CUL311 General Physics and Experiment 1
The goal of this course is to make you familiar, at the conceptual and basic problem-solving level, with the physics of mechanics, electricity, magnetism, heat, and waves, optics and modern physics. The basic philosophy of CUL311 can be summarized as follows:
The approaches used to achieve these goals involve
1) lectures to interactively discuss and demonstrate the principles,
2) laboratory experiments allowing you to actively explore these principles, and
3) interaction with instructors in discussion sections to provide one-on-one help with concepts and problem solving.

Science Sucks
11/05/00: For immediate release
Keywords: Scientific Process, Suck Quotient While researching a new breakthrough that Electromagnetic Networks is pioneering, our engineers discovered that science sucks. One engineer explored the idea by pointing out that the scientific method sucks. Another engineer corrected him with "No, science really sucks." "God damn, it sucks," clarified the first engineer. In an effort to precisely determine how much science sucks, we conducted a series of experiments, all of which sucked. It has been found that science sucks nearly a whole Lovelace; to be precise, 0.94326 Ll (+/- 2.5%), just above that of Paul Reiser. The bar graph to the right details the relative suck factor of science, as compared to other things that suck. Upon discovering the exact amount that all of these things suck, it was noted once again that the scientific process sucks. "Yeah, nearly as much as Paul Reiser does," was quickly pointed out. "Boy, I want to kick him in the head," was the rejoinder. The claim that science sucks has been found quite easy to expand upon. One of our engineers, who has studied nuclear physics extensively, highlighted the point that buckling factors suck a great deal. His coworker emphasized that computer science heavily sucks as well. "Database engine design really sucks," is a telling quote.

Learning techniques could boost interest
By Brian Giandelone, Contributing Writer
May 05, 2004
Science professors around the country are calling for changing the method of teaching introductory science classes. Robert Beicher, a physics professor at North Carolina State University, said the classes need to change to be more appealing to students. Beicher and a team of other science professors from various universities researched the current techniques of teaching introductory science classes and found many of these techniques are outdated and no longer keep students interested. Beicher and his colleagues' findings are published in the article "Scientific Teaching" in the April 23 edition of "Science." In the paper, they say the implementation of new techniques of learning, such as question-based and problem-solving discussions, can help student interest and involvement.

Title: Genetic X Files: Analyzing Mendelian Genetics
(Part One) Skill: Review and analyze results of genetic crosses.
Purpose:You will analyze and interpret genetic crosses using an interactive website studying the genetics of aliens stranded here on earth.
Dear Mendelian Genetics Expert, Today, you will be applying your knowledge about Mendelian genetics to analyze and interupt some rather strange organisms. As you will shortly see, earth received some interesting visitors on a cold night in 1947. You will be studying the 'Genetic X Files' as a review and confirmation of your knowledge pertaining to Mendelian genetics. Once you have had a chance to analyze all of the alien crosses and feel comfortable with the data, you may be asked to help on some problems still unanswered. However, you must first prove you understand several different types of crosses. Below you will find your orders. Please pay attention to them. I will check your notebook complete with notes and data when you return. I wish you luck, and say 'HI' to Mulder and Scully for me. But tell them to stay out of trouble. Sincerely
