Biographical Dictionary Includes over 28,000 'notable men and women who have shaped our world from ancient times to the present day' (quote). The dictionary can be searched by name, year, profession and other keywords. Being a dictionary, the entries are brief, in many instances occupying only one or two lines. This is most noticeably the case for non-American based figures with a random search on some notable and not so notable figures confirming the fact. For instance, George Washington, Richard Nixon and Arnold Schwarzenegger each are given 14-16 lines, while Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair and Picasso each occupy only 3 lines. I was pleasantly surprised to see entries, though again brief, for less notable non-American figures such as (taking Irish examples) Van Morrison, Albert Reynolds, Bertie Aherne, and Dick Spring.
Currency at first seems assured, as a check on recently deceased persons confirmed. However, I couldn't help noticing entries that seem to have nothing post-1996 to say about their subject (?). Furthermore, merely listing the title and birth date of Prince Edward, son of Elizabeth II, (and nothing of his short-lived marine career, stage interest or marriage) while listing the novels of Jeffrey Archer (but little else, not even the party chairmanship) constitutes balanced entries. Again, I must emphasis, the entries are in the main very brief. However, brief does not have to mean uninformative. Information I could not extract from the site included details of the body responsible for the resource. (I will investigate same in the near future, or else it may become necessary to cease listing this site).

BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARIES
When you read a biography remember that the truth is never fit for publication. Shaw When you need to find information about a person, biographical dictionaries are a useful place to start. There are several types, ranging from the 'universal' dictionaries, such as MERRIAM WEBSTER'S BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY , which include people from all times, countries and occupations, to the very selective, such as WHO'S WHO IN BRITISH ADVERTISING In practice, when searching for biographical information you will use as many different sources as you can, limited only by your collection and your imagination. Among the most useful places to check are encyclopedias, almanacs, dictionaries, magazine articles (often found through the use of indexes to magazines) and any book available in the biographee's subject field. If you can find out from your patron a few basic clues about the person whose biography you are seeking, you will have a big advantage. Key questions to ask if you are not familiar with a name:

A biography is a written account of a person's life. Some biographical dictionaries simply list essential facts about a person, while other sources present the facts in a narrative form using complete sentences. Some sources include a list of bibliographic references which could be used for finding additional biographical information. The best place to go for biographical dictionaries is a research library. If you can go to such a library, you should do so. When you get there, look for the information, or reference, desk and ask the librarian for help. If you cannot get to a research library, you can use the Internet to locate biographical dictionaries . If you are taking a Web-based course, look for resource links on the Web pages of that course. You can also use the pull-down menu for the information resources identified by your Library. Desk Set: Ready Reference on the Web Biographical Dictionaries The Arts and Entertainment Network's Biography.com supplies brief biographies for more than 25,000 individuals. One expects it to emphasize celebrities, but many entries are drawn from Cambridge Dictionary of American Biography (1995), hence Caesar Rodney is found alongside Sid Caesar and Rodney Dangerfield. Nevertheless, the bias towards entertainers and the recently famous is pronounced: Elizabeth I is given 250 words while more than 1,000 are devoted to Elizabeth Taylor, along with a photograph, a fairly complete filmography, and hotlinks to assorted husbands and colleagues elsewhere in the database. Users can search by first or last name or browse an alphabetical list; there is no full-text search capability. Keyword and date searching are both available for the 28,000 people in Biographical Dictionary offered by S9.com, but its entries are generally only one sentence long and there is no on-site explanation of who or what S9 is or what biographical sources were consulted in its creation. Dictionary of Seventeenth-Century British Philosophers 'One doesn’t usually browse multi-volume reference works for sheer pleasure, but the Dictionary of Seventeenth-Century British Philosophers is an exception. It is, of course, a serious and scholarly work, with authoritative entries on many important figures in intellectual history. But it is also a charming and very readable work that goes far beyond the narrowly philosophical, and covers the whole range of intellectual culture of the period. In addition to entries on such philosophical figures as Bacon and Hobbes, Locke and Cudworth, it contains informative and entertaining entries on Defoe and Browne, Hooker and Overton, Sydenham and Wren, and many, many others. All in all, the book is an absolute treasure.' Daniel Garber, co-editor of

Coverage : Includes not only the best-known musicians of the period, but also minor figures with little or no prior biographical recognition. Limited to the period 1485-1714 because information prior to this time is sketchy, and music ceased to play an important role in Court life after the death of Queen Anne in 1714. Organization Pros : Useful as a comprehensive guide to court musicians of the period. Relatively more attention is given to minor figures and those new to a dictionary entry.

More importantly, because encyclopedias often cover the major issues surrounding the subect, they can help you narrow your research from a broad “who, what, where, when” topic to a “how or why” question. In addition many encyclopedia articles include short bibliographies that will lead you to the major works on the topic. this is just a selection of some history-related encyclopedias, for others please search the UW Libraries Catalog or contact a reference librarian.
