    The cell has fascinated scientists for centuries. The microscope was invented by Dutch spectacle makers Hans and Zacharias Janssen between 1590 and 1610, and was first used seriously to examine biological material by Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694) and Robert Hooke (1635-1702), who first described cells and implicated them as central to the organization of all living things. Whether existing alone or as part of a multicellular organism, this basic unit of life is able to respond to its environment, regulate internal processes, and replicate. As we continually strive to understand life at its most fundamental level, cell biology remains at the forefront of scientific research. The objective of this five-day program is to provide high school biology teachers with an increased understanding of and appreciation for the dynamics of the cell. The workshop participants are introduced to yeast as a model system, and current techniques employed in modern cell biology research. The workshop schedule includes both classroom lectures and hands-on experiments conducted in our University of Pittsburgh laboratory containing state-of-the-art equipment. Throughout the week, emphasis is placed on concepts and experiments that can be easily adapted for use in the high school classroom.     Within the department, the main research field of the Reproduction Biology Team is the biotechnology of sexual processes in higher plants. The most up-to-date microtechniques and microscopic methods are used to examine the formation and development of male and female gametes both within the plant and under in vitro conditions. With the help of the recently elaborated egg-cell microinjection technique, morphological and physiological changes taking place within the cell can be traced more accurately by labelling cell components . The staff are involved in elaborating in vitro methods for the isolation of live gametes, zygotes and young embryos from various cereal species for micromanipulation purposes. Artificial progeny are created through the in vitro electrofusion of isolated gametes. Alien genes are introduced into the germline by microinjecting gametes and zygotes, thus contributing to the investigation of problems arising in development biology and making it possible to develop genetically modified progeny through the micromanipulation of sexual processes.
