Scope and Call for Papers
Pacific Conservation Biology is a journal dedicated to conservation and wildlife management in the Pacific region. Papers on any aspect of conservation research or management are welcome.
Papers describing research results should conclude with a section outlining the implications for management or management-related research. Similarly, papers about management issues should address the requirements for research.
There are three categories of manuscript:
  • short (less than 1000 words): news and correspondence items;
  • contributed papers (typically 2000 to 10000 words); and
  • forum essays (1000 to 4000 words) and reviews (less than 10000 words). Please refer to the Notes for Contributors for specific instructions on manuscript preparation.

    The Department of Biology at Portland State University is comprised of two major divisions: an Environmental Biology division and an Organismal Biology division. Information on faculty research interests and on both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in biology can be obtained from either division.
    Environmental Biology
    Faculty in the environmental biology program have research, teaching, and outreach interests that span biological diversity from molecules to ecosystems. The group of nine full-time faculty focuses its work on components of the university's biological science program at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral level. Faculty make important contributions to introductory biology courses for majors and non-majors, provide service education to pre-professional and environmental science students, and support advanced course work for majors and graduate students in the biological sciences. Course work supports two of the three tracks in the interdisciplinary major in biology. Faculty in environmemtal biology support approximately 30 graduate students in biological science and environmental science programs. Faculty also maintain collaborative research and outreach arrangements with other institutions, notably the Oregon Health Sciences University and several local agencies and institutions ranging from botanical gardens to governmental agencies.

    Careers in Biology
    What Jobs Do Biologists Have?
    Research
    Many researchers work at colleges and universities, where they also teach. Industry employs research biologists in fields such as biotechnology, drug development, and food processing. Some research biologists work for the government, where they aim to protect and restore the environment, breed better crops, fight human and animal diseases, evaluate food and drug safety, or work on space missions. Researchers attend seminars, read scientific journals, and write articles to tell others about their results. Some travel to exotic places to do their work. Researchers often need help from skilled people trained in biology. Laboratory technicians help carry out experiments; they often become experts at taking field measurements, manipulating cells, handling animals and chemicals, or using sophisticated instruments.
    Health Care
    Health care workers apply biological knowledge to keep people healthy or return sick people to health. Physicians, dentists, nurses, medical technicians, and physician's assistants all must have a solid biology background. Some health care professionals work directly with patients; others may devise public health campaigns to defeat illnesses such as tuberculosis, AIDS, cancer, and heart disease. Some work to prevent the spread of rare, deadly diseases like that caused by the now infamous Ebola virus.

    The cardiac cycle is the cycle of events that occurs as the heart contracts. There are two phases of the cardiac cycle. In the diastole phase, the heart ventricles are relaxed and the heart fills with blood. In the systole phase, the ventricles contract and pump blood to the arteries.
