      INTRODUCTION
Backyard bird feeding is a convenient way to enjoy wildlife. According to a recent Census Report, over 65 million Americans, young and old, have given it a try. What has made watching birds the fastest growing hobby in the country, second only to gardening? What ever it is, watching birds, like watching fish or other animals, seems to make people feel good. How do our "hand-outs" affect the birds? Little research has been done on that question. But we do know that some birds cardinals, mockingbirds and tufted titmice have extended their winter range northward, perhaps because of an increased availability of food at feeding stations. There is no indication however that backyard bird feeding has had a negative effect on wild bird populations as a whole. Backyard bird feeding can, however, have an adverse effect on an individual bird. There may be a higher incidence of disease and birds injured by flying into windows. You can take precautions to minimize these problems.

    Birding in Cincinnati
Although it's not a prime destination for traveling birders, Cincinnati provides plenty of interesting birding opportunities. This web site is intended to help both local and visiting birders find birds in this area. But this web site is not just for birders, it is also written by birders. Although I've set up the framework for the site, much of the content has been written by others. The sightings log and the message board depend almost entirely on your input. And a number of entire pages have been contributed by others. I hope you enjoy your visit here on the web site; and I hope you enjoy exploring the Cincinnati area looking for birds. If you live in the area, you might want to consider joining the Cincinnati Bird Club Comments? Suggestions?

    Columbus Audubon Avid Birders
Avid Birders are people who are interested enough in birding to get out of bed very early and go on day-long field trips. The only requirements to join us are enthusiasm, binoculars, and a reliable alarm clock. A spotting scope is often useful, but not required. You do not have to be a member of the Columbus Audubon Society to attend these field trips. Trips involve no lengthy or arduous hiking, although we occasionally walk across loose sand or rocks. Trips normally last all day, but arrangements can be made for those who must return early. We can accommodate an unlimited number of persons on most trips; however, longer trips out of state are usually limited to a small number of participants. The longer trips fill up early, and first priority is reserved for those who participate regularly on weekend trips. Unless otherwise noted, field trip participants should meet at the southwest corner of the Worthington Mall parking lot at the designated time. Car pooling is encouraged. Worthington Mall is located on the northeast corner of High Street and Wilson Bridge Road, just south of I-270. Participants should bring a sack lunch. Remember that weather at our destinations, especially along Lake Erie, is often much colder than in Columbus, so be prepared with appropriate clothing. Most of the Avid Birders are very interested in finding unusual Ohio species. Because of the Internet and email birding resources and networks, we have excellent access to last minute information on the whereabouts of good birds. Therefore, destinations indicated on the schedule should be regarded only as likely candidates. Actual destinations may change at any time up to or after departure.
