Tropical Bird Sounds
Resplendent Quetzal
The Resplendent Quetzal page presents an analogy between the iridescence of the Quetzal's feathers and an auditory illusion at a Mayan temple, believed by some to be an attempt to capture in stone the call of the Quetzal. A recording of the Resplendent Quetzal's flight call ('perwicka') [.wav] (All of these samples are 8-bit, sorry.)
Three-Wattled Bell-bird
The Bell-bird page presents the discovery that the Bell-bird's distinctive metallic "bonk" sound appears to consist of three simultaneous tones roughly a semitone apart, perhaps created by multiple independent vocal resonators. A Bell-bird recording [.wav] A smaller sample [.wav]
Thrush
The thrush page presents some interesting slowed-down 2-part harmony thrush sounds, apparently produced by a single individual. Thrush recording [.wav] The binaural recording, " It's a Jungle in There: Sounds of the Tropical Rainforest in 3-D ," is now available in MP3 format.

Learning bird sounds
Many birds can be identified by their songs and calls. You can learn these sounds from the various CDs and tapes that are available. Some of these, such as Teach Yourself Bird Sounds (a series of 10 tapes), have a spoken commentary to help you distinguish the various songs and calls. These are particularly suitable for people with a visual impairment. The Teach Yourself Bird Sounds tapes are available from RSPB shops, price £7 each. Bird sounds from our Bolivia birding trip September/October 2000
See trip report at johnbirding.wolweb.nl
Here are 50 recordings from this trip to highlands and lowlands, with wetter and drier sites. This is a selection of what we recorded there on minidisc, and typically it contains several species that may puzzle the birder visiting these sites: often heard but not often seen. Included is a recording of a spluttering river dolphin. The sounds are in mp3 format, which greatly reduces file size, and which can be played easily now (just try by clicking on the file name). In case you cannot yet play mp3, download e.g. the free WinAmp player program at e.g. www.download.com The species are given below in the sequence of the trip. I checked this selection on Sjoerd Mayer’s CD-ROM Birds of Bolivia version 2 (see info on www.birdsongs.com ). Compared to the wealth of sounds on that CD-ROM (with an enormous photo collection as well), the selection below is just meant to appetize, but still representative of what you will hear on such a trip in that season. Sjoerd himself has helped me identify some of the species of the early part of the trip. Sjoerd Mayer himself checked this page later also, and made several corrections and found several extra species at the background. His identifications are indicated with "SjM".

Bird Sounds from the Mazar Wildlife Reserve, Ecuador
During a two week trip to the Mazar Wildlife Reserve in Ecuador in August 2002, I have recorded a number of bird sounds and made them into a little page. The Mazar Wildlife Reserve is a privately owned Bosque Protector located on the eastern side of the Andes, some four hours by car from Azogues, or five from Cuenca. It measures about 13,000 hectares of temperate montane cloud forests, paramo and at lower altitudes also cultivated lands. The altitude ranges from 2,900 to 3,700 meters. In the Birds of Ecuador the reserve is known as Hacienda La Libertad, which is the name of a little house at the bottom of the reserve. The reserve is governed by the Fundacion Cordillera Tropical which tries to achieve both conservation of the present forests and paramos, as well as provide the local communities with more sustainable use of the land by using Alpacas. It also tries to map the pre-Inca culture present in much of the reserve in the form of terraces, pottery and Inca-trails. To date, some 150 bird species have been recorded, among which the Crescent-faced Antpitta, rediscovered by Ridgely and others in 1991, Golden-plumed Parakeet, Viridian Metaltail, and Red-faced Parrots. If the sound of a bird your looking for is not in our library, we recommend you try any of the following bird audio and/or mnemonics sites.
It's interesting to note, that the best way to understand the entire repertoire of a particular bird is by comparing various audio recordings and written mnemonics. Like this page? Send it to a friend! You are here: BBC Animals Birds Want to record the song of some of your local birds? Wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson gives us his top ten hints on recording the perfect bird song. listen to a dawn chorus 1: Why record wildlife sounds? Wildlife sounds enrich our lives, whether it's birdsong in a garden, or the spectacular soundscape of a seabird colony. Capturing these sounds can be an exciting and rewarding experience. 2: Listen. Your ears are an important part of your equipment! Teach yourself to listen afresh. The radio is a good place to start. Hear the range and depth of location sounds on reports, features and documentaries and simply build up your own experiences of the differences you hear and what you like the sound of. 3: Microphones: They need good windshields when used outdoors and need to be of robust design, with a bass cut switch to reduce wind and traffic noise. Sennheiser, Sony, Audio Technica and Beyer all make good microphones and their catalogues have application guides and advice on recording techniques. Microphones can be hand-held but a lightweight tripod or clamp is much better, this prevents handling noise and leaves you free to operate the recorder and watch the action. 4: Recording machines: Mini-disc is a new audio format of high quality. The portable recorders are lightweight, easy to use and have a long battery life. Audiocassette recorders can also record good quality sound. Remember that if you have access to a video camera these can also record sound only - you don't have to record an image as well!
