Migratory Birds and Spread of West Nile Virus in the Western Hemisphere
John H. Rappole,* Scott R. Derrickson,* and Zdenek Hubálek†
*Conservation and Research Center, National Zoological Park, Smithsonian Institution, Front Royal, Virginia, USA; and †Institute of Vertebrate Biology, Academy of Sciences, Valtice, Czech Republic The first known human case of West Nile virus infection recorded in the Western Hemisphere was reported in August 1999 ( ). Eventually, 62 cases of the disease were confirmed; no new cases have been reported since October 16, 1999 ( ). Of the human cases laboratory-confirmed as of October 8, 1999, 70% occurred within a circle 10 km in radius centered in the northern end of the New York City borough of Queens ( ). Coincident in both space and time with the human outbreak was a substantial die-off of birds, particularly American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) ). Unusual bird deaths were noted around the Bronx Zoo in mid-August ( ), approximately 8 km north of the epicenter of the human epidemic. Several thousand crows and other avian species are presumed to have died of the virus, mostly in and around the New York City area (

can be beneficial to you and your garden!
Benefits

Wild birds are extremely beneficial to a yard and to those who enjoy the great outdoors. They eat large quantities of bugs and are one of the best natural means of keeping detrimental insects under control year-round.
Birds also add liveliness and music to gardens in all seasons and children can acquire an early interest in nature by watching them flock to a backyard feeder. Wild bird feeding makes us feel good especially in cold weather, when easy meals at a backyard bird feeder may make the difference between life and death.
Types of Feeders
Tube Feeders
are easy to fill and hang and they hold quite a bit of seed.
Platform Feeders are generally constructed of wood. They tend to waste significant amounts of seed due to theft by squirrels and other predators. However, they are excellent for attracting birds that do not readily visit perched feeders.
House or Hopper-type Feeders may be constructed of wood, plastic or glass. Bigger models hold large quantities of seed and allow several birds to perch at once.
Window Feeders are usually plastic and contain a suction cup for easy mounting to windows. Birds have a tendency to crash into windows if they are too clear, so care must be taken! These feeders don't hold a lot of seed, but they will bring much watching enjoyment.

A guide to feeding wild birds
Location
Find a suitable place for your feeding station. Ensure clear visibility and flight paths for the birds - and a good view for yourself if you can!
Water
Try to provide water for both drinking and bathing. Keep it fresh and ice-free in winter.
Variety
The more variety you can offer, the better it is for your garden birds. Try a good combination of table foodstuffs (seeds, fruit, kitchen scraps, feeder foods), nuts (in mesh containers only) and seeds. There are specially formulated feeder seeds suited only to the birds that will use a polycarbon feeder.
Hygiene
Keep your table clean. Ensure feeders have good drainage. Damp seed will quickly go mouldy and be a threat to the health of your garden birds. Watch the condition of your foodstuffs and store them somewhere cool and dry.
Aflatoxins
These are tasteless, odourless and colourless toxins produced by the Aspergillus flavus fungus, developing on peanuts in conditions of high temperature and humidity. Toxins are absorbed directly into the body fat and, because birds do not carry much fat, they are particularly susceptible. Large numbers of garden birds are believed to be dying as a result. Many peanuts are tested at their point of origin but since much of the contamination can occur in transit, any certificates are virtually worthless. If you cannot be sure the peanuts you buy are safe, don't buy them.

Nebline Newsletter Article Water for the Birds
This article was submitted by Mary Jane Frogge, Extension Associate, University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension in Lancaster County. The article appeared in the Nebline Newsletter. Date: April 1995 When people are thirsty they can seek something to drink from the nearest water faucet or refrigerator. Birds do not have that luxury. They must rely on nature or people to provide water for them. Bird baths come in a variety of sizes, shapes and prices. They range from the very ornate to a simple garbage can lid. They may be purchased at most lawn and garden stores or be made at home with a variety of materials. Terra-cotta saucers used under large plants make excellent bird baths. A garbage can lid with a few stones placed inside also can be used. Whether you decide to purchase your bird bath or make it from items found at home, follow these guidelines for success. Depth: Bird baths should be no deeper than 3 inches at the deepest point and should have sloping sides down to this point. An edge along the top will provide a place for birds to perch while taking a drink.
