Theory (A) Exercises (B) Training and projects (C) Studytime (D) Studypoints (E) Language of instruction Dutch Lecturer Patrick Van Oostveldt Semester first Department Co-lecturers Key Words molecular biology, cytology, biochemistry, cell communication, development Objectives Starting from a biochemical background understanding the basic mechanisms that govern growth and development of higher organisms. Finding the relation between chemical composition and microscopic organisation. The communication between compartements in the cel and between cells is discussed and illustrated with model systems. Special attention is given to different methods used in the research of cells and tissues. Contents In contrast to the approach found in most standard biochemical handbooks we don`t start from the chemical compounds (carbohydrates, lipids, aminoacids) but try to explain where and how the different compartments in the cell or the tissue perform specific chemical transformations. Every chapter contains a describtive part and a technological part, explaining how certain information in cell biology was obtained.

http://www.williams.edu/Biology/orienteering/o~index.html
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a sport in which orienteers use an accurate, detailed map and a compass to find points in the landscape. It can be enjoyed as a walk in the woods or as a competitive sport. A standard orienteering course consists of a start , a series of control sites that are marked by circles, connected by lines and numbered in the order they are to be visited, and a finish . The control site circles are centered around the feature that is to be found; this feature is also defined by control descriptions (sometimes called clues ). On the ground, a control flag marks the location that the orienteer must visit. To verify a visit, the orienteer uses a punch hanging next to the flag to mark his or her control card . Different punches make different patterns of holes in the paper. The route between "controls" (refers to the flag or the site) is not specified, and is entirely up to the orienteer; this element of route choice and the ability to navigate through the forest are the essence of orienteering. Most orienteering events use staggered starts to ensure that each orienteer has a chance to do his or her own navigating, but there are several other popular formats, including relays and events in which the orienteer must find as many controls as possible within a specified time.

About DSBMB
Contact Meetings DSBMB is a non-profit scientific and educational organization with over 1400 members. The goal of the Society is to create contacts between researchers and stimulate the interest for biochemistry and biotechnology in Denmark. Scientific Symposia
DSBMB members are invited to 6-8 symposia every year in Copenhagen, Odense or Aarhus covering topics at the cutting edge in molecular biology, biotechnology, functional genomics, pharmacology and systems biology. BioZoom Magazine
BioZoom is a quarterly journal published since 1997 for DSBMB members with articles and debate on research policy, biotech industry, science history, ethics, education, European science and university reform. Annual Meeting
For more than 30 years DSBMB members have gathered at the annual meeting in October to meet active scientists and form network with colleagues from universities, research institutions and industry. FEBS Membership
As member of DSBMB you are automatically member of Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) and can apply for FEBS fellowships, participate in FEBS courses and receive FEBS NewsLetter. Danish Life Sciences Forum
DSBMB and other non-profit societies have founded Danish Life Sciences Forum (DLSF) to create a coalition representing basic biomedical research scientists. DLSF advocates for increased public funding of research to allow continued progress in science.

The Department of Biology offers academic programs and research opportunities in modern biology to 1800 undergraduate majors. Our faculty research and graduate training programs span a wide array of biological disciplines, and, in addition, provide the opportunity for interactions with scientists at the USF Medical School, Moffit Cancer Center, Mote Marine Laboratory, Archbold Research Station, Keys Marine Laboratory and the College of Marine Science. The research expertise of our faculty covers a wide array of disciplines, from molecular biology to global ecology and organisms from microbes to plants and mammals. Several of our research programs investigate many aspects of tropical biology. In addition, the Department features three general, often interactive, research areas:
