Index Ratings View Rating Submit Rating GORP Puerto Rico PARKS Caribbean National Forest Baqo de Oro Trail #26 This is an excellent trail for first time visitors. It is short and easy to hike. Combined with the lower section of the El Yunque Trail, it provides a nice 1 mile loop which returns you to the starting point. A short level paved section will lead you to the Baqo de Oro bathing complex. Originally built as a swimming pool in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), now it is only for viewing. From there you will continue to hike on a gravel trail through giant palms, orchids and bromeliads. You will pass many stream crossings and have the opportunity to enjoy the quiet sounds of running water among the jumbled rocks, and birds whistling as you view the lushness of the vegetation. As you hike see if you can catch a glimpse of one or more of the old fish hatchery tanks. Built of stone, some have a circular shape. These tanks represent a failed attempt to breed and introduce trout, an exotic cold water species, into the tropical forest. When you reach the El Yunque Trail junction, turn to the right to return to Palo Colorado, your starting point. A left turn takes you up the El Yunque Trail (#15) to some of the highest elevations of the rain forest.

114. The Raven's Aviary - Corvidae Sounds
Sound files and description of the calls of the birds in the Corvidae family.
http://www.shades-of-night.com/aviary/sounds/sounds.html
The raucous call of the crow is familiar to everyone who has spent any time in their vicinity. It's a far cry from the melodious tunes produced by many of the songbirds, but once you get used to it, it has a charm all its own. In addition to their harsh calls and occassional jaded shrieks, most corvids have a repertoire of chirps, rattles, and other odd noises which are less frequently associated with them. Crows and ravens are also great copycats, and have been known to to imitate noises made by other birds - or dogs, cats, humans, and even alarm clocks. The following calls are those more regularly associated with the corvidae family... Raven: 159K wav file
Description: This raven (Corvus corax) call was recorded when the bird was being harassed by a pair of Phainopeplas. Visit Doug VonGausig's site ( Naturesongs.com ) for a better description of the recording.
Naturesongs.com

Raven: 43K wav file
Description: A couple quick calls by Corvus corax
Source: From European Birds - Songs and Sonograms
Australian Raven: 210K au file
Description: the very distinctive call of the Australian Raven (Corvus coronoides) - 2 or 3 strong caws, trailing off to a mournful sigh. The bird repeats this a couple times, and then seems to be joined by another doing the same.

Bird Songs of the Yucatan Peninsula

An on-line guide to some common tropical bird vocalizations with descriptive analyses Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula is home to an amazing diversity of birds, yet the vocalizations of most resident birds have not been studied in detail. By recording the songs and calls of tropical birds and presenting an analysis of their vocalizations on this website I hope to accomplish three things. First, I attempt to provide a more thorough and quantitative analysis of these songs than is covered in field guides or elsewhere in birdsong literature. Second, I present examples of some common songs from the Yucatan Peninsula as a guide for the student of ornithology. Finally, I wish to make these recordings available to others. The vocalizations of sixteen resident species are described, and spectrograms and wav files of their songs are included through the links below. Species Described (Click on a species name) Brown Jay
Caribbean Dove

Ferruginous Pygmy-owl

Great-tailed Grackle

Violaceous Trogon
