How Elijah Muhammad Won
by Daniel Pipes
Commentary
June 2000
In the early 1930's, when the Nation of Islam had just come into existence, its founder made the bold prediction that, one day, Islam would replace Christianity as the primary faith of black Americans. At the time, this assertion must have sounded incredible, if not slightly mad; not only was the Islamic faith broadly despised in the United States, but African-Americans who were Muslim numbered at that time only in the dozens. By 1959, however, a perverse endorsement of this same prediction would issue from, of all people, a top leader of the Ku Klux Klan. In a letter to the New York City police commissioner, that white supremacist wrote: "If we fail to stop the Muslims now, the sixteen million niggers of America will soon be Muslims, and you will never be able to stop them."
Today, that 1930's prediction no longer seems so outlandish-indeed, it has already been partially borne out. About one million African-Americans now identify themselves as Muslims, and a visit to the black sections of any fair-sized American town quickly confirms the presence not only of an Islamic infrastructure-mosques, schools, halal butchers, stores carrying Islamic clothing-but of an active and ambitious drive to propagate Islam. So vital is this movement that the director of a Christian effort to stem its headway has made a memorable prediction of his own: "If the conversion rate continues unchanged, Islam could become the dominant religion in black urban areas by the year 2020."

Jessye Norman is "one of those once-in-a-generation singers who is not simply following in the footsteps of others, but is staking out her own niche in the history of singing." This rich history continues to be made as she brings her sumptuous sound, her joy of singing and spontaneous passion to recital performances, operatic portrayals and appearances with symphony orchestras and chamber music collaborators to audiences around the world. The sheer size, power, and luster of her voice share equal acclaim with that of her thoughtful music-making, innovative programming of the classics, and fervent advocacy of contemporary music. In 2003, Miss Norman's spring performances included recitals at Royal Festival Hall, London and Palais des Beaus-Arts, Brussels. Future performances include song recitals in Paris, Vienna and Cleveland among other cities, with orchestral performances including Washington, D.C. for the season opening of the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, a summer concert at the famed Herodus Atticus Amphitheater in Athens. In Moscow she will sing the opening and closing concerts in the International Music Festival "Vladimir Spivakov invites....." Miss Norman will reprise her acclaimed operatic portrayals in the unique double-bill of Schoenberg's Erwartung and Poulenc's La Voix Humaine, first presented at the Chatelet Theater in Paris in 2002, at the Sadler's Wells Theater in London.

MIDDLE EAST INSIGHT EDITED BY HVF WINSTONE Contents Iraq/Saddam Husain - background to persistent Iraq claims to the ownership of Kuwait Syria/Asad - a brief summary of Syria's centuries of outsider domination, its Baathist inconsistencies, and its current optimism Guide to the paranoia of British governments faced with the actual prospect of a freedom of information bill footnote to the pursuit of Great Grandma Melita Norwood by an ex-minister and an academic bloodhound Notes from the official archives Iraq Saddam Husain Background to the Gulf War and the Iraq-Kuwait frontier question Iraq's past is for me a subject of intimate personal concern. We all share in a concern for its present. It is a name that defines one of the earliest city states of the 4th millennium BC, Uruk in its ancient form, birthplace of the written word. It is a place that embraces Sumer and Accad of the Bible, Babylon and Assyria, Gilgamesh the divine king of legend, and the great Ark of the Deluge, Ziusudra of long life, Abraham the father figure of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. A subject that reflects in its clay inscribed legends the formative stirrings of civilisation, the conflicts and achievements of the world's most ancient communities, born of mighty rivers, rich pastures, arid deserts, primordial cities; a myriad towers of Babel sending bellicose messages to angry, impenitent, and proud people. And most importantly, it is a matter of professional pride, since four of my biographical subjects were key figures in the country's lurch to modern statehood. Present day disputes owe as much to them as to Iraq's fiery and at times homicidal politicians.
