    Mission Statement
To increase appreciation, understanding and conservation of birds along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail through education, recreation, nature tourism and conservation fundraising. Each year, during Texas' amazing spring migration, Texas Parks and Wildlife and Texas Partners in Flight sponsor the Great Texas Birding Classic. During this weeklong event, birders from around the globe converge on the Texas coast for fun and friendly team birding. There are opportunities to test and improve your bird identification skills in the tournament, participate in local community birding activities including those listed in the Migration Event Calendar , attend the Classic sanctioned events (shown in Dates and Deadlines ) and raise money for avian habitat conservation through Conservation Cash Grand Prize Projects . Birders of all ages and skill levels are invited to join us for one day or all week of the Classic. The Birding Classic helps bring about bird habitat conservation, increases public awareness of Texas bird diversity and promotes community nature tourism development. Through the efforts of the Birding Classic, more birds and more birders are expected to flock to Texas, so don't miss out on this year's event!

Bird watching is one of the most popular forms of nature-related recreation. According to a recent Fish and Wildlife Service study, over 30% of Texans watch wildlife as a hobby, and nearly 17% travel away from home to view wildlife. Bird watching can be as simple as enjoying birds that come to your backyard bird feeder. Or it can be as complex as learning bird songs by ear, or traveling abroad to add birds to a "life list." All you need is a good pair of eyes (though binoculars sure help!) and a field guide. The following information should also help get you started. Please send comments, suggestions, or questions to:

Gabon Birding
by Rod Cassidy
June 6, 2000
Map of Gabon Another Map of Gabon Brainforest Gabon Having just returned from a trip to Gabon I would like to report on a little known area in the south of the country. The coast of Gabon is characterized by a Maze - huge lagoons and rivers. Access is limited to flying in and boat travel and accommodations are very basic. In the 5 days I had there I had little time for extensive birding. However, I still managed to tally more than 100 species of bird, 15 species of mammal and 3 species of crocodile. I visited an area called Iguéla in the south of the country. I flew in to a place called Omboué and was met at the airport by a fisherman friend who has a camp at Iguéla. A two hour drive on an old Landrover through forest and savanna mosaic found us at his camp on the shores of a huge lagoon. Birds seen on route Included White-throated Blue-swallow, hundreds of Grey-rumped Swallows with hardly any grey on the rump, African Crakes, and Black-rumped Buttonquails. We set camp about 40KM up this river. The next 3 days were spent doing a recce for some up coming trips. A lot of time was spent just hiking some very overgrown trails and following the small rivers by pirogue as far as we could. On one trail I walked through great rain forest for about 8 Kms, heard chimpanzees and found gorilla tracks, with good birding including: Blue-breasted and Chocolate-backed Kingfisher, White-crested and White-thighed Hornbills, Spotted Honeyguide, Congo Serpent-eagle, Black-headed and Rosy Bee-eaters, Blue-headed Wood-dove, and a number of greenbulls.

Don Roberson's detailed guide to birding in each of the world's biogeographic regions.
http://montereybay.com/creagrus/world.html
The American Birding Association's [ABA] Rules Committee devised a fine scheme that divided the World into nine non-overlapping Regions for purposes of bird listing around the World. This was a concept created and promoted by the Rules Committee chairman at the time, Bob Pyle, and in the end some excellent decisions about the dividing lines were made and published (I was a member of the Committee at the time of these deliberations). Yet, for purposes of showing photos of different areas of the World, I find that I prefer to consider them from a somewhat different perspective. I, too, have nine "Realms" but they are defined a bit more along biogeographic grounds and serve better the purposes I have here. These are ( click on the link to bring up a separate page for each Realm NORTH AMERICA WESTERN PALEARCTIC ASIA NEOTROPICS ... AUSTRALASIA OCEANS OCEANIC ISLANDS ANTARCTICA
  • Without getting into detailed definitions, but to outline the areas covered, suffice it to say that I start with the ABA definitions but make these modifications:
I split Eurasia avifaunally giving separate identities to Asia and to the Western Palearctic but use the ABA's definition for distinguishing between Asia and Australasia (the line is between Sulawesi and Halmahera) I include North Africa, Europe, and the Middle East in a Western Palearctic Realm that mirrors the boundaries of the
