NEWS RELEASE (March 23, 1999)
The Federal Minister of Environment, Christine Stewart, announced yesterday that she would be restoring voting rights regarding species risk to the independent COSEWIC scientists. Read the Globe and Mail's press release
NEWS RELEASE (February 24, 1999)
Identifying and listing of species at risk is the foundation of endangered species protection. 640 Canadian scientists have come together to urge the federal government to pass strong endangered species legislation. Such legislation must protect key habitat to ensure the future survival of the over 307 species that are endangered or at risk and that currently receive little to no protection under Canadian law. Read the full letter en Francais ) urging legislation signed by Canadian scientists and the press release en Francais Front page news in the Globe and Mail
Introduction
With nearly 6 billion people inhabiting this planet and taxing its resources, the Earth is facing an extinction crisis as the habitats of more and more species become marginalized and degraded. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of biological species are disappearing annually, and the rates of loss are accelerating. A substantial fraction of the Earth's biota is likely to be lost over the next century, a loss that cannot be reversed. There is an urgent need for action to protect Biodiversity. The Centre for Biodiversity Research at the University of British Columbia is committed to

Biodiversity Loss : Economic and Ecological Issues
by Charles Perrings (Editor), Karl-Goran Maler (Editor), Carl Folke (Editor). The book reports the findings of a research program that brought together economists and ecologists to consider the causes and consequences of biodiversity loss. It shows that while the immediate causes of biodiversity loss lie in habitat destruction and harvesting, the underlying causes are incentives which encourage resource users to ignore the effects of their actions. These effects include both loss of genetic material, and the collapse of ecosystem resilience. The 'solutions' are argued to lie in the reform of incentives. Click here to learn more about this book

    118. Foundation For Deep Ecology >> Biodiversity & Wildness Program
The Foundation for Deep ecology has supported efforts to end commercial exploitationof the American West, we are devoting much of our biodiversity grant money
    http://www.deepecology.org/bandw.html
Directory Ecological Agriculture Grant Guidelines "When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe." John Muir Wildness, that ideal state in which the processes of Nature function fully and unfettered, must be, in our minds and on the land, a condition ever present, ever vibrant, ever cared for. Evolution in its four billion years of unfolding has been entirely a process and product of wildness. Through wildness we come to understand the marvelous complexity, mystery, diversity, beauty, and stability of the full world in which we live. To that end, to restore the evolutionary process, our foundation places its highest priority on saving wild Nature. "The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness." John Muir The surest way to preserve wildness is to protect wilderness. Though the traditional North American models of parks and wilderness areas may not work equally well in all parts of the world, the growing discipline of conservation biology has clearly shown that only large wild areas free of roads and other industrial intrusions wilderness will sustain the full range of biological diversity, the full spectrum of wildness. FDE supports efforts to preserve and restore wilderness throughout the Americas, with the aim of returning these lands to a condition dominated by wildness.
