Biography resources: Finding information on the famous, infamous, and obscure
Vol. 63 No. 1 by Susan A. Schreiner and Michael A. Somers Finding biographical information on the Internet is both time-consuming and frustrating. While any particular name can retrieve a number of hits on any search engine of your choice, finding current, accurate biographies can be difficult. Fortunately, the Internet is a rich source of diverse biographical information, and the following sites will guide users to an array of information on numerous topics. This collection is by no means comprehensive (what guide on the Internet is?), but the sites were chosen for the depth of their articles or the sheer bulk of biographical materials available. GENERAL REFERENCE DESK chooses a limited number of reference tools for basic and quick research of facts. Our campus library has its own online guides for finding reference material in the paper world. Since the focus of Andy Holt Virtual Library is the Humanities and Fine Arts, we have not included reference tools designed for general information retrieval in Mathematics, Business, the Sciences, Engineering, and Agriculture, though these areas are covered in many general encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs and biography collections. Our general reference tools include some in the languages taught at UT Martin. Among the available omnia reference tools, one would have to count Refdesk.com , The Paul Meek Library's Electronic Ready Reference and Martindale's - The Reference Desk . Also, the intelligent, systematic and patient use of a search engine bank such as TBob's International Search can yield limitless general reference information. Finally, there is an electronic bridge to human resources in Ask An Expert . This page's reference categories are as follows:

  • Introduction
    b. c. 1612, Northampton, Northamptonshire?, Eng.
    d. Sept. 16, 1672, Andover, Massachusetts Bay Colony [U.S.]
one of the first poets to write English verse in the American colonies. Long considered
primarily of historical interest, she won critical acceptance in the 20th century as a
writer of enduring verse, particularly for her sequence of religious poems
"Contemplations," written for her family and not published until the mid-19th century.
Her father, Thomas Dudley, was chief steward to the Puritan Earl of Lincoln, and
she grew up in cultured circumstances. She married Simon Bradstreet, another prot?g?
of the earl's, when she was 16, and two years later she, her husband, and her parents sailed with other Puritans to settle on Massachusetts Bay. She wrote her poems while rearing eight children, functioning as a hostess, and performing other domestic duties. The Bradstreets moved frequently in the Massachusetts colony, first to Cambridge, then to Ipswich, and then to Andover, which became their permanent home. Bradstreet's brother-in-law, without her knowledge, took her

Kofi A. Annan of Ghana, the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, is the first to be elected from the ranks of UN staff. His first five-year term began on 1 January 1997 and, following his subsequent re-appointment by the UN Member States, he will begin a second five-year term on 1 January 2002. As Secretary-General, Mr. Annan has given priority to revitalizing the UN through a comprehensive programme of reform; strengthening the Organization's traditional work in the areas of development and the maintenance of international peace and security; advocating human rights, the rule of law and the universal values of equality, tolerance and human dignity; restoring public confidence in the Organization by reaching out to new partners and, in his words, by "bringing the United Nations closer to the people". The Secretary-General has also taken a leading role in mobilizing the international community in the battle against HIV/AIDS, and more recently against the global terrorist threat. Born in Kumasi, Ghana, on 8 April 1938, Mr. Annan studied at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi and completed his undergraduate work in economics at
