Excellent story Much more than simply a book about photojournalists, The Bang Bang Club tells a haunting tale about several young men growing up in a rapidly changing and often hostile world. The friendships that form and are later ripped apart by bullets and suicide comprise the bulk of this well-told history. That South Africa's most important history is taking place as a background only mkaes it that much more of an interesting and enjoyable read. Yes, there is some violence, but that violence defines the world these photographers live and work in. Excellent Read This is a disturbing book. After the first three chapters I put it down and only picked it up again two months later. Perhaps I was just emotionally at low ebb the first time, but the brutal honesty of the descriptions in those first chapters got to me. Even though I am a South African and lived through that eventful period, I was unprepared for the honesty of the authors. At the second attempt I finished the book and am glad that I did as it is really well worth the read. I can strongly recommend both these books. It is a must-read for anyone interested in photojournalism and for people interested in the political transition period of SA. People who enjoy biographies will also appreciate the book.

    Mali and Songhai
Mali is named after the empire of Mali, which was located in parts of modern-day Mali, Guinea, Mauritania, and Senegal. The empire was founded by the sultan Sundiata in the 13th century. Its most famous ruler, Mansa Musa, reigned from 1307 or 1312 to about 1332. He was so powerful and wealthy that when he travelled to Mecca, he took more than 60,000 attendants with him. He also brought enormous amounts of gold with him, and gave so much of it away that the price of gold fell in Egypt. During Mansa Musa's reign, Mali conquered the large neighboring kingdom of Songhai. But the empire began to fall apart after Mansa Musa's death, and eventually Songhai regained its independence. Under the feared ruler Sunni Ali, who ascended the throne around 1464, Songhai itself started to expand into a great empire. His son and successor, Sunni Baru, was overthrown by a rebel leader, Muhammad I Askia, who made Songhai even larger and mightier. The Askia dynasty reigned until the late 16th century, when the Songhai empire was broken up by invaders from Morocco After the fall of Songhai, the area that is now Mali was divided into warring kingdoms. In the late 19th century it became part of French Africa. It gained its independence in 1960.

    My favourite royal in history:
    Eleanor of Aquitaine (~1122-1204)
Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine was an intelligent and emancipated woman living in the dark middle ages. Although it is a conventional rule that all ladies of high rank should be described as beautiful, all sources agree that Eleanor of Aquitaine really was beautiful. In addition, she was the richest heiress of France and became successively Queen of France and England.
her daughter Aenor married to his eldest son William X (1099-1137) in 1121. They had two daughters, Eleanor and Petronilla, and a son, William Aigret. Eleanor resembled both William IX and Dangereuse; she possessed the same intelligence, gaiety, restlessness and will power. The court of William IX was the centre of western European culture: the ducal family was entertained by jongleurs, storytellers and troubadours. Unlike most of her contemporaries, male and especially female, Eleanor was carefully educated and she was an excellent student. Eleanor's happy childhood ended with the subsequent deaths of her mother, her little brother and - in 1137 - her father.
The orphaned Eleanor was the richest heiress in France thus a marriage was arranged for her to its King, Louis VII (1121-1180). Louis had been brought up for an office in the church, but he had become heir to the French throne after the death of his elder brother. He was a weak, dull, grave and pious man and he and the lively Eleanor were ill matched. Louis never understood his young wife, but he appears to have adored her with a passionate admiration. It wasn't until 1145 that a daughter, Marie, was born. Meanwhile, Eleanor was eager to govern her own duchy, since she knew the troublesome Aquitainians better than anyone. However, Louis' councillor, the Abbot Sugar, resented female influence in governmental matters.

He condemned the use of violence by opponents of apartheid, seeking instead a peaceful, negotiated reconciliation between the black and white communities. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1984. (2 words - include space in puzzle)

    Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth, a nationally known speaker on human rights for slaves and women, was born Isabella Baumfree, a slave in Hurley, New York, and spoke only Dutch during her childhood. Sold and resold, denied her choice in husband, and treated cruelly by her masters, Truth ran away in 1826, leaving all but one of her children behind. After her freedom was bought for $25, she moved to New York City in 1829 and became a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. In 1853, she helped form a utopian community called "The Kingdom," at Sing Sing, New York, which was soon disbanded following the death and possible murder of its leader. Truth was implicated in the scandal but courageously fought the falsehoods aimed at her. After the death of her son, she took the name Sojourner Truth to signify her new role as traveler telling the truth about slavery. She set out on June 1, 1843, walking for miles in a northeasterly direction with 25 cents in her pocket, and rested only when she found lodging offered by either rich or poor. First she attended religious meetings, then began to hold meetings herself that would bring audience members to tears. As she logged mile after mile, her fame grew and her reputation preceded her. Truth's popularity was enhanced by her biography written by the abolitionist Olive Gilbert, with a preface written by William Lloyd Garrison. In 1864, she was invited to the White House, where President Abraham Lincoln personally received her. Later she served as a counselor for the National Freedman's Relief Association, retiring in 1875 to Battle Creek, Michigan.

By the spring of 1832, when she emigrated with her husband and daughter, she had published several children's books and had begun to establish her reputation as a poet and a writer of stories and local-colour sketches. http://www.mandysroyalty.org/CrownJewels.html
The Crown Jewels are some of the most prominent symbols of monarchy. They have been used by monarchs of the land since 1660 or earlier. The Crown Jewels are part of the national heritage of England and held by The Queen as Sovereign.
St Edward's Crown was refurbished for Charles II's coronation. The gold may have come from Edward the Confessor's original crown, for whom it was named. It is also used to crown the Sovereign during the coronation, and weighs about 5 pounds. Has anyone ever tried to steal it? Well, the most famous attempt was made by Colonel Blood in 1671, who was caught red-handed at the East Gate of the Tower of London with the crown, sceptre and orb. The Imperial State crown can be seen on the Sovereign at the opening of Parliament. This is also the crown that is usually seen on the newly anointed Monarch's head out on the balcony to greet his/her subjects. This crown weighs in at just under 3 lbs, and it was originally made for Queen Victoria's coronation. It is part of a "set", if you will, because it contains the Second Star of Africa, also part of the Cullinan Diamond in the Sceptre. This is the Queen Mother's crown. She wore it at her coronation alongside her husband, George VI, and when her daughter was crowned Elizabeth II in 1953, she wore it without the arches.

History 102 - Western Civilization Since 1648 This survey of Western Civilization's history in the "modern" periodthat is, since the mid-seventeenth centuryreviews its various dimensions over that 350 year span. The course has a clear political and economic emphasis, but it also reflects something of a "great man/woman" approach to history, an admittedly "old-fashioned" perspective. Social, diplomatic, and intellectual themes are not ignored, but do receive slightly less attention. Mechanically, the class involves two hour examinations plus a final; it is also distinguished by a series of daily quizzes designed to help the student "keep up" with things. History 320 - History of Horse Racing

their structure and organization; and the historical development of the industry and sport. Racing buffs and pure horse lovers are welcome, but the course will be an "honest" one, focusing on the internal history of the sport and on its place within society at large.
