Meeting the expectations in fundamental chemistry and biology, the major works toward imparting a comprehensive understanding of the natural environment and phenomena, and producing graduates who are able to demonstrate a future oriented resourcefulness.
The Department of Chemistry, Biology and Marine Science is a department composed of many unique characteristics that carries out educational research in areas including chemistry, biology, oceanography, research on marine biology, and the marine environment and coral reefs.
First year students, as is the case in other departments, take general education courses and introductory specialised courses. Through basic seminars and faculty of science general education courses offered by the department, students conduct research in small classes in their respective chemistry and biology laboratories.
The second year of the course is separated into these two fields and students receive education in accordance with the curriculum of the course they have chosen. Should the number of students wishing to enter a particular field (either chemistry or biology) exceed the capacity, first year results will be taken into consideration.
  • Cell and Functional Biology
This section conducts research and education of basic biology, but focuses on organisms living on islands, in mangroves and coral reef areas. The goal is to understand the general principle of life as well as the mechanisms by which diversity of life is created and maintained. Currently, research and education is conducted on developmental biology, morphology, genetics, cell biology, physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology.

Detailed information about the Ph.D. program at Stanford can be found in the Stanford Bulletin section on the Biological Sciences Department Degree Programs in pdf format and at the Academics Web Page of the Biological Sciences Department. In brief, Ph.D. students in the Molecular/Cell track are required to take Advanced Genetics, Cell Biology of Physiological Processes and Advanced Molecular Biology. In addition, students take a fourth, elective course. Examples of the elective courses taken by Plant Biology graduate students are listed below. During their time in graduate school, Ph.D. students take a course on the ethical conduct of research, attend and give an oral presentation in one of the seminar series or journal clubs in the department, and assist in the teaching of two courses. Specific first year requirements are to complete 10-week rotations in three different laboratories and to participate in the seminar Frontiers in Biology. In the second year, students write and defend an area proposal and a dissertation proposal. Plant Genetics
Offered in alternate years for graduate students and advanced undergraduates. This course covers methods of genetic analysis of particular importance in maize and Arabidopsis, two model plant species, and current understanding of key processes in plants as elucidated through genetics. Topics include molecular mapping, role of gene duplications, impact of transposons on gene structure, chromosome translocation stocks, plastid and mitochondrial genetics, nuclear - cytoplasmic interaction, self-incompatibility, generation and analysis of transgenic plants, imprinting, and transcriptional and post-transcriptional gene silencing. Case studies will include genetic analysis of meristem organization and function, epidermal specializations, leaf development, and root growth. Prerequisite: Bio core or permission of the instructors. Graduate students enroll in Biosci. 237.

    M.S. and Ph.D. DEGREE PROGRAM
The Department of Biomedical Sciences is dedicated to excellence in research, teaching and other scholarly activities, and it fosters interactions and collaborations among faculty and students in a wide range of disciplines and departments. The graduate program in Biomedical Sciences currently includes 16 postdoctoral students, 34 Ph.D. students and 79 M.S. students. Many are supported by training grants from the National Institutes of Health and the USDA Animal Biotechnology Training Program, or funds from four special endowments established to support graduate education in selected areas. Students are also supported from extramural or intramural research funds, or teaching assistantships. Some students are self-supporting, although this approach to graduate study typically is discouraged. Postdoctoral students usually spend 2 to 3 years with a mentor in the department, although most interact with three or more faculty and acquire a number of research skills. Students studying for a Ph.D. typically require 4 or 5 years after obtaining a B.S. degree.

Welcome to the Department of Biology!
The mission of the Department of Biology is to provide high quality education in biological sciences to our students, to advance the body of scientific knowledge through scholarly research, and to provide technical and educational expertise locally, nationally and internationally. This mission can only be achieved through the recruitment, retention and support of the highest quality faculty, staff and students.
The Department of Biology plays a central role in the university by providing fundamental lecture and laboratory courses introducing biological principles to students majoring in agriculture, architecture, business, engineering, geosciences, liberal arts, science and veterinary medicine. We also provide modern and comprehensive B.S. and B.A. curricula in Biology, Botany, Cell and Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Zoology for more than 1300 undergraduate majors.
Our graduate programs prepare scientists for careers in academia, industry and government and play an essential role in enhancing an understanding of the central role of biological systems in the global environment. Our faculty also provide expertise outside the university in service on scientific advisory and editorial boards, in evaluation of scientific innovations and the importance of biological systems to society, and in helping Texas and the United States meet the challenges of the future.

Now that you’ve learned all the reasons for studying biology at UCI , please visit our Admissions web site for more complete information on applying to UCI as well as to make arrangements for a campus tour ( http://www.uci.edu/admissions/ For those of you wishing to enter UCI as freshmen, we strongly encourage you to complete math through precalculus, take chemistry and physics, and complete as many honors and advanced placement courses as possible.  We have found that students who have learned excellent study skills and time management techniques often required in these types of classes may have a smoother transition to UCI. Special information for transfer applicants:   While detailed information regarding admission requirements is available at the UCI Admissions Office web site listed above, transfer students should be aware of additional requirements beyond the standard requirements.  In order to be considered for admission to UCI as a Biological Sciences major, you must have completed one year of general chemistry with a minimum of “B” grades in each course.  Although we have no biology course prerequisites, you should try to complete as much biology as possible prior to transferring to UCI.  For equivalences to UCI's biology courses as well as other required courses, please refer to ASSIST at
