NEW: What was the male doing on his wintering area?
NEW: The female's travels through Panama CRC migration page CRC home page Date: 25 March 2001 - We will not update this map again. Click to see current map Locations for both birds again and sadly the last time we'll include the female. The location for the female is the last good signal we had from her, on 18 Nov., on the Santa Maria River, north of Santiago, Panama (some 2,400 miles from her nest). While we continue to receive sporadic signals from her transmitter, they tell us that she is not moving, so we presume she is dead. Optimistically, but unrealistically, she may have lost the transmitter and show up on the nest "unplugged," but we do not expect this. Average annual mortality in adult Ospreys is about 15%, so we expect to lose some birds every year.
The male has finally left the delta of the Orinoco River in Venezuela, where he has been since early November and is heading north.

... a world-class birding location
More than 300 species of birds have been recorded at Prince Edward Point,
a major staging area for migratory birds.
Welcome to the Prince Edward County Birding Festival (May) as we ring in the spring with a dawn chorus of warblers, vireos, flycatchers and thrushes. Prince Edward County's location in eastern Ontario has resulted in 337 species of birds being recorded. Prince Edward County is a world class birding location, boasting the highest concentration and abundance of migratory birds anywhere on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario . The Canadian Nature Federation and Bird Studies Canada have recently designated Prince Edward Point as a Globally Important Birding Area (IBA) in 1998. Because of its location in eastern Lake Ontario, Prince Edward County is a natural catch-all for migrating birds during both spring and fall. The points of land along the southern shore especially, provide excellent birding opportunities during the spring migration. Point Petre, Salmon Point, West Point (Sandbanks Provincial Park), and Huyck's Point have all been identified as important focal points to view migrating birds. Of all the points of land sprinkled along the south shore of the county, Prince Edward Point, located at the extreme southeastern end of the Long Point Peninsula in South Marysburgh Township, has been identified as the most important. Because of its importance, Prince Edward Point was set aside as a National Wildlife Area by the Canadian Wildlife Service in 1978.

Outsmarting Birds
Bird control methods that work
by Michael E. Trunko
Winged invaders swoop down from the sky, descend upon your newly planted vegetable garden and consume seeds and seedlings alike. A few months later, your trees and bushes are full of fruit. Just before you can harvest, however, your branches and vines are picked clean. If you've ever suffered similar misfortunes, you're not alone. Although bird problems vary from year to year, region to region, and crop to crop, gardeners can expect damage to some extent from minor annoyances to total devastation every season. "It's just a fact of life," laments Mona Zemsky of Bird-X, Inc., a manufacturer of bird-control devices in Chicago, "that if you grow certain crops, you're going to have a bird problem. Irrigated plots in the deserts of the Southwest are just as susceptible as gardens in the Midwest or New England." An effective bird-control strategy involves more than sticking a scarecrow in your garden and forgetting about it (although in rare instances, this may work). Usually, the secret lies not only in the product or procedure but in your efforts and commitment as well. Also, the first strategy you attempt may not prove successful. But if you correctly use the appropriate products and procedures, you will enjoy damage-free harvests.
