September 2001 I. Detailed Description of Content and Activities
II. Activities III. Materials List for Inquiry Support Labs and Activities Biology Curriculum Support Document Introduction: This support document includes the North Carolina Standard Course of Study goals and objectives along with objective weights, a detailed content explanation, a list of helpful resources and a collection of some suggested activities. A second section of this support packet is a collection of Inquiry Support Labs and Activities. The Inquiry Support Labs and Activities and the additional "Suggested Activities" included in the support document are in no way required but serve as guides and resources for classroom teachers. The detailed content description should serve as minimum, not maximum, guidelines for all biology courses. This content description will also serve as a guide to developers of the N.C. Biology End-Of-Course Tests. A deliberate effort was made to reduce the required vocabulary in order that teachers could spend time developing conceptual understanding. Vocabulary and concepts listed as "deliberately excluded" may of course be taught at the teacher's discretion. These concepts may be more appropriate extensions and enrichment for an advanced or honors course.

Biology
In Fairfax County Public Schools, biology is the foundational science course offered to ninth graders. . We offer two different first year biology courses: Biology 1 and Biology GT/Honors. Biology is a laboratory-oriented course designed to give students a background in biological concepts as well as experience in using the methods of scientific inquiry. The use of technology is also an integral part of the course. The course includes a unit on human life education, and addresses the topics of human reproduction and human development. Parents have the option of withdrawing their children from any or all topics included in the state-mandated Family Life Education portion. Students opting out will be provided with alternative biology lessons. In addition, we have three second level biology programs, Advanced Placement (AP) Biology, International Baccalaureate (IB) Biology and Human Anatomy and Physiology . The IB program is available at Mount Vernon, Stuart, Marshall , Robinson, Edison, South Lakes, Lee and Annandale High Schools. AP Biology is available at the other high schools. Human Anatomy and Physiology is a popular second level science course and is offered at many high schools.

Throughout the year, the BBFS hosts a number of marine field biology courses. Additional, specific courses can be tailored to the needs of other colleges and high schools. For more information on any of the BBFS courses, or to inquire about getting your school or university involved, contact Dr. Samuel H. Gruber The Bimini High School Project
The Bimini High School Project, formerly funded by the Office of Naval Research from 1992 to1997, and then the Florida Department of Education from1998-2001, and presently by the Hoover Foundation and the Rosenberger Foundation, in conjuction with the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences of the University of Miami, provides Dade County high school students the opportunity to join our shark research project at the Bimini Biological Field Station in Bimini, Bahamas. The project involves several weekend trips during which students are flown, three at a time, to Bimini. The aim of this project is to provide a unique, educational experience for students who are interested in marine science and wish to participate in a "hands-on" experience in marine field studies.
