For many Americans, the promise or threat of biotechnology remains in the realm of science-fiction. As biofoods and other products developed using the tools of modern biotechnology begin entering the marketplace in large numbers, the questions about biotechnology will move out of the labs and meeting rooms into the produce aisle, giving consumers the power to make choices about biotechnology-derived foods. While actual knowledge of what biotechnology or genetic engineering is remains extremely low, consumers will need objective information and educational opportunities to help them form individual opinions about the "biotech" products available. New food and agriculture products derived using the tools of biotechnology are the result of a great deal of research and development. The expansion of biotechnology as an industry will lead to the development of new jobs which require new skills. Thus, training a skilled workforce will be important for the future of biotechnology in the food and agricultural sectors.

This publication was compiled for the Alternative Farming Systems Information Center. The search producing this bibliographic listing was constructed to be both broad and deep, covering all aspects of economics in relation to any type of alternative farming system. Nearly twenty percent of the items originally retrieved were excluded because they were not specific enough to either or both of the concepts, alternative farming systems, or economic impacts. Materials in any language were included.

Regional and international biotechnology programmes in the region Contents Previous Next The national biotechnology programmes of the developing Asian countries are being strengthened through various bilateral and multilateral programmes. The bulk of the external assistance is country-specific and is mainly directed towards the provision of infrastructure and equipment, and postgraduate training. Multilateral assistance from UNDP, FAO, the World Bank, UNIDO and the Asian Development Bank is the most important. As regards bilaterals, the overseas development cooperation wings, such as JICA (Japan), ACIAR (Australia) and USAID (United States) are quite active. The following regional/international biotechnology activities are important. FAO/UNDP Subprogramme - Asian Biotechnology and Biodiversity FAO/UNDP project "Biotechnology Development Network for Animal Production and Health" This regional project was operational from 1989 to 1993. Eight countries: China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea and Thailand, participated. The project had the following immediate objectives:
    • Establishment of a network of biotechnology centres in eight countries to share the responsibility of research, training and information exchange essential to biotechnology development in the region.

    Biotechnology
The Biotechnology Division of the Agricultural Research Council’s Vegetable and Ornamental Plant Institute is situated at Roodeplaat, near Pretoria. The Division specialises in research on vegetables, ornamental plants, indigenous and grain crops. The Biotechnology Division offers expertise in research, development, and transfer of biotechnology products and services to resource poor and commercial farmers, plant breeders and other agricultural organisations. Research projects have been identified and implemented by the Biotechnology Division with the aim of developing new cultivars better suited to South African conditions. The research group of the Biotechnology Division actively promotes collaboration with other ARC institutes, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), universities, agricultural industries and the National Department of Agriculture. There are five focus groups that share research programmes within the Biotechnology Division: Abiotic stress Drought and heat are some of the main factors limiting agricultural productivity world-wide. The aim of this programme is to improve agricultural crops through identification and evaluation of traits associated with drought and heat tolerance in higher plants. Experience on drought screening includes crops such as potato, soybean
