Laboratory: Field Experiments on Succession
Succession is the pattern of changes in a plant community over time. The changes that occur at a single location are difficult to predict because they may be the result of many features of the environment that can limit plant growth. Examples of these features (called limiting factors) include the level of soil fertility (which may be too low for some species), herbivory (some plants do not tolerate being eaten very well), and seed dispersal efficiency (some plants such as ragweeds have very light seeds that easily move into new habitats, others such as oaks have poorly dispersed seeds and fruit). It is difficult to work out which of the many potential limiting factors are the most important affecting species success in an ecosystem. However, addressing this problem is important if you are trying to manage an area, for example for wildlife. In this lab we will introduce you to a field experiment that uses the scientific method and a rigorous statistical approach to investigate the limiting factors affecting secondary succession in an abandoned pasture. Important: Be sure to dress appropriately for the field. This means that it is inadvisable to wear high heels, shorts, or skirts. Wear long pants, and shoes that can get wet or muddy. Use unscented soap, and avoid perfumes, scented aftershave or you might attract insects. Do use plenty of insect repellent to deter the numerous ticks and other insects. Smoking is not allowed either in the vehicles travelling to and from the field site, or on site. Bring a hand calculator.
