Defenders of Wildlife
1101 Fourteenth St.
Suite 1400
Washington, DC
Tel: 202-682-9400
Fax: 202-682-1331 STATUS: Once a common sight in the forests of the eastern United States, the cerulean warbler is vanishing at an alarming rate. Since 1966 its numbers have declined by 70 percent, due primarily to habitat fragmentation and destruction in both its breeding and winter ranges. In October 2000, 28 conservation organizations, including Defenders of Wildlife, petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list this species as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. To date, the Service has not taken any action. DESCRIPTION: A small, sky-blue insect eater most often seen flitting around the upper canopy of mature deciduous eastern forests. IDENTIFICATION FEATURES: As with most warblers, males and females look quite different from each other. The male is bright cerulean blue above and white below. He has wide white wing bars, a narrow black breast band and black streaks along his flanks. The female is dull turquoise above with a pale blue crown and yellowish-white below. She also has wide white wing bars but does not have a breast band or distinctive streaking. SONG: Only the male warbler sings and his vocalization is quite distinctive - rapid buzzy notes on one pitch followed by a short series of rising and accelerating notes, ending with a high buzzy trill. ZHEE ZHEE ZIZIZIZI zzzzeeet.

Bird Song Ear Training Guide
New! Just In. This is a great new CD for birds of midwestern and eastern USA. It plays the song and THEN tells you what the bird is. And it gives a mnemonic for each song. Read more details.
Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs: Eastern Region
audio CD These are sound recordings of 374 birds of eastern North America, to play on your audio cassette player or audio CD player. Most of these songs were recorded by Lang Elliott, a passionate and inspired recordist. For most species, several different sounds are given, with an average of 3-5 different sounds per bird, and about 40 seconds per bird. The sounds are in the same order as the birds in the Stokes Eastern field guide, so it's easy to follow along in the book. The CD version has the useful feature of most species' having separate track numbers, so that they can be instantly accessed. Diane's evaluation: One of the wonderful things about this collection is the accompanying 64-page booklet, which describes each bird's sounds in words. This is a great help to people who find it easy to learn by reading. The booklet also describes the contexts in which the sounds are given, such as "the song of a territorial male," or "begging calls of the young at the nest."

90. Blue Jay
Contains sounds and facts about this common North American bird.
http://birds.cornell.edu/BOW/BLUJAY/
Blue Jay
Cyanocitta cristata Cool fact: Infamous as a destroyer of eggs and nestlings, Blue Jays actually derive only a small percentage of their annual food needs from these sources. Its diet is mostly vegetarian, including especially acorns, beech nuts, and seeds. Blue Jays also eat a variety of animal foods including grasshoppers, beetles, caterpillars, and small vertebrates. Blue Jays are intelligent and adaptable, taking advantage of almost any food resource, and will readily take to back yard bird feeders. Nonmigratory populations of Blue Jays store food such as acorns in bark crevices or in the soil. Listen to a recording of a Blue Jay from the
Library of Natural Sounds: Blue Jay sounds Common, conspicuous, and noisy, Blue Jays are capable of making a wide variety of sounds. In addition to the loud and often heard jay! jay! call, a bell-like tull-ull call, a melodious whistled teekle, and a variety of chattering, harsh notes and growls may be heard. Blue Jays also produce a remarkable imitation of the scream of a Red-shouldered Hawk. When around the nest, Blue Jays become more quiet. The nest is usually situated between 8 and 20 feet up in a coniferous, or occasionally, deciduous tree. The nests of other passerines are sometimes appropriated by these jays. The female incubates most of the eggs, and she may be fed by the male while on her nest. Both parents bring food for the hatchlings. In late summer and fall, Blue Jays travel in small flocks and family groups.

Birds of Bolivia 2.0
Sjoerd Mayer
CD-ROM for Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT / 2000 / XP It took four years, but the second version of our Bolivian Birds CD-ROM is out, to general acclaim (see the reviews ) It contains 2530 sound recordings (over 19 hours, thanks to MP3 compression) of 941 bird species, all occurring in Bolivia, with accompanying texts and identifications of all background species. And the CD-ROM now has photographs: 1390 of 756 species (639 occurring in Bolivia and an additional 117 species from northern Peru and Ecuador). species list NEW (18-04-2004): to install an updated program in which the errata are "eliminated", click here
Sjoerd recording birds near Riberalta in June 1995 Sjoerd Mayer spent the years 1991 - 1995 exploring the high mountains and steamy jungles of Bolivia, a country with an incredibly rich (1370 species so far, and counting!) and little-known bird fauna. He discovered a species new to science (Bolivian Spinetail), rediscovered two species after many years (Masked Antpitta and Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant), and recorded more than a hundred hours of bird vocalizations. A computer programmer by profession, he designed and wrote all software used to produce this CD-ROM. Nick Acheson, Alfredo J. Begazo, Mark van Beirs, Peter Boesman, Mette Bohn Christiansen, Guillermo Bodrati, Robin C. Brace, Jeroen de By, Rolf de By, Guy Cox, Susan Davis, Guillermo Egli, Jon Fjeldså , Rosendo Fraga, Tom Gullick, Henk Hendriks, A. Remold, Omar Rocha O., Lawrence Rubey, Francisco Sagot, David Spelt, David Thorns, Jan Vermeulen, Adam White, Stefan Woltmann and John van der Woude contributed almost all photographs and most of the sound recordings to this project. Many thanks to everybody!
