Welcome!
Birds, birding, wildlife, the environment, and our community are the concerns of El Paso Audubon. Officially known as the El Paso/Trans Pecos Audubon Society, this is one of the largest and most active environmental groups in the American Southwest.
El Paso's Home for Birders
Whether you are a member or not, or a visitor to our community, you will find plenty of information about birding in the El Paso, Texas area. Browse through our site and enjoy!
Calendar
The 2004 El Paso Trans-Pecos Audubon Society Birdathon will take place on May 1 - 2. As always we invite members and friends to donate a tax deductible gift to support Audubon's mission of conservation education and wildlife habitat improvement. Birdathon is the main source for funding in support of our Audubon Adventures youth program and our conservation and education endeavors such as Feather Lake. In addition, this year funds raised during Birdathon will help to build the endowment for the Franklin Mountains State Park. Finally, Birdathon helps to ensure that the NAS office based in Texas remains an effective, respective voice for Texas environment.
Special Birding Sites
John Kiseda has developed birding checklists for the Wyler Tramway and the Keystone Heritage Site. Now he has developed one for the Crossroads Pond. However, he could still use help in documenting the birds that come to these areas. Contact John at the El Paso Zoo ((15-521-1850) to see how you can help to build the checklists.

BIRDING IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS
By Jon Hornbuckle
In June 1999, after four weeks in the Bismarck Archipelago off Papua New Guinea, during which we had been relieved of most of our possessions by some of the friendly islanders of Mussau (see Phil Gregory’s article in Australian Birding vol.5 no.4 pp. 11-15), Neil Bostock, Barry Wright, Keith Turner and I were ready to move east to the Solomon Islands. This group of mountainous islands, stretching some 1000km east to west, is one of the least visited regions in the Pacific, and holds a high number of restricted range and threatened species. We flew from Port Moresby, PNG, to Honiara on the main Solomon island of Guadalcanal. We were soon observing endemic parrots and flycatchers on nearby Mount Austen but were alarmed to hear there was trouble in the hills, with Guadalcanalese killing Malaitan settlers who were of course retaliating. This meant it would be unsafe to go into the mountains to look for the five montane endemics, including gems such as Moustached Kingfisher and Guadalcanal Thrush, unless things improved, which they did not. Everywhere else was peaceful and so over the next four weeks we were able to visit five of the major islands and four smaller islands in the western New Georgia group. We saw all 66 possible endemics and near-endemics on those islands except Fearful Owl, Malaita Fantail and Woodford’s Rail (excluding the probably extinct San Cristobal Moorhen and Thick-billed Ground-Dove). Everything went to plan except on Isabel where the boat we hired to take us to the Woodford’s Rail site capsized, thereby destroying my new camera and causing some other loss and damage. Nevertheless, I can still strongly recommend birding in the Solomons as highly rewarding, with many attractive and little-known birds to be found in a mostly safe and friendly environment.

Pine To Prairie Birding Trail
Minnesota's First Birding Trail!
NEW - Maps of all 43 sites W elcome to Northwestern Minnesota where a unique collection of habitats provide homes for a tremendous variety of birds. Pine forests, deciduous woodlands, native tallgrass prairie, aspen parkland, sand dunes (remnants of Glacial Lake Agassiz), calcareous fens, bogs, marshes, large and small lakes and rivers make up the transition zone that offers over 275 species of birds. Most of the sites are on public land or private reserves open to the public. There are not facilities at all sites. Some of the unique "lifers" you can see here include the Northern Goshawk, Ruffed Grouse, Greater Prairie-Chicken, Yellow Rail, American Woodcock, Snowy Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Great Gray Owl, Three-toed and Black-backed Woodpeckers, Boreal Chickadee, Bay-breasted, Connecticut and Mourning Warblers, Red and White-winged Crossbills and Pine and Evening Grosbeaks. This Web site will help you get started. It provides a reference for beginning to advanced birders. The trail is over 200 miles in length with 43 sites to view birds. The sites offer some of the most spectacular wild places that Minnesota has to offer. Although spring, summer and fall offer an abundance of birds, winter is also an exciting time to see winter specialties.

W elcome to our website. We are Helen Heyes and Martin Tribe and live in East Sussex in the UK. In our website you can find out what we saw in various places we've been birding in the last ten years or so. Once the internet became available we were always searching for sites that listed the birds we might see at a certain place. Not just the rarities and specialities - the common stuff too - otherwise, how would we know what we're likely to see and what we should know how to recognize? So, this is what we've tried to create. The bird names appearing in green were lifers for one or both of us. If you're planning a trip to any of these locations we hope some of the information contained in these pages will be of some use. We are always happy to receive e-mails from other birders, and are happy to know that our site has been of use to various people who are intending to visit some of the places we've been to. During the past few years we've had the pleasure of visiting North America a few times and have fallen in love with North American birding. For some reason the birds are easier to see than in the UK, especially families like woodpeckers. If you're interested here's our ABA list and the species lists for all the US states and Canadian provinces we've been to.

You will need RealPlayer 3 or above to listen to the song clips in this tune-up. For the free verion, look for the "RealPlayer Basic" link. If you are like me, your birdsong identification skills often need a few repairs after the long winter. Synapses dissolve, things come unwired - who knows what goes on up there, but a tune-up is definitely in order. Others of you may be venturing into the world of birdsong for the first time. You're sick and tired of that birding buddy who identifies every peep in the bush before you've even raised your binoculars. This is the year you get your revenge. Whatever the motivation, this virtual field trip is designed to get you up and running in the birdsong identification department. It provides an overview of learning and recalling birdsong as well as some examples to put your learning into (or back into) practice. But remember, time in the field will ultimately determine the level of skill you will achieve. To use bird vocalizations effectively as a means of identification (and that's what this is all about) you need some basic methods of representing the songs and calls. One familiar means is

Welcome I took these pictures in 2002. Several people have asked to see them. I love Detroit. It is easily one of the coolest cities in the country. But there is something unique about Detroit: A number of circumstances have come together to make it one of the most rundown cities in America. "White flight" in the 50's and 60's, the Japanese auto invasion in the 70's, downsizing and outsourcing in the 80's and 90's. In fact, I can't seem to remember a time when Detroit was really 'doing well'. This has led to the signature of Detroit's landscape: the abandoned building There are two great websites that inspired me.

Bel Mar Park, including Kountze Lake (Lakewood) There is always something good here - It's one of the best spots I've found for ducks in the winter: Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Goldeneye, (I've seen both Common and Barrow's), Wood Ducks, Ruddy Ducks, Wigeon, Canada Geese, and Mallards are common, along with the ubiquitious circle of Northern Shovelers. In spring and summer American Coots and Pied-billed Grebes nest in the marshy areas, as Black-crowned Nightherons, Great Blue Herons, and the occasional Green Heron stalk their prey. Several species of swallows spend the warm months here, as well as many warbler species and millions of Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles, (okay not really millions - it just sounds like it!) The Park is located at about Ohio Ave. and South Wadsworth in Lakewood.
Prospect Park (Wheat Ridge) Prospect Park is notable not only for birds but for the resident foxes, (whom some people foolishly feed...!). Warblers are common here throughout the spring and summer, especially during migration. Waterfowl I have seen here include: Greater and Lesser Scaup, Goldeneye, Canvasback, Bufflehead, and Ruddy Ducks.
