There have been many interpretations of his search for anonymity: his feeling that he had betrayed Arab hopes for independence or, conversely, the conviction that he had done everything possible for his Arab friends and could do no more; an almost pathological aversion to publicity; or emotional disturbances produced by his war experiences. When Lawrence's identity was discovered (1923), he went into the tank corps; in 1925 he rejoined the air force. He legally adopted (1927) the name T. E. Shaw. Muhammad Naguib became the nominal head of the government, but Nasser held power through his control of the Revolutionary Command Committee. In 1954, following an attempt on Nasser's life, he arrested Naguib and became premier of Egypt. In 1956 he was, unopposed, elected president of the republic of Egypt. His nationalization of the Suez Canal precipitated (1956) a short-lived, abortive invasion by Great Britain, France, and Israel (see Arab-Israeli Wars Elat . He resigned from office following Egypt's disastrous defeat, but massive demonstrations of support forced his return. During his period of rule, Nasser instituted a program of land reform and economic and social development known as Arab socialism; the completion (1970) of the Aswan Dam (see under Aswan ) was the crowning achievement of his regime. More than for his material accomplishments, however, Nasser achieved fame for leading the reestablishment of Arab national pride, seriously wounded by many decades of Western domination. In foreign affairs, he originally assumed a neutralist position, seeking support from both the East and the West to bolster his position in the Middle East. After his nation's military defeat in 1967, however, Nasser became increasingly dependent on the Soviet Union for military and economic aid. A pan-Arabist and advocate of Third-World unity, Nasser was one of the most important Arab leaders of the 20th cent.

Peter Lloyd and Wissam Boustany WISSAM BOUSTANY is one of only a few flutists to have launched a successful career as an international soloist, Wissam Boustany is a performer who inspires audiences with his energetic and communicative music-making. His flute has taken him on numerous tours to Europe, the Middle-East, Far East, USA and Latin America, where he continues to present many concerts, master-classes and workshops. His experience of the war in Lebanon greatly influenced his outlook on Life and Music, and he seeks to promote the ideal of Peace wherever his flute takes him. He has started "TOWARDS HUMANITY", a multi-decade initiative using music as a catalyst to help heal the violence in many parts of the world, which was inaugurated at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in February 1995. TOWARDS HUMANITY works closely with charities and institutions in areas suffering from the tragedy of war, exposing their cultures and creativity rather than the more shameful qualities of mankind. Wissam Boustany's communicative, energetic and sincere music making have inspired many audiences and musicians around the world.

    Company History
Arabesque Dance Company has emerged as Canada's leading Middle Eastern dance ensemble, promoting an art form that is often misunderstood, and yet, has persevered through two thousand years of persecution. The company has performed across Canada, the United States and the Middle East, often performing for royalty and heads of state, winning over audiences and gaining critical acclaim throughout its travels. Originally called Rakisaat Arabesque, the company staged its first performance at the Robert Gill Theatre in Toronto, in November of 1988, showcasing talent emerging from Yasmina Ramzy's dance school, Arabesque Academy. Staging Middle Eastern dance, choreographed for large groups, in a theatre setting had never before been done in Toronto. Heading the company of some 21 dancers and seven musicians is Artistic Director Yasmina Ramzy, widely regarded as a highly innovative choreographer who constantly strives to present original works. A characteristic of Arabesque Dance Company is the positioning on-stage of the musicians who play such ancient instruments as the 78-string qanoon (harp), the oude (lute), as well as rababa (one-stringed violin), and dumbek (Middle Eastern drum). Leading them is Musical Director Dr. George Sawa, who heads the Centre for Studies in Middle Eastern Music, also based in Toronto.
