Biographical Sources There are many sources of information about people in addition to the dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, magazine and newspaper indexes, and other general reference books you have already used. You can sometimes find book-length biographies by looking up that person as a SUBJECT in the online catalog. There are also many biographical dictionaries whose articles vary in length from a brief sentence or two to several pages. Examples of GENERAL biographical sources are:
Biography Index
Current Biography Yearbook
Webster's Biographical Dictionary
Contemporary Newsmakers
Newsmakers
Other biographical sources cover famous people of a particular country. These may include only living people. (There are sources for information about people who are no longer living, as well as for fictional characters, biblical characters, etc.) There are volumes of "who's who" for many countries and regions. Examples of NATIONAL biographical dictionaries are:
Dictionary of American Biography
Dictionary of National Biography (British)
Who's Who in America
Another way of classifying information about people is by occupation. There is a "who's who" or a biographical source for almost any field of specialization you can think of, from allergists to zoologists.

A look at Rabbinic biographical dictionaries published since 1950
    Avraham Greenbaum
    Hebrew University of Jerusalem,
    Jerusalem, Israel
    Abstract
There were some early attempts to compile rabbinic biographical dictionaries, the most serious of which was a dictionary of living rabbis with addresses and brief biographies (19212). After the Holocaust, and continuing until today, a number of such works were published. Our list is representative and tries to cover different types. Some of these works reach back into the Middle Ages, and in one multivolume project even to the "Creation of the World". But the most useful are the ones dealing with the rabbis of a defined geographic area. While most writers are rabbis themselves, those with bibliographic training tone down the hagiographic element and concentrate on factual bio-bibliographic information.
