University of Connecticut
Center for Conservation and Biodiversity
T he Center for Conservation and Biodiversity was established in 1993 by the Board of Trustees of the University of Connecticut as a cooperative effort between the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History, and the Geological and Natural History Survey of the Connecticut State Department of Environmental Protection. Its mission is to protect the diversity of life through education, training, and research in ecology, evolutionary biology, and systematics - disciplines that are the foundation of sound conservation practice. A primary goal of the Center is to promote research and training in the conservation of biodiversity on the local, national and international scene. Basic scientific research is fostered along with applications to solving sustainable conservation issues. The Center provides financial support for graduate and undergraduate training and research in the fields of conservation, ecology, evolution and systematics. The Center is working with several private foundations and corporations to establish research fellowships for students, to fund an annual research award competition for graduate students, and to provide student travel to conduct research and attend professional meetings. T he Center sponsors a Colloquium in Conservation and Biodiversity that brings distinguished scholars to campus each year. The Edwin Way Teale Nature and Environment Colloquium is highly intradisciplinary in scope inviting economists, geographers, land managers, philosophers, nature writers, sociologists, policymakers, biologists, and, of course, environmental scientists. Lectures are attended by students, faculty, conservation agencies, and lay people.

This information platform is a national contribution to the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) . The NL CHM portal aims to offer information on the convention and its implementation in the Netherlands. It also provides easy access to knowledge about status and trends of the biodiversity in this country and brings you into contact with the people and organisations involved. Several pages of this NL CHM web site are still under construction. The site is being updated regularly. For CBD National reports from The Netherlands see our page National reports and other documents . A summary of the last formal National Report to the Secretariat of the CBD is given in the new brochure "Biodiversity and the Netherlands" Recently the english version of the new International Policy Programme on Biodiversity (BBI) of the Netherlands has been published. It is now available on this CHM web site.

Shrubs constitute its main source of food. Herds of these wild camels move widely, their distribution being linked to water. The animals tend to concentrate in and around mountains, because most springs are there and snow on the slopes may provide the only moisture in winter. Concentrations of up to 100 camels occur near the mountains, but most herds contain 2 - 15 members. The small average herd size in the past 100 years reflects not just the aridity of the environment but also heavy hunting pressure. The range of the wild Bactrian camel in historic times extended from the great bend of the Yellow River at 110 deg E westward across the deserts of southern Mongolia and northwestern China to central Kazakhstan . It was already heavily hunted for its meat and hide in the 1800's, and by the 1850's it persisted only in remote areas of the Gobi and Taklimakan Deserts in

Introduction
Review of The Biodiversity Conservation Status Of Nepal Recommendations ... Assessment Of Investment Opportunities
Summary T he report "Opportunities for Biodiversity Investment in Nepal" is part of BPP's deliveries and represents a profile of future biodiversity conservation activities and brief notes on various organizations involved in nature conservation and development in Nepal. Different organizations selected for the assessment represented both public and private institutions. A questionnaire on short and medium term investment opportunities were filled out by the institutions. Altogether 97 proposals were received from 30 organizations. The applications received are wide ranging in terms of nature and include: Strengthening of Institutions, Establishment of Protected Areas, Conservation Awareness and Training Programmes, Biodiversity Research, and Community Development Programmes. The total budget proposed for these projects is about US $38 million covering a time span of five years. Physiographically, the 97 projects are scheduled to cover either the entire country or parts of it. Twenty-four proposed projects cover the Terai only; seven are confined to the Midhills, 14 to the Highlands, 17 to the Kathmandu Valley, four for the Terai and the Midhills, and five to the Terai and the Highlands.

http://www.opwall.com/2004 research theme 4.htm
RESEARCH THEME 4: SEAGRASS AND REEF FLAT BIODIVERSITY, ECOLOGY AND EXPLOITATION Back to themed research programme Back to Wakatobi National Park index 4.1 Seagrass and reef flat monitoring programme The total fish and large invertebrates gathered by local communities from the reef flat and sea grass areas of the Kaledupa Stakeholder Area appears to be much greater than that from the reef walls. Yet most marine research in the Wakatobi National Park has so far concentrated on the reef walls. In 2004 an annual seagrass and reef flat monitoring programme utilising general volunteers will be launched to assess the standing crop of exploited fish and large invertebrates utilising these habitats and their use as fish nurseries. 4.2 Ecology of seagrass and reef flat organisms Gaining an understanding of the ecology of major components of the fauna of these ecosystems is an important step in obtaining the data needed to effectively manage this habitat. This research activity consists of a series of dissertation studies covering topics such as thermal and saline tolerance of rock pool fish species, the role of coral bombies in affecting distribution of organisms, diurnal use of the intertidal areas by fish and shrimps etc. Many of the experimental designs utilise the No Take area of reef flat as a comparative site to other exploited areas of reef flat.
