Funded by the National Science Foundation R esearch Link 2000 Bringing Research-based Experimental Systems to the Undergraduate Biology Curriculum What is Research Link 2000? Research Link 2000 is a project that has brought together biology faculty from colleges and universities to select, develop and disseminate a group of field-tested, research-based systems and instructional materials for introductory biology courses. Its major objective is to promote research activities by students and faculty on all levels of the undergraduate curriculum. What Need Does It Serve? The Council on Undergraduate Research believes that education is best served by faculty-student collaborative research combined with investigative teaching strategies. Involving undergraduates in research activities is a very valuable learning experience, whether it is part of the standard laboratory course or a special project with a professor.
Biology departments that adopt one or a few research systems as the core of a research-based curriculum will derive many benefits. Faculty will be able to collaborate on their research efforts, equipment costs will be reduced, lab courses will have a common research-based core, and students will become better prepared for advanced research studies due to their prior experience with the system.

We begin the semester with two classes concerning successful approaches for teaching biology in urban high schools. Then we begin a series of weekly hands-on activities which teach fundamental aspects of cell biology, microbiology, genetics, plant biology, and human physiology. During the first session of each week, Penn faculty teach Penn students the relevant biological background and techniques for a hands-on activity. During the second session of each week, each Penn student teaches the hands-on activity to a small group of UCHS students.

Membership in the Developmental Biology Program is currently at 200 and includes researchers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, technicians and support personal throughout Vanderbilt's campus. Program members utilize many different approaches in their attempt to answer developmental questions based on their particular field of study. This 'mixing pot' of scientific disciplines has given our members the freedom to adopt an interspecies approach to their research. Some of the fundamental questions addressed by the researchers in our program are: How is the basic body plan of an embryo established? What are the factors that drive embryonic morphogenesis? How is a heart formed? How do neurons choose synaptic partners?
