Alternative energy sources
The Energy Saving Trust was set up by the UK Government after the 1992 Rio Earth Summit and is one of the UK's leading organisations investigating the development of alternative energy sources. Their goal is to achieve the sustainable, efficient use of energy and to cut carbon dioxide emissions that are the key contributor to global warming. The use of alternative energy sources is one way to address this vital goal, which affects us all.
Find out more about alternative energy sources
So what are the different types of alternative energy sources available to us? Solar, water, wind, biomass and geothermal energy are just the tip of the iceberg. It is one of the Energy Saving Trust’s roles to research the most economical and efficient use of these alternative energy sources. What are the benefits of alternative energy sources? At the forefront is the reduction in carbon monoxide emissions and the benefits of these sources being renewable, therefore not sapping our rare and valuable commodity of fossil fuels.
Government policy and programs are now right behind alternative energy sources and the figure for electricity generation, along with others, is only set to rise. At the regional level, the Energy Saving Trust works with local authorities and a range of organisations (including schools and housing associations) to promote the implementation of alternative energy sources.

You will get more from this topic if you have mastered the basics of energy Printer-friendly version of complete topic Extracting energy from biomass is an ancient practice, dating back to when people first burnt wood to provide heat and light. But just because the idea is old doesn't mean there's no scope for novel technology. Scientists are continuing to find new and increasingly efficient ways to extract energy from biomass, to a point where it is now being taken seriously as a future energy option. What is biomass? Biomass One of the most appealing things about biomass energy is that it doesn't contribute to the enhanced greenhouse effect , provided that the biomass is harvested sustainably ( Box 1 ). Coal, gas, oil and other fossil fuels Where does the energy come from? The original source of the energy present in biomass is the sun. Small 'factories' in plant-leaves called chloroplasts chemical bonds of these compounds.

SEMINAR ON THE LATEST ADVANCES IN BIOMASS GASIFICATION AS ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCE Text Only
SEMINAR ON THE LATEST ADVANCES IN BIOMASS GASIFICATION AS ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCE (ROCKY HILL, CONN., May 8, 2001) – A Wednesday, June 20th seminar will present information on a clean and plentiful alternative to fossil fuel-generated energy. “Biomass Gasification: The State of the Art” will be held at the Holiday Inn in Cromwell from 9:00 to 1:30 pm.
Presented and sponsored by The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund, the seminar will feature discussions of Connecticut’s current energy mix and its future in the use of renewable energy sources. Internationally known researcher Virinder Singh will be the luncheon speaker. Dr. Singh is the research director of the Renewal Energy Policy Project in Washington, DC. Other speakers will discuss: Connecticut’s energy resources, large gasifiers; small scale gasifiers; microturbines and fuel cells and biomass.
“We felt it was important at this time for us to present the latest advances in biomass gasification,” says Subhash Chandra, Director of Investments for the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund. “This process has the potential to produce energy as clean as natural gas, but with local resources that are not subject to supply constitutions, price spikes or international controls. This is all part of The Clean Energy Fund’s charge to diversity the mix of energy sources and offer the ratepayers of Connecticut viable alternatives for their power.”
The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund invests in enterprises and other initiatives that promote and develop sustainable markets for energy from renewables and fuel cells that will benefit the ratepayers of Connecticut. The fund was created by the Connecticut General Assembly as part of legislation deregulating electric utilities.

Biomass and biomass fuel
Recent concerns about the effects of carbon dioxide from the use of fossil fuels, such as in global warming, has led to a renewed interest in the use of biomass, since it absorbs carbon dioxide as it grows. Thus when biomass is used as a source for fuel, the carbon dioxide released is only the amount it has already absorbed. Research at Reading is being done on the use of vegetable oils, vegetable oil esters and methane gas (both biogas and natural gas) in compression ignition engines. The combustion characteristics of these fuels in engines are very different from those of diesel. Exhaust gas emissions and other environmental issues are also considered. There is also interest in the use of alcohol fuel in spark ignition engines. While the production and use of alcohol fuels has been achieved on a national scale in Brazil, more work is required on small-scale farm or village level production of this fuel. There is a growing interest in the use of wood as a fuel. Cooperation is being sought on a project to find more efficient ways of manufacturing charcoal to supply both the British barbecue market and the urban domestic market in developing countries. The gasification of wood to produce a fuel gas that can be used in internal combustion engines and elsewhere, is another area in which cooperation on a project should lead to new technology being developed to meet a large potential market both in Europe and the developing world.

Cost-conscious farmers and ranchers have become increasingly aware of the impact that energy has on their bottom line. With dairy producers, for instance, the cost of electricity alone can decide whether or not they are able to stay in business. And savings on energy on any farm means more money in the farmer's pocket. These savings all start with efficiency and conservation, but today's farmers can figure into the energy equation as producers as well as consumers. For many farmers and ranchers, solar, wind, and biofuels energy can be generated and used on-farm to cut energy costs and increase energy independence. Perhaps of equal promise is that farmers can become important energy producers, both for themselves and their neighbors, as well as for the nation's future. The publications in the series look at energy conservation and renewable energy technologies and what they can mean to farm profits.
