Big Bend National Park is a diverse area containing over 1,200 species of plants, 11 species of amphibians, 56 species of reptiles, 40 species of fish, 76 species of mammals, 450 species of birds and about 3,600 species of insects. The park boasts more types of birds, bats, and cacti than any other national park in the United States. Within Big Bend National Park, seven species are officially considered federally threatened or endangered. The Big Bend mosquito fish, Gambusia gaigei , is an endemic species. The only place in the world it is found is a few ponds near the Rio Grande Village. This tiny endangered fish is at risk from exotic species competition and diminishing habitat. Although never abundant, the Big Bend gambusia population is now considered stable. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service moved some of the Gambusia gaigei to a fish hatchery in Dexter, New Mexico, in the event that something should happen to the population in Big Bend National Park and a source to restock the park became necessary. Two endangered birds are found in Big Bend. Both are considered stable populations. The black-capped vireo

    Endangered and Threatened Species
What Are Endangered and Threatened Species?
A century ago, a bird called the passenger pigeon lived in North America. There were so many passenger pigeons that people often saw great flocks of them flying overhead containing thousands, even millions, of birds. Today, there is not a single one left. What happened?
The passenger pigeon became extinct . All living passenger pigeons disappeared from the earth entirely. The passenger pigeon became extinct for two reasons. First, the forests where it lived were cut down to make way for farms and cities. Second, many pigeons were shot for sport and because they were good to eat. At that time, there were no hunting laws to protect endangered species like there are now.
The passenger pigeon is one of the many plants and animals that once lived on our planet and have become extinct. For example, dinosaurs, mammoths, and saber-toothed tigers all became extinct long ago. More recently, the dodo bird and the sea mink also have disappeared. Extinction has been going on since life began on earth. But today, extinction is happening faster than ever before.

The peregrine falcon population has dropped dramatically worldwide since the 1940's. Why
    the decline ?
There are a number of reasons.
Absorbing DDT which their prey had ingested -causing the production of eggs with thin shells.
Less and less prey because of declining habitats.
Wrongly thinking that falcons kill their poultry or were competing with them, farmers and hunters shoot them during migration.
Illegal taking of young by would-be falconers.
More information from the Peregrine Fund See also Extinct Birds The California gnatcatcher is a year-round resident which primarily inhabits coastal sage scrub.Population declines were due to urban and agricultural development. It was listed as Federally Threatened in 1993 and is a State Species of Special Concern. The species was driving force for the development of the Natural Communities Conservation Program (NCCP) in southern California. There is a dense population known in scrub surrounding Sweetwater Reservoir and limited occurrence around Loveland Reservoir. Recently, US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed "critical habitat" for the species. "Critical habitat" is defined as the specific area occupied by a species that contain physical or biological features essential to the conservation of the species and that may require special management considerations or protection.
