is BellaOnline's Birds Host Should You Join a Bird Club? You have a bird (or more) and you enjoy your bird. A friend who also has birds has been telling you that you should join the bird club that he belongs to. Should you join it?
There may be different types of bird clubs in your area. One may specialize in parrot type birds, one in canaries, one in finches and maybe one covers all types of pet birds. The club you join may depend on the type or types of birds you own.
One reason to join the club might be the chance to meet other people in your area who have birds as pets. Some of these people may breed birds as well as have them as pets and you may be able to add more birds to your home. Some of the people may have years of experience with birds and may have answers to questions that you are having about the care of your own pet.
The club may have monthly meetings with guest speakers who may speak on a variety of topics that you may find interesting. The club may have a monthly newsletter filled with helpful information.
Sometimes clubs may buy bird toys or food in bulk to save on shipping expenses where the savings are passed on to the members.

With a single-minded purpose to study avifauna a score of keen birdwatchers gathered in a private home in Britannia Bay on 10 September 1998. A second meeting, on 9 October of that year, confirmed the need for a bird club and affiliation with any of the national bodies was thoroughly debated. The West Coast Bird Club was formally inaugurated at a special general meeting on 15 March 1999. André Huysamen, the driving force behind the Club's formation, was unanimously elected chairman and he held this office until the Club's AGM in January this year when Dave Dixon took over. Rocherpan Nature Reserve, 25km north of Velddrif on the gravel road towards Elands Bay, was the venue for the Club's first outing on October 11. There are two hides from which the seasonal vlei can be seen and which is home to thousands of waders and ducks. It provides a sanctuary to one of South Africa's most endangered species the African Black Oystercatcher and a breeding place for Cape Shovellers. At the second get-together at the Velddrif Bird Hide on Saturday 24 October, guest speaker Professor Phil Hockey of the Percy Fitzpatrick Institute at UCT elucidated on migrant birds visiting our shores and more particularly the Berg River estuary. This IBA (Important Bird Area) and proposed Ramsar site is situated on intertidal mud-flats and saltmarches and one can expect to count more than 200 species there.

. It is a bird club's duty to promote the scientific study of the ornithological features of its own local region, the behavior and interrelationships of both its common and its rare species, and especially the intensive classification of its own local habitats. It is a common mistake to assume that the layman has no ambition in his hobby. Beneath his early pursuit of the `life' bird and the rarity there already lies a sense of dignity for his efforts. How else can one explain the journals that nearly all bird students seem to have? It is. this sense of the dignity of bird study that forms the basis for contributions to ornithology by the amateur. We may dislike having to rush and arrive at his office by 9 A.m., but he enthusiastically arises an hour before dawn to wade with wet feet in a mosquito-ridden fountains of marsh. He often produces notebooks dating back 20 years.

"If you sit in one place long enough, eventually every species of bird will pass by." Set aside October 10, 2004 for the twelfth annual New Haven Bird Club, THE BIG SIT! - co-sponsored by Bird Watcher's Digest The BIG SIT! is like a Big Day, or a Bird-a-thon in that the object is to tally as many bird species as can be seen or heard within 24 hours. The difference lies in the area limitation (17 foot circle) from which you'll be allowed to observe. THIS FREE EVENT IS OPEN TO EVERY INDIVIDUAL AND CLUB IN EVERY STATE AND IN EVERY COUNTRY! Get a team together or go it alone - add to your state's (or country's) total! 3 categories:
1) Best Overall Count (Most species seen by a single circle)
2) Best State Count (Highest combined total from circles within a state - wins State "braggin' rights")
3) The Big Prize!:
