three finger bones (digits) remain. d. The pelvis is long and has a forward opening to facilitate egg laying. e. The thigh bones are generally shortened and sturdy. The foot and ankle bones are fused and elongated. f. The thigh is held close to the body and covered by feathers. The visible backward bending leg joint corresponds to the ankle joint in humans. Birds stand on their toes.
